The first time I heard Elliott's CD, I didn't know what to think. This was Elliott's music, and I was used to hearing Elliott singing the covers of different genres and different styles. But styles and genres I was familiar with, if not the lyrics and song themselves.
Elliott's songs are rather modern for me. They are also innovative. Elliott is gifted so he can sing these songs. He reminds me of the Beatles. Everytime they had a new album..from Rubber Soul to Revolver..to..Magical Mystery Tour..to White Album...there was music and even instruments I was not familiar with, but soon became a part of the music scene. But the vocals of John and Paul never disappointed. Every song on a Beatle album became a favorite song of mine, because of the gift of the artist singing it. This is what is happening with Elliott's songs. And on another note...I still see the love songs as songs to God, just like I did with the Beatles love songs. They are just inspirational to me. I like his album. It's inspiring..and it closes with the perfect vocal. Elliott's version of A SONG FOR YOU...the more you listen to him sing it, the more you will agree with Randy. Don't let the arrangement take away from the vocals of this song. It's meant to be sung the way Elliot sings it.
Pars, I think you've hit on something that we've all had to come to terms with in hearing his cd for the first few listens. We were so used to him singing covers we didn't really know what to expect of his cd. Hearing him singing original stuff did take a bit to get used to. I'm not saying any of it is bad, quite the contrary, it is great stuff. I enjoy that the lyrics are about love. His cd always puts me in a good mood, even in my dark moments.
So many reviewers criticize the simplicity of the lyrics. Personally, I don't find them all that simple since I wasn't able to predict what the next words would be. Like others have said, there have been plenty of songs, including Beatles hits, that had very simple lyrics. Also, many reviews have spoken of the sparce accompaniments, calling it weak production and such, when really, I believe this is the sound Elliott was trying to produce.
He can be proud of what he has done.
Parsimmon...I could not agree with you more!!! You Are the One is still my fave song (although I love the accoustical version better than the one on the CD)...and I realized that it was because that song went deep into my SOUL...it can be sung to a spouse/significant other...but I felt my spirit had lifted it to the heavens...it was more of a song of worship to me...and I LOVE it...
and the other songs grow on me more and more every time I listen...which is daily (at least!)...it's a CD that I can share (and did) with my 2 girls (16 and 22)...and they love it as much as I do...Elliott is so fresh...he transcends genres and genders and generations...it's amazing...

I agree. I was snapping my fingers today..and my mom mentioned that I "snap pretty good".. I laughed and said it was because Elliott has me snapping my fingers. The clapping on "Moving On' and "Wait for You" has me snapping instead. It only takes one hand, ya know.
Anyway, I put the song on for my mom....and before I knew it she was singing the chorus along with Elliott. At the end of the song, you would have thought it was an oldie...or she'd heard it a a hundred times. She said.."I love that song", like it was a favorite she'd always had.
