Title: Find A Way
Description: I can't be the only one

san_che - March 26, 2007 01:02 AM (GMT)
Please tell me I'm not the only person who loves "Find a Way".

The reviewers (even the ones who give the album good reviews) never seem to like FAW. They usually call it a misstep or criticize the lyrics as stale. But it's actually one of my favorites. I'm constantly putting it on repeat. I just love the instrumentation (especially the piano because I'm a piano person) and I love that the music is upbeat, and E, of course, sings his heart out!

In fact, don't stone me, but I actually like this better than "You Are the One" which seems to be very popular.

I love that song! It's one of my favorites!

oregonAIfan - March 26, 2007 01:10 AM (GMT)
The more I listen to Find A Way the more I like it. I really like the scatting on it too, Elliott scats very well. :rocker:

san_che - March 26, 2007 01:11 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah! I love Train Wreck too! I think I've worn that one out on my CD.

Rutti - March 26, 2007 01:13 AM (GMT)
Love Find A Way! The more I listen to it, the more I love it. And one of the DJs on Lite 98 says it's his favorite and he plays it often.

sandyb - March 26, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
It's one of my favorites also.

wowhesgood - March 26, 2007 01:29 AM (GMT)
Nope you're not alone. I think this is one of the very unique qualities about Elliott's cd is that almost every one of the songs on the cd are somebodies favorite. Usually everyone picks the same few as their favorite. I don't know that I've ever heard a cd like this one where every song is liked and everyone seems to have different favorites, which encompass every song on the cd.

marmar1 - March 26, 2007 01:33 AM (GMT)
My 2 favorite songs (although I love them all!) are Find
A Way and Free.

SingItE - March 26, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
No, I love it too. It's really hard to pick a fav on this CD though. I love so much of it for different reasons.

My sister just got the disc today and that's the ONLY song she commented on. She loved it too, she was pleasantly surprised that he did a song like that and said that it's meaningful. Her husband spent alot of time away in Iraq while she was alone in Germany with their unexpected twins and their son. I think it pushed her buttons.

I love the vocals on Find A Way. They are so pure. I love the passion in Elliott's voice. I love the tune, and I love the lyrics.
I don't have a favorite, because I just don't have a favorite Elliott song..anymore than I had a favorite Beatle song. I like them all, for different reasons.

Hey I am with ya there Par. I love them all and for different reasons.

However I think I do have to say ASFY is my fave for one very big reason tho. It just is my Elliott anthem! :rocker:

parsimmon - March 26, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
ASFY will always be associated with Elliott..who can forget how he looked that night he sang it along with his exquisite vocals. He just put so much soul into the song and into his expression. If you didn't cry, you thought about it.
Wait For You...is my Elliott song. I can't associate it with anyone else...and it's the one I'm hearing on the television. "I never felt nothing in the world like this before"...so Elliott. No one else can sing like he can. And IT IS ELLIOTT's song. Everyone else will be doing a "cover" of Elliott's "Wait For You".

movin2thabeet - March 26, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
I love the lyrics, music and of course, E's vocals on Find a Way. I'm not a big fan of the musical arrangement. I agree with a number of reviews that the musical production on the CD is the weakest part of the CD. It's a great start but I really hope he hooks up with some better producers next time around. I'd like to hear the musical voice of these songs more closely match the artistry of E's voice.

The other thing about this particular song is that I think it's the one that E cares most about. I don't think it's just a song with catchy lyrics - there's a passionate message here.

i LOVE FAW.....and the scatting is great.....is there no end to this man's talent????

nymphadora - March 26, 2007 05:29 AM (GMT)
You're not the only one who loves FAW, san che. I love it, too! YATO used to be my favorite, but now it's definitely FAW. :)

chattycb - March 26, 2007 01:12 PM (GMT)
I also loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Find a Way. I know many of the reviews have criticized it for its lyrics, but I just love it, even more so than You Are the One or Wait For You. I'm not that knowledgeable about music to be critiquing it, but i just know what I like. The very beginning is so very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder to me, that it's scary. I absolutely adore Stevie so perhaps that's why it's right up there as one of my favs. Also love Trainwreck. By gosh, I love the whole darn cd.
He's a genius, our Elliott is.

sange - March 26, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)
I love FAW too!!!!But than again,I love them ALL!I do have two favorites,
Trainwreck and Take My Breath Away, and a least favorite,You Are the One,but I still love it.Yes,he certainly has the Stevie sound and influence and I adore it!
You are my shining star E!!I need more!!!!!!

tjvalerio - March 28, 2007 05:45 AM (GMT)
It's one of my faves. the beat is sick.

san_che - March 28, 2007 11:48 PM (GMT)
I knew my fellow E-trainers wouldn't underrate such a great performance by Elliott. :etrain:

It really is a great song. The whole album is.

musicmovesme - March 29, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
I love singing along to it and one day while my 22 yr old son was visiting I saw him start to groove along like he just couldn't help himself. Elliott's vocals are really stellar on this song--one of the best on the whole cd. The musical arrangement may be retro (like an Elton Johnish pop piano arrangement with a Stevie Wonderish vocal) but that doesn't bother me any since I have a big soft spot for that type of music and it's been a long time since someone came along who sang like this. I love the runs Elliott does on the word "fall"..."pride goes before a fall".

Listening to the cd through headphones makes me appreciate the complexity of all the musical arrangements, the different instruments and just can't agree that they are bad and are actually quite good--there is much more to them than appears on the surface. Even "Movin' On has some great cymbol work that underlies and supports the whole song. "You Are The One" has a simply outstanding string and piano arrangement. The music for both "Free" and "You Take My Breath Away" is fantastic--the musical bridge on YTMBA is nirvana to me and the guitar solo--woo! that one little bit was perfection and better than all the fancy overblown guitar licks on Daughtry's whole cd. Who can fault the way "I'm The Man" is arranged?--perfectomundo. "Free" has a fantastic piano part and all that funky organ-- love, love, love it. The Stargate produced songs are fine too for being electronic music. "Alright" may have the catchiest darn drumbeat on a song in forever. This cd is so eclectic. That is its weakness and its strength. Few are going to be happy with the whole thing...but it really is good as a whole.

Most singers have one or at most two styles they attempt to showcase. Then they fit all the songs into those styles. The voice is still the main attraction here and what is great is that as beautiful as Elliott's voice is it doesn't just melt into any of the music but stands out from it.

What actually sounds best recorded isn't necessarily the beautiful ballad voice, or his Stevie voice or Donny stylized voice but what he taps into when he lets his own voice just flow naturally with the music. "I'll Make You Dance" is a perfect example of this and would have been a huge huge hit in the Disco era. "I'm In Love With You Forever" is a great free flowing vocal too. I hope he eventually includes some of these songs on his greatest hits cd.

We all know how effective and amazing Elliott is at singing heartfelt, soulful, angelic, sophisticated, upbeat funky but there is another side we are now hearing in his recording and live performances that is more likely to eventually establish him as a unique legend.

I don't know how it was recorded but he tapped into his best vocal "character" ever on "Whiter Shade of Pale" and built the song slowly and steadily wailing it out like he was a legendary rock star from the era when rock was all wrapped up in the blues. All the pretty controlled r&b singing is gone on this recording. While it is soothing to the ears when he sings pretty man, where he goes when he gets down on "Whiter Shade of Pale" (and a little bit "Movin On" recently on Ellen) is truly soul stirring and breathtaking. WSOP is an all time classic song which only makes it all the more impressive what he did with it. Fancy runs are one thing but could just anybody get up and wail like this and be able to expertly build the wailing in intensity to a mindblowing point? Come to think of it how many guys can do runs AND wail like Elliott? Somebody on the AI boards compared Elliott's voice to Clapton's guitar but after hearing this Elliott's voice could be somewhat like Hendrix's guitar.

It doesn't matter that the lyrics are esoteric and make absolutely no sense at all--you just feel like you're hearing a legendary "straight from the gut put it all out there" performance. The music thankfully was untampered with from the original organ arrangement. The vocal is a five star masterpiece.

musicmovesme, your post moved me!

I was thinking Elliott's WSOP should be released as a remake. There are so many young people who never heard of it, OMG.

et4elliott - March 29, 2007 02:33 PM (GMT)
To be honest, when I first heard it I did not like it. However, after listening to the CD over and over and over again, I like it, although not one of my faves on the CD. But it is good!

wowhesgood - March 29, 2007 02:38 PM (GMT)
MMM, thank you for your insightful and passionate post. You are spot on!

Musicmovesme,

I like the way you are thinking with Elliott's "Greatest hits cd"

courtie59 - March 29, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
I do love Find a Way (love everything on the album) but it didn't 'get to me' as much as it could have, considering the subject matter.
But when I saw the clip of Elliott singing this one live (youtube - must have been the Best Buy performance), I found the song far more powerful. Elliott's performance of it, and the evident passion he puts into the words, put across a much stronger message than the song alone.
They should make a proper video clip for this one.

parsimmon - March 29, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
The more I hear FAW, the more impact it has on me. I really get the Stevie Wonder vibe on it, I love, love, the message. I identify with the lyrics to such a degree that it's one of my favorite social awareness songs. I grew up on Folk music, ( my choice, I just naturally gravitated toward that genre) and Joan Baez, Judy Collins songs impacted and shaped my live. They live in me and identified me as much as I indentified with them. Arlo Guthrie and Dylan too, of course. This is my home territory here.
