Title: Robin Thicke Vs. Elliott Yamin
Description: Who is the Better R&B Singer?

daveylow - May 3, 2007 02:23 AM (GMT)
I just finished watching AI tonight and one of the guests was Robin Thicke who was introduced as the #1 R&B artist right now.

I know he's very, very popular but I didn't like the song he sang or his voice. Elliott can sing rings around him.
I kept thinking, American Idol has their own wonderful R&B singer, why isn't he on the program? It's ridiculous and shows you how misguided the AI producers are.

elliottfan78 - May 3, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
That's the first time I've ever heard of Robin Thicke. Just based on that song, it seems like he has one note - falsetto :rotfl:

E can definitely sing rings around this guy! :rocker:

atlantiskat - May 3, 2007 02:29 AM (GMT)
SORRY IF THIS OFFENDS ANY ROBIN THICKE FANS..... BUT HE SOUNDS LIKE A FEMALE. HE IS POPULAR, BUT I REALLY DON'T SEE THE BIG DEAL. TRUE R&B SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE THAT, AND YES I HAVE BEEN A BIG R&B FAN SINCE I WAS 8 YRS OLD. :etrain: 4LIFE

NOT EVEN IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS ELLIOTT.

leefromva - May 3, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
Elliott hands down. No comparison

daveylow - May 3, 2007 02:36 AM (GMT)
To be fair, I'd never heard Thicke before and I know he's wildly popular right now. I doubt if he always sings falsetto. But his song choice was awful for the show.
If Elliott had sung Wait for You, the audience would have been crazy!

samimama123 - May 3, 2007 02:49 AM (GMT)
He sounded like he had on TOO tighty whiteys..yuck..hated it..I want a male singer to sound like a man...

luvthatelliott - May 3, 2007 03:03 AM (GMT)
Reminded me of one of the Wiggles and sounded like his pants were 3 sizes to small - a sissy wiggle. I think that's what I'll call him - lol

chloewannabee - May 3, 2007 03:09 AM (GMT)
WHO PUT ELLIOTT AND ROBIN IN THE SAME SENTENCE???????????????????????????SERIOUSLY, I WAS EMBARRASSED FOR HIM! HOW,HOW,HOW IS HE THE "#1" R& B SINGER?????????????
I'VE BEEN HEARING HIS NAME ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT TONIGHT WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD HIM, AND GOD WILLING, THE LAST!

Amee - May 3, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
The only reason I've even heard of Robin is because when I have Elliott playing in iTunes, Robin Thicke is listed in the iTunes mini-store at the bottom as something other listeners bought. So there's apparently Elliott fans who are buying his album. I found the guy scary tonight on AI. Men shouldn't be singing soprano.

realitymom - May 3, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
I've heard ABOUT him, but never actually HEARD him till tonight. Are you serious? THIS guy is #1? Ummmmmmm, WHY?!?! Is his voice really that high or does he MAKE it that high? I kept waiting for his 'real' voice, did I hear it? If so....oh boy. Not a fan....at all.
Elliott has a beautiful vocal range with passion & emotion vibrating through it. Robin Thicke has a falsetto with pitchy, wavering vocals that seriously sounds painful after the first couple versus. ugh.

luvthatelliott - May 3, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
My collie had a barking fit while he sang... smart dog

ucanhavmycake78 - May 3, 2007 03:27 AM (GMT)
elliott's thicker ;-)

goelliott - May 3, 2007 03:31 AM (GMT)
Elliott >>>>>>>>>>>> Robin

Nuff said. ;)

loveelliott - May 3, 2007 03:52 AM (GMT)
Agree with all of you. This guy is nothing. Elliott sings so much better. I had heard of him, never heard him sing and hope I never hear him sing again!!     :eww: :eww: :eww: :yuck: :yuck:

jockeyrep - May 3, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
I GUESS HAVING A FAMOUS DAD CAN GET YOU A RECORDING CONTRACT EVEN THOUGH YOU CANNOT SING. I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EARS ON THAT SONG AND PERFORMER. SORRY FOR ANY OF YOU WHO ARE FANS OF HIS, BUT HE CAN'T SING!!! ELLIOTT, WELL NEED I SAY MORE. THE EARS DON'T LIE.

itslate - May 3, 2007 05:17 AM (GMT)
I hear this song all the time while I'm waiting to hear WFY played. Yeah one note falsetto :rotfl:

What is it that makes this high pitch sound so popular today. Thinking Chris from AI this year, Justin T, and Thicke? Well it's not my favorite... I always liked deep male voices IMHO.

When they said top R&B artist, all I could think was they put Elliott in the Pop catagory... :hello2: what's up with all that? PLEASEEEEEEEEEE!

chloewannabee - May 3, 2007 10:09 AM (GMT)
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I keep thinking that it was a joke!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Not that I am biased or anything...But I thought Robin Thicke was extremely BORING. I kept thinking...WHO is this guy...How did he get where he is on the billboards??? Yes, Our Elliott is 100x better and deserves to be showcased on Idol...However, his team may elect not to have him participate. Why? I wouldn't have a clue...the TV exposure is top notch! BUT...Don't give up hope...He may surprise us and show up oneday.

You might be right about that, I'm hoping for a surprise. I think Robin Thicke's being on there was associated with the American Idol Hit List thingy. Being on AI is great exposure but I'm thinking E's exposure this weekend on NASCAR is even better because "new" people are going to be seeing him.

lindagt - May 3, 2007 12:09 PM (GMT)
I kind of think it's like comparing apples to oranges.(Or maybe oranges to grapefruits - ha!)

They are both R&B, but completely different styles. I prefer Elliott's voice - but I can see how Robin Thicke brings something different to the table that some might enjoy.

wowhesgood - May 3, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
I was so not impressed and like most of you wondered how the heck he's #1 in R&B! I too thought it was extremely boring, absolutely no substance to his voice and certainly no connection to his song. Give me Elliot anyday. The R&B community needs to take notice of our boy in a big way!

THEY WILL!!

Robin Thicke? I didn't even hear his name before. I didn't like his voice. My aunt said that he was like a gay. Lol. Sorry to offend his fans but how did he become #1? :dunce:

Elliott is a kazillion times better than him.

katirpet - May 3, 2007 12:47 PM (GMT)
Robin Thicke's performance left me very cold. I am not being biased when I say that Elliott's voice has it all over Thicke's voice. I love the sultry masculinity that defines Elliott's voice. I like a little falsetto but not a whole darn song of it. When Elliott is tired you can hear it in his voice. He seems to go up a little and his song is not as relaxed as it should be. You can hear him straining for the notes. And even at that, Elliott is still by far the better singer.

mombell - May 3, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
if you hear any of robin's other songs then you would know that he is not a one note falsetto...he is really know as a writer...his cd is a collection of all kinds of music...he has been a popular song writer for some time...songs for christina and so on..i don't like all the songs on his cd but he has paid his dues in music, not on his dad's name...i heard about him and listened to his cd before i burnt it...elliott is totally different than him...i love ALL of the songs on elliot's cd
i like all kinds of music and i like to hear the artists that people are talking about so i checked him out...to each his own but elliott is my #1 r&b right now

he has been in the music business for a long time and is happily married for 2 years

estilrose - May 3, 2007 01:14 PM (GMT)
I have heard of Robin Thicke for a long time. He used to go by just Thicke. I actually like the song but I'm not a fan of the falsetto. On the other hand, there are people who are very into R&B who do like Robin and the falsetto of this song.

E4me - May 3, 2007 01:23 PM (GMT)
I thought that you had to actually have soul to be an R&B singer. Sorry but I didn't hear any last night.

Robin Thicke may be a good songwriter, but I just don't get him as a singer based on this song.

chattycb - May 3, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)
Saw Robin Thicke on Ellen's show a few months back. He was singing entirely in falsetto then as well. Didn't like it then nor now. I haven't heard his album nor do I care too. His dad, Alan Thicke, did start out his career as a singer.
But to put him in the same sentence as our Elliott, well, it's just sacre bleu, imo.

PoorMe - May 3, 2007 02:22 PM (GMT)
I was not at all impressed with Robin Thicke last night. I just don't get the songs that are all falsetto. Not effective at all, IMHO. Nothing sexy about it. When Elliott used his falsetto in Take My Breath Away it just knocked me off my feet! THAT'S what falsetto is all about! Its an exclamation point in the song.

Glad someone has heard of him here! I actually have his first CD and I like it quite a bit. He writes some pretty interesting stuff and has some latin infused R&B that works well. Most of his songs on that CD are not falsetto, or if they are, it's just a little part of the song. Having said that, I do agree that his song last night was just plain bad.

Benito - May 3, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
Robin Who? Too girly for me. NAH, not my type. Sorry.

I totally agree with lindaqt. I think he is very talented and sings very in tune. I also think this song is very melodic and I like the chords and tone of the song but I DON"T like the overt sexual overtones. This is very popular in pop music today. I wouldn't buy his cd and I would choose Elliott over him every time but I do think he is talented. Just different.
I WILL say I think Thicke is better than most of the cr** I've been listening to lately while waiting to hear WFY. Fergie? Rihanna? Lean like a Cholo? Man, that stuff SUCKS.

hip-yamized - May 3, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I had never heard of Robin Thicke before I saw his name on Elliott's AOL Music page. "Sounds Like" note. Now says ROBIN Thicke, previously just said Thicke. I checked him out then wasn't impressed. Saw him on Oprah, now on AI...still not impressed. (He is however a very nice guy and very humble)

My husband absolutely HATED Robin Thicke. He thought that if Thicke was one of those hopeful singers that were auditioning for Idol, he would have been given air time: as one of the comedy/ bad singer acts.

I had heard of Robin Thicke's name, but had never listened to him sing before. I can't say that I would want to hear him sing again.

mombell - May 3, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
i would never judge an artist by one song but that is just me

jojojam1204 - May 3, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
All I can say is if Robin Thicke is the #1 R&B artist right now, then thee is no guessing how far Elliott can go!

I love R&B, heard of Robin but never heard him until the other night. He did nothing for me...not my cup of tea.

I wouldn't say he is bad, because he obviously appeals to a lot of people, but give me ELLIOTT any day...........I feel E is about to blow up big time! :etrain:

donnysgirl - May 3, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
Robin Thicke is cool. He has some good music, but I have seen him live and he sounds better on wax. Unlike our Elliott he doesn't move you when you hear him live...but he is a talented guy. With the success of Timberlake, Thicke, and Winehouse I HATE that Elliott is not marketed as R&B. Even Fergie is getting played on the R&B stations.

lindagt - May 3, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
Well - don't get me wrong - I LOVE Elliott's CD. I LOVE anything he sings, records, performs. But Elliott made a record that's more pop than R&B. I think that was by design, to broaden his base of support. Pop reaches more people in general than R&B, even if R&B makes up a large part of the playlist on Top 40 stations. His management team has made the decision to market him as a Pop/Top 40 artist. Wait for You definitely has an R&B feel - but many of the songs don't.

When Elliott makes a record that is more clearly R&B, he will be recognized as an R&B artist.

Okay let's get this straight. I LOVE tenors. And I actually really like falsetto when it is done RIGHT *cough PHIL JOEL cough*. But man, dunno what was up with RT, he sounded like a girl! Timberlake tends to sound quite feminine too sometimes.

So yeah, OBVIOUSLY Elliott.
