Title: Favorite Romantic Comedies
Description: those melting moments

lex - March 27, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
I finally saw "Bridget Jones's Diary" and I totally fell in love with it. I absolutely adore Colin Firth as it turns out! Anyway, I started thinking about which romantic comedies really inspire those melting, "be-still-my-beating-heart" kind of moments. So here's my start if anyone wants to join in:

- It Happened One Night (particularly the part where Clark admits he loves her to the father and then says "don't mind me, I'm a little screwy myself")
- While You Were Sleeping (mmmm...Bill Pullman)
- Bridget Jones's Diary (all about Colin for me)

So, in the end, I'm a sappy, cheesy girl--long live schmaltz!

I agree with While You Were Sleeping. That one makes me squee with joy every time!

I also really liked The Holiday... was that a romantic comedy?

When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, and The Wedding Singer. Classics B)

Lex,
I agree with your two. Never saw IHON, so I can't comment on that.
But yeah, I love Colin Firth too. That ending scene where Renee runs out in her sweater and little else and he wraps his coat around her and they finally kiss- wow, that was great. I could watch that movie over and over for just that scend.

Also, a bunch of us love Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping.
We talked about it in another thread-- those bedroom eyes of his--
he should do more romantic comedies. I think I have lost count how many times I have seen this movie.

I loved While You Were Sleeping, too! Sigh.

Bridget Jones' Diary was the last movie we actually saw at a cinema I think, because someone overseas highly recommended it and I didn't want to wait for it until the DVD came out. Thoroughly enjoyable! I saw When Harry me Sally just last year, and that was cute too. I also really liked 'Clueless' with Alicia Silverstone...whatever happened to her, after she made that movie she was considered the hottest thing around. I think she did a flopped TV series and then gained too much weight to be marketable.

While You Were Sleeping is probably my fave. I fell in love w/ Bill Pullman in that movie and I adore Glynis as Elsie, Loved the Christmas theme and everything

"You've Got Mail." Tom Hanks is my favorite actor, and he and Meg Ryan are so good together.

Other favorites that I never get tired of watching:
-While You Were Sleeping
-How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
-Fools Rush In
-One Fine Day
-It Could Happen To You

I love Clueless! I kind of forgot about Alicia, where has she been? Paul Rudd (Josh) seems to be everywhere now. Speaking of Clueless, I'm also a big fan of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow; I guess I'm just a sucker for that story.

CLUELESS!!! That is one of my favorite movies! I know all the lines, LOL

wowhesgood - March 28, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
Sabrina (not sure if it is a comedy?)
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Kate Hudson is so funny and Matthew Mconaughey...yum!)
It Could Happen to You
While You Were Sleeping (like everyone else, love Bill Pullman in this)
Bridget Jones Diaries (both of them)
Sweet Home Alabama
Cousins

wowhesgood- I like "Sweet Home Alabama" too. Probably because Patrick Demspsey was in it...lol. I thought his character should have won out in the end.

I LOVE THE HOLIDAY!!!

Serendipity and Ghost. Although Ghost was a little more dramatic, it had its funny moments in it. Plus I think the pottery scene is probably one of the classic romantic moments of cinema history, JMO :)

The restraunt scene in When Harry Met Sally is the classic comedic moment. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal were awesome in that movie.

Just Like Heaven was also very good. I liked the unique storyline and the ending was very hopeful.

Guess Who with Ashton Kutcher was hilarious and had a great social message about love.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was very funny. I can relate to it somewhat. I'm Italian and our customs are similar in some respects.

Then of course, you gotta have Wedding Crashers on this list. Hilarious from start to finish. Not the conventional romantic comedy, but love nonetheless emerges the victor there.

I forgot about My Big Fat Greek Wedding, add that to my list. Thanks SMR for the reminder! ;)

You've Got Mail is one of my favorites if not my favorite romantic comedy of all time.

And if I had to list a great one from the 50's .....I'd have to say, "Singin' in the Rain". I just love Gene Kelly.

wowhesgood - April 1, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I remembered another one. THe Family Man. I love Nicholas Cage!

ThankYouElliott - April 2, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)

Has anybody said "Notting Hill"? :valentine:

nymphadora - April 2, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
These are some romantic comedies that I liked: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 13 Going on 30, Just Like Heaven, Sleepless in Seattle, Shallow Hal, Housesitter, Serendipity, 50 First Dates, Head Over Heels, Singin' in the Rain, to name a few.

ThankYouElliott - April 2, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)

I don't suppose that "Return To Me" is really a Romantic Comedy, but it's awesome! :valentine:

Berkana - April 4, 2007 11:26 AM (GMT)
Ummm....

Love Actually
It Happened One Night
Love Story
I guess it's not really a comedy, but Jennifer does says a few funny things.
Bringing Up Baby
The Princess Bride (WHAT? LOL)
Sense and Sensibility (The one with Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, and Kate Winslet)

ThankYouElliott - April 4, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)

I just realized that I have never seen "The Holiday". What is wrong with me?

SoulMusicRocks - April 5, 2007 02:40 AM (GMT)
I forgot "Somethings Gotta Give" and "As Good As It Gets". Jack Nicholson is a brilliant actor. He has a talent for internally knowing how to frame a scene with dramatically powerful sarcasam.

ThankYouElliott - April 6, 2007 01:48 AM (GMT)

I never got to see "Love Actually" either.

SoulMusicRocks - April 7, 2007 01:59 AM (GMT)
I like romantic comedies because they inspire the hopeful romantic :)

All of these movies you all have mentioned represent idealized life that we seek to actualize through who we are as people. It appeals to our greatest hope for finding the proverbial "soulmate", which I do believe really does exist beyond a movie. There really is someone for everyone out there. You just have to be patient because let's face it, there has to be some funny/difficult stuff before you get to your happy ending :)

Wow, this is technically random.....still on topic though haha

shatner8 - April 15, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
My Favorite romantic moment of all movies, Breakfast at Tiffany's that scene in the rain with Audrey Hepburn holding her wet cat in the alley, the music is playing "Moon River" and I am sobbing, as usual, ... while Audrey is kissing her man.

Pride and Prejudice-the Colin Firth movie, absolutely romantic

Love Actually- one of my favs

CanadianFan - April 16, 2007 12:24 AM (GMT)
My Fair Lady ranks high on my list of romantic musical comedies. Funny Face is a classic.

pdlvne - April 20, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
My fav - Pretty Woman. Can watch it over and over again and still LOVE IT.
