Title: What Are Your Other Hobbies?
AvivaDove - June 13, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
Besides Elliott, what are your other hobbies. If you're like me, I'm sure they've all taken the back burner to Elliott and the E-train.
Do you write music, play in a band, sing, act, play or watch sports, cook, do crafts, collect something, belong to other entertainers' fan sites, travel, read. belong to a book club, sew, paint, etc.......?
I am a lifelong Barbie doll collector. I belong to some doll clubs. I also like to bake, walk , watch AI , listen to Elliott's cd and have fun with my kids 8 and 4. My kids and husband are gigiantic Elliott fans too. Everyday on the way home from school, the little one takes his water bottle, pretends it's a microphone and sings Wait For You.
What about everybody else?
GraceStreet - June 13, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
It's funny that you collect Barbies. I don't collect them, but a few years ago, I tried customizing them, specifically giving them celebrity makeovers. The only ones I finished (I have a few that I either started repainting or I got the dolls and the materials for their costumes and just haven't gotten to doing them yet) were a set of dolls made over to look like Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellweger in
Chicago:

I haven't done anything creative like this in far too long, though.
Sadness... :(
SoulMusicRocks - June 13, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
This is a cool thread.
I love writing in all different styles. Usually it is in the form of poetry or short stories, but I sometimes write essays on philosophical, political, and psychological topics that interest me. Hopefully one day I'd like to sit and write an entire novel. The tough part is not the creative process of being inspired to write, but getting motivated to try and find a great publisher. lol. Writing is definitely a passion of mine.
Music is another favorite passion for me. I've sang in choirs and worked on writing some of my own songs through life. I find music exhilirating and emotionally moving when I'm either hearing something great or singing something I really connect with. Music whether insturmental or vocal is incredible.
Also, reading is a definte part of my life. I like reading non-fictional prose that illuminates the life of some important person or event in history that changed a nation. It's just basically everything lol. Essays, articles, non-fictional and fictional novels, prose, poetry, and everything in between. I think the more you read, the more you gain insight into very diverse beliefs and expands your mind. Ironically, the more you read others views, the more effectively you are able to establish and argue your own.
Those are my main passions in life.
AvivaDove - June 13, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)
Grace,
I love your Barbies. I'm sure you're aware that One of a Kind customized dolls are big sellers at doll shows, Barbie conventions, on ebay or by commission.
I'm 44. I basically collect Barbies from my childhood-Francie, Skipper, Ken, Midge, Christie, P.J, Stacey with a strong emphasis on Francie. I also collect Chatty Cathy dolls. I've been in that collectors' club since 1990.
There is a Ken friend mold Fashion Fever Kurt. He looks just like Elliott, but with straighter hair, the length on the cd cover and no facial hair. I asked a famous artist if she would make a Kurt into an Elliott. She said she only makes a character doll once. She was working on one that looks like Elliott from when he was on AI. If you can make an Elliott, like on the cd cover let me know. The current Blaine doll has the same face as Kurt. I'm sure that any non doll collectors reading this think I'm way out there......

Soulmusicrocks,
I admire you. I used to be able to write. I recently found all of my college research papers and creative writing papers. I wrote poetry, songs, short stories, and comedy.
I wrote beautifully written, interesting theory papers. My degree was in social work. Now, I read them and have no idea what I was writing about. I'm around kids all day. My brain turned to mush.

Thanks AvivaDove.
I'm working towards becoming a Psychologist now. So that is right in the realm of Social Work. It's definitely good to try to keep our favorite hobby's and passions alive through time. I wish I could make a living as a writer! lol. But, probably not. I really enjoy working with people to help solve personal problems, so Psych. is a perfect field.
I actually just wrote a research paper on Laughter and Humor this past Spring. The focus on disorders is important, but I think comprehending positive prospects of psycho-social development are equally pertinent to promoting a healthy and happy people. That's why I picked laughter as a topic.

I have a very musical family. I can sing, play the flute, and play the piano.
here is me at a band concert:

to the left of me, or technically to the right, is Aja (asia). Next to her is Bekah. They are sort of my friends, but not really.
I can write songs, but I'm not very good at it. I made three, well four songs and put them on a c-d that I made. I'm making a christmas c-d and will put a song on my blog come november. This time I'm going to have some of my talented friends sing with me on some songs. I have played flute for ..um 4 years? yah and like 7 1/2 years on the piano. My mom helps me a lot. She is my piano teacher. I'm going to choir this year in school. I really love singing! One song is on my blog. Other then that, i can cross stitch, although I don't think I have ever finished a project!
AvivaDove - June 13, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
Soulmusicrocks,
Good luck with your endeavors in psychology. If you're not already familiar with psychodrama, you might want to google it. A long time ago,I had the honor of meeting and briefly working with J.L Moreno's widow, the great Zerka Moreno.
I won't go into such details here, but it's a creative group therapy technique that you might want to investigate. Humor, opera, even Elliott's music could be incorporated into the technique. It works with all populations. I used psychodrama with nursing home residents.
AvivaDove - June 13, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
Junker,
Your band picture didn't come through, at least not on my screen.
I'm very impressed with all of your musical abilities. I tried the violin at 9, but quit. My father was very disappointed. You're so lucky to have all of those lessons. I always wanted piano lessons. After the violin fiasco, it never happened. I took some voice lessons in my 20's.

WOW AVIVADOVE, I REMEMBER ALL THOSE DOLLS FROM WHEN I WAS A KID. CHATTY CATHY IS THAT THE ONE WITH THE SAILER DRESS ON AND IT'S LIKE 3 FEET TALL? I HAD ALL THOSE DOLLS YOU MENTIONED. NOW THE ONLY DOLL I WANT IS THAT LIVING DOLL NAMED ELLIOTT. :rotfl:
:etrain: 4LIFE
AvivaDove - June 14, 2007 02:29 AM (GMT)
It's strange for me to see those beautiful artist Barbies on the Etrain. I see custom dolls on my doll club sites alot. Many of the doll collectors are Elliott fans. We also have off topic sections where we discuss things like AI and of course Elliott.
If any of you belong to some kind of collectors club or hobby board, with off topic discussions mention Elliott as much as you can!

I would never sing into a water bottle...that is just silly...a hair brush works much better!! When you are recording the water swishing around can ruin the take!!
Everyone here seems to have such varied and interesting hobbies and interests. I like to walk...i go out every morning and evening...it is great to clear my head and it also nourishes the soul. Also, it's great for the body..I've lost 70 lbs in the last year...I have aways to go...i want to lose at least another sixty...and then have my picture retaken with Elliott!!
I also love to read...I enjoy biographies, novels...pretty much anything except sci fi. I love film...especially foreign films and artsy fartsy type ones...Not really into the big blockbuster type Hollywood films. I really love old movies...you know the black and white ones that I have to bribe my nieces and nephews to watch.
My musical tastes are very eclectic...Elliott is definitely not typical of the music I listen to. i love world music and some new agey kinds of stuff. Most of the stuff i listen to is offbeat and we would not have much to track or write about if we were looking for it on the charts the way we do Elliott. Elliott is actually the only "popular artist' that I listen to. Some of my current favorites are Lorenna McKennitt, Bebel Gilberto, Ali Farka Toure, Ana Toroja, The Tiger Lillies....see I told you! You will be happy to know Elliott is outselling all of them!! I also love classic rock...one of my favorite bands of all times is Heart...I have seen them at least 15 times in concert. Love 60's music like Mamas and Papas, Jefferson Airplane, etc. Love 70's stuff, love disco, Big 80's stuff...I just love all types of music.
I also love to write...poems, short stories...my dream is to write for film and television...I am working on some stuff but don't tell anyone...shhhh! Elliott has inspired me to try and follow my dreams...and I am taking steps as we speak! So one day..when I win my Oscar...I will thank My family, friends, Elliott Yamin and of course Etrain station!!

Atlantis,
Chatty Cathy's sister, Charmin Chatty, has the sailor suit. She has glasses and records. You put the record in her side, pull the string and she talks, or at least she used too.... She is maybe almost two feet tall. The one that's over three feet tall and the size of maybe a three year old is Patti Playpal. She doesn't talk.
Mattel often makes Barbie and Ken sized character dolls. They made Elvis, M.C, Hammer, Vitamin C, Beyonce, Twiggy, Diahann Carole, Lucy, Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, the Olsen twins, and a bunch of others. If enough people call, e-mail or write and they had Elliott's legal permission, maybe they'd make an Elliott doll.

I thought he was a doll already??? :rotfl:
If there is an MC Hammer doll, then by all rights there should be an Elliott Yamin Doll!! Maybe they can make it like one of those Betsy Wetsy dolls except with sweat instead of ..perhaps they can use the nickname they used for Elliott after the New York show...Elliott Shvitzer...(after NY's Gov. Elliott Spitzer)! It would probably be BIG Seller around the holidays!
AvivaDove - June 14, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
Rick,
My son is only 4, so he likes the water bottle.
You are hysterical, so humorous and talented! Good luck with your writing. It's great that Elliott inspired you. I enjoy reading everything you write.
Congratulations on the weight loss. Walking is a wonderful thing. I walk many miles a day. I'm proof that it takes and keeps weight off. It is also great for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. My grandpop used to walk alot. He lived to be 107.
My musical tastes are eclectic too. I like classical. My first concert was The Phila Orchestra with the late Eugene Ormany conductiong. My father took me for my 12th birthday. I worked at a nursing home, so I enjoy the Lawrence Welk musicians. I have kids, so We listen to www.thestargirls.com . You should look them up. They're an Autralian kids' group., but they appeal to all ages. We love Bianca Ryan, the 12 year old girl who won the million dollars last year on America's Got Talent www.myspace.com/biancaryan We met her in person. She's very sweet and down to earth. I've always loved the Bee Gees, Lionel Richie, Cher, Barbra, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Yanni ,Enrico Macias, and my childhood crush, Bobby Sherman. How's that for eclectic?
AvivaDove - June 14, 2007 03:06 AM (GMT)
Rick,
You just keep cracking me up, ''Elliott Schvitzer'' doll! That's a riot. Seriously though, Mattel should make a Ken sized doll in Elliott likeness. The made a Vitamin C. I don't think that Vitamin C is as famous as Elliott. I think it's embarrassing that they made a Lindsay Lohan My Scene Barbie. She's not a role model for kids.
Mattel often donates portions of sales on certain dolls to charity. It would be really great if they made an Elliott doll and donated a portion of the profits to the Juvenillle Diabetes Foundation.

"I know I saw him last week at Pembroke Pines.
Taylor Hicks opened for him, he finally dyed his hair!!"
"I hear he's performing a tribute to Chris Daughtry."

You're too funny!
My grandpop liked Soul Train and Fiddler on the Roof.
I also like the Beatles, Monkees, Chicago, Mamas and Papas, anything Yiddish or Klezmer and anything disco.
SoulMusicRocks - June 14, 2007 11:33 PM (GMT)
I love music from past eras as well. 40's Jazz, Classic Standards, Psychedelic Rock, Italian Opera, Classic Rock, Blues, 70's Funk, old school R&B. I love them all! :)
Any music that has a good groove or moves me on a spiritual/intellectual/emotional level is incredible. I honestly think I should have been born in a completely different era because of what music I generally like and listen to lol.

I'm sure they are. I haven't looked into it, really, since I made those dolls. I put the Chicago dolls up for auction on eBay twice but got no bids (and I really didn't think I was asking for a lot, and it was fairly soon after the DVD came out, so I really don't understand what went wrong. Maybe people on eBay are more into the fantasy/bridal repaints. Of course, there's nothing that says I have to part with my work -- I just wasn't expecting to be a Barbie collector too! :P)

That actually sounds like it might be fun. It would be a challenge -- I haven't thought about doing any male repaints, much less a hair re-rooting, which I'm sure would need done -- but you may have given me an idea...
If I were to do an Elliott custom doll, what should I do? Should I do him in the album cover/photo shoot look, or try to do him in t-shirt-and-jeans-and-schvitzing performance mode? ;) Anyone?
AvivaDove - June 15, 2007 12:55 AM (GMT)
Grace,
Check out the custom doll competitions at the Barbie conventions on www.manbehindthedoll.com
If you look up Fashion Fever Kurt on ebay( the first one with brown hair and the brown leather jacket) , you'll see that he looks alot like Elliott. He has pretty blue eyes and slightly longer hair. I think if his hair were curled a little in ringlets, he wouldn't need re rooting. He'd just need the facial hair and he'd look like Elliott on the cd cover. He comes in jeans, a white turtle neck and brown leather jacket, maybe a t shirt could replace the turtle neck and jacket.
Schvitzing performance mode sounds good too.....

Wow...just found this thread. I love it! I wish I had something cool to contribute. My biggest love in life, other than my children, is music. I love almost all kinds. Classic Rock, Classical, Alternative, Jazz, Big Band, etc...
For me, it's what makes the workd go 'round. I was unable to take lessons of any kind when I was young so I feel like an unfulfilled, musician. Definitely a musicians heart. I tried to pass this on to my children and made sure they were able to take lessons. They all three play several instuments proficiently. I'm jealous!! lol
I love to read, also. I don't get the time to read like I would like to. I like biographies, autobiographies, novels, poetry, etc.....One of my favorite books of all times is, Angela's Ashes. Recommended reading!!
Right now, my hobby is Elliott Yamin and the etrain...choo choo......:)

Well I used to make all kinds of assorted crafts, and do a lot of sewing. Now for the last year, all my crafts seem to revolve around Elliott...Elliott buttons, E-train ornaments, Elliott shirts, Elliott tote bags, Elliott scrapbooks, Elliott shirts, etc., etc, etc!!
I also love to ski in the winter, and ride my bicycle in the spring and summer.
Even those activities though, have taken a back seat to Elliott. Lately, I would rather spend my free time on line at the E-train!

I like drawing and writing a lot (but drawing more, the first thing I did ever at school was draw a picture =] )
And the whole doll thing would be really cool, and it makes me feel less obsessive because a few months ago I was wondering if I could make plushies (which are like stuffed animals but people if you didn't know) and I made an Elliott one for me (though it looks nothing like him, but it's still cute ^^) and a Constantine Maroulis one for my friend =]
I'm working on a key chain of one of the characters from a comic book project I'm working on for a club on an art site I'm on.

I love reading about your hobbies here, so many interesting people on the E train. I have been a music lover for yrs, primarily alternative and r/b and soul music, adore Al Green, Percy Sledge, Stevie Wonder, and of course, Donny H.
Yr ago, I even sang occassional back up in a band along with my sister who was dating (and eventually married) the bass player. We did mostly covers,
originals, and worked for peanuts and of course, the music. Now I simply indulge my love for singing with an occassion role in a community theater production.
I adore opera and have attended many productions, we have a beautiful theater here in upstate New York near Cooperstown called the Glimmer Glass.
It is in a beautiful setting and is worth the trip for opera lovers. Also enjoy going to NYC when I can. Opera for me is all about soul and passion, which is another reason that I am so smitten with Elliott, who truly understands the joy that is found in singing
I am crazy about animals and have cats and a dog who keep me active along with my kids, my pets relax me and make me slow down sometimes which is a really good thing when my life gets too insane.
