Title: A Song For You

Does anyone here think that ASFY could ever be a single ? I dont know, there is just something about E singing that song that moves me .... usually to tears. And I am not really sure why. But it is so powerful.

Think there is a chance this could be a single?

I think that it would be one of those cult hits that just takes off and hangs on the charts for ages. It is so timeless.

Kind of like Alicia Keys' hit "Fallen"...just a timeless melody that was almost haunting.

I am wondering if it is just me that thinks it could really be a big radio hit.

Doxie, I love that song. Those of us that have watched Elliott from the beginning will always associate that song with Elliott. It was his audition song. I'm not sure that people not familiar with AI or Elliott will get the same emotional spark that we have but Elliott's rendition is dynamite, none the less.

I love it, too. And the first few listens after I got my CD brought me to tears as well. Both the acoustic version and the full band version could be slowed down a little. When you compare it to Donnie's, it just sounds like he is being rushed when he sings it - reminds me of idol when they had to squeeze as much song as possible into 1:30. Just my opinion. Will always love Elliott singing this!

Edited to add: You KNOW when he does concerts, this will always be his closing or encore song!!!

I don't think this recording would do very well as a single. The people who love it recognize the mastery and truly love it - but like MMFL - it doesn't play to everyone that way. Maybe someday when he does his Donny Hathaway tribute CD he will record it again and it wll find an audience.

This is why I asked because I was not sure if only the true E Fan would like it that much. I know I am biased but I can listen to it over and over...wondered if it was just ME associating that as E's anthem song, or ... if others who wree not as familiar with E would love it as much.

I don't know, I still kind of think it would do very well. The full band version.

Personally I didn't think it was rushed. I liked it at the tempo/speed he is doing it in. But then again I am not familiar with the Donny H version all that much so it is probably sounding too fast for you since you are familiar wtih the original.

I'm a big fan of E's and his version of ASFY, and I can tell you that despite my being a fan I don't think this song will do well as a single. Firstly, it's been singled to death (i.e. Alicia Keys, Cristina Aguilera, et al). Secondly, he needs to continue to tap into the radio-listening public, and ASFY--as magnificently as he dit it--is not an ear-grabbing tune. Our ADHD-riddled society will not sit there and appreciate Elliott's vocal acrobatics and other nuances of the song as much as his loyal fans would. Elliott needs to release singles that not only grab the casual listeners' attention, but will also produce visually interesting videos. ASFY, at this point, will do neither. I agree with lindagt that, when Elliott does make his Donny Hathaway tribute CD years from now, then and only then should he release it as a single because not only would the song be relevant to the album, Elliott will have already established himself as a veteran artist to whom casual listeners will have no choice but to stop and listen.

I think this is one of those tracks that we just get to enjoy listening to on the cd, and live in concert. I have to be very careful not to listen to this track when I'm driving. It's an accident waiting to happen. :bawl:

Are you saying that Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys released ASFY as singles?

HMM I had no idea!

I am sure you guys are probably right and it is just a cherished song for the true E Fan who has been following him since that first AI audition.

And for me, I always think of him singing it at the Braves Game - which was my first E encounter (or that day rather since I had seen him earlier in the day as well at the James Center).

that day was so DARN FUN!!!!

Dox.... I hear you here. I really do. ASFY will always always be the song for me that was Elliott's defining moment forever on AI. It was such an emotional night the night he sang it. It was impeccable and I was in tears, in awe more than any other song he sang last year. I even turned off my tv at one point and played the song through my surround sound stereo and listened to it LOUD and it was just like I was there at AI. I could close my eyes and feel like I was in the audience.

I think this song will one day be a single, I truly do. But just like E said that he had waited a long time to bring it to the stage and sing it for everyone. I think there will be the "right" time for this single as well. I don't know when that is. But it will come I truly believe.

I could listen to this song over and over again too. It will always make me smile and remember everything good about E. It makes me think of from where he's come from to where he is today. It is like a personal note to each of us, that love him so and this song. I think you know what I mean when I say that.

I love all of his music, but this song will always have a special place in my heart.

Carolina - I am sure E makes everyone of us feel like he is singing that song right to us personally when he says "we're alone now...and I'm singing this song to you"...:music:

I also have a huge soft spot for his rendition of "Home". Oooh that one breaks me down too.
