Title: Something To Think About-Male Singers
Description: when was the last time......
mominny - March 27, 2007 08:29 AM (GMT)
When was the last time a pure singer who is male entered the mix? We have lots of great girls who have tremedous voices and some wannabes. The males out there now are alternative, Justin Timberlake wannabes, etc.
When was the last time a guy had a tremendous voice like Elliott;s who can sing any genre? I can't remember. Anybody else have examples from the last 5 or 10 years or so?
Elliott is going to be around a looooooooooooooong while!

My parents' generation had the rat pack, and this generation has Elliott. And who did my generation have? Nada. Can't exactly compare the Rolling Stones to Elliott. (Funny thing I read just recently is that Mick Jagger actually got himself a vocal coach when the group started to become popular.)

As cheesy as he could get, Elvis had one of those voices. I used to own a country albumn by Elvis and my Mom had his gospel and rock albumns. He truly did have a tremendous instrument and when you just listen to some of his vocals it's just outstanding.
Still, not the bumper crop of amazing female singers.
sherwood - March 27, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
You're right Esti, I forgot about Elvis. My husband has to be one of his most ardent fans!
ElliottCat101 - March 27, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
What about Josh Groban? He's amazing!
I actually like male singers better than female singers in general... I just think (most) guys have a nicer quality to their voice.
sherwood - March 27, 2007 08:04 PM (GMT)
Even though most male singers today sound like male singers?
ETA I meant sound like FEMALE singers of course.

Josh Groban is the only one I can think of too, at least for my generation.
I also enjoy male singers better than female singers.

Elliott's got a lot of unique things going for him as a male singer. Outstanding female singers are a dime a dozen compared to males. So he has an automatic in with people who are tired of listening to ladies sing all the time or maybe prefer hearing a fine male voice anyway. He has a slightly higher voice and a more contemporary sound than Josh Grobin who has a wonderful voice but sings too operatic to appeal beyond Adult Contemporary audiences. Elliott has a voice that is more r&b sounding than probably any white guy. His voice is deeper and more manly sounding than the average tenor males who have boyish voices. It definitely possesses an indefinable sex appeal, is suitable for ballads, fast or moderate r&b, even rock songs.
His voice to me sounds like a mix of some of my favorite male voices together into one blend: a little bit Tony Bennett, a little Stevie Wonder, a little Elvis, a little Billy Joel, a little Elton John, A little Luther Vandross, A little Marvin Gaye, a little Paul McCartney. Guess it's why I fell in love with it right off.
Can't think of a guy who has come along in roughly 20 years (maybe more) that can compare to Elliott's voice.

Excuse me, but I haven't been in North America for years and years, so I've never heard of Josh Groban. I would never be able to hear a song on the radio and say, 'listen, that's Josh Grobin!" See...I don't even know if it's 'an' or 'in'. If he was so dang good, wouldn't he be known internationally?
Elliott will be!

THE ONLY 2 MALE SINGERS I CAN COMPARE TO ELLIOTT IS JOSH GROBAN AND LUTHER VANDROSS. I LIKE BOTH OF THEM VERY MUCH, BUT NEITHER OF THEM DO TO ME WHAT ELLIOTT DOES. E HAS THE SMOOTHEST VOICE EVER. :etrain: 4EVER

I like Josh Grobin too, but like the versatality of Elliott's because he can sing anything! I myself cannot thing of anyone that is diversified in the last 20 years either.
I listen to Dave Mason who's voice I think is incredible, but he is certainly not mainstream. But even Elliott;s voice and styles are more diversified. It just cuts to the sole. That is what gets me about Elliott---it is the pure voice.
Is there anything he cannot sing well? I doubt it.

He seems to be pretty popular internationally as well as in the US.

Elliott has one of those voices that the minute you hear him, you know it's him. And he can sing anything.
For me growing up in the 70's and 80's I'd have to say that Elton John was and still is one who has a pure voice.
There are a very very few male vocalists that I can honestly say I could just sit and listen to for a long long while, never tiring of their voice EVER.
The GREAT Nat King Cole is one not from my generation but whom I adore.
Sting is one from my generation and from the present that is a musical genius.
And many may not know this guy, but Kevin Max (Smith) from DC Talk (who is on his own now) is another whose voice is extremely captivating.
There are those great soul voices like Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye as well that are amazing.
Elvis was extremely diverse as well. But he's not from the past 10 years.
Another musical genius, he was.
I love Josh Groban as well. Bring on the operatic tone to his voice. Love it!
And then there is Elliott. He is the one from this generation that compares with none. The voice that touches the soul. :heartbeat:

Wow - you and I are on the same page exactly. There are not that many truly great male voices with any personality. There are great vocalists who can cover a song with technically perfect vocals (think Clay Aiken) but very few who are distinctive artists whose passion comes through on vocals that you never tire of. I agree with all of these - even Josh Groban - his voice has the "magic" even if it is "operatic" in nature.
imthesame - March 30, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Elliott has the most beautiful voice in the history of the world - why are we afraid to say so? Twenty years, thirty year, one hundred twenty years - no one, no where compares to the beauty, soul, passion, richness, molten magic of Elliott Yamin's golden voice. I like what you said, Musicmovesme. And truly, I've liked lots of singers in my life - I appreciate the voice quality of those that you've mentioned and of many more, but no one, ever has stopped me dead in my tracks like Elliott. I will never be the same - why were we so blessed to live in his generation?
mominny - March 30, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
Hey I like Nat King Cole too even though he is not from my generation---Bobby Darin too! Too bad these guys did not get a chance to sing today's music. I wonder what it would be like to hear a Whiter Pale of Shade from these two. I am not sure Elvis could pull it off...it would be a little different.
Elton John is also one of my favorites! I actually got to see him live when Yellow Brook Road came (oops now I am dating myself) I don't get tired of him either.
I think Elliott compares with all these guys. I do not think I will ever get tired of his voice and that is what makes him a classic.

Geez--here I go again--Yellow Brick Rd
sherwood - March 30, 2007 06:52 PM (GMT)
Remember Love Lies Bleeding? Even though there were so many more famous ones in Yellow Brick Road, that was my fave.
parsimmon - March 30, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
Elliott is the best singer I've every heard in my life, and this includes the top rated singers of 4 generations for me.
Elliott has the combination of ALL my favorite singers from each respective genre. John Lennon, Paul McCartney,Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Tony Bennett and the ability to phrase like Frank Sinatra. He's incredible awesome. A natural when it comes to musical talent. And ...he is a good songwriter too. Movin On is genius in my book.

Of course I know Kevin Max, his voice is AH-MAZING  Michael Tait's voice is incredible too, he has so much passion when he sings.
I would have to say my favorite singer, Phil Joel (Urry) could be one of those people, his voice is really distinctive in that when you hear him he sounds like nobody but himself. It can be gritty but angelic at the same time and he can belt it out and sing in falsetto with such skill too, and CDs don't do it justice, you have to hear him live. The songs that he has written have touched me like no other and probably nobody else will be able to do that, especially since I have met him and he is one of the sweetest, kindest, most beautiful souls I've seen.
Nevertheless Elliott is still pretty freakin' incredible and is one of the most promising singers I've seen since I was born. No doubt he will be around for a long time, and he too like PJU can put so much passion into his singing, and it touches me too. His phrasing, his soulfulness, just everything is great, he is one of the best!
Other awesome singers I should mention are Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Elton John, Freddie Mercury (RIP :( ), Steve Perry....hmmm oh yeah George Michael!
Yeah I pretty much like male singers better, there is something about their voices that just does it for me more.

I would agree E's voice is possibly one of the most pleasing male voices of all time. He has a smooth velvety sound and yet a passionate vibrato (like Elvis) and can wail it out too when he wants (like Joplin). I've never felt so strongly compelled to support a singer like this before but all my other favorite singers were successful established recording artists when I first heard them. I just feel Elliott belongs with them in a pantheon of the great singers and one day as he realizes his full potential with classic songs he will be included in it by public acknowledgement and acclaim.
One thing he has established already with his new cd--no one will accuse him ever again of singing karaoke! I'd like to watch people just try and sing karaoke to his songs. In one way he has already cut a unique classic cd because no one else can sing the way he does.

As a kid, my first favorite singer was Stevie Wonder... Then in the 80's and 90's, Matthew Ward (from the 2nd chapter of acts brother/sister/sister group) was right up there, too - if you've not heard him, check out his earlier stuff from the 1970's to the 1990's (it's hard to find these days because most of it is out of print). When I hear Elliott, it reminds me of both of Stevie Wonder and Matthew Ward, singing with a beautiful voice from the heart.
And I agree with not getting tired of hearing Elliott sing. When I first heard him on American Idol a year ago, I told my husband and kids, "I could listen him all day". He has a very special gift.
musicmovesme - April 2, 2007 01:42 AM (GMT)
OMG...mplat you are right about E sounding a bit like Matthew Ward from 2nd Chapter of Acts. I saw them in concert way back in my teen years and never would have connected the two singers but you are right, he could wail and sing soul pretty great for a white guy and had just a beautiful voice much like Elliott's.
