Title: Roxy Show Thursday 6/14

Tenorguy - June 16, 2007 04:13 AM (GMT)
Hi there ETrain!

I don't have alot of time to describe in complete detail Elliott's concert here Thursday night in Los Angeles, because I'm leaving for a birthday weekend in Vegas tonight, so I'll sum it up for you....

At the famed Roxy club on the Sunset Strip Thursday night, Ellliott Yamin gave a Master Class in pure vocal performance excitement! In a word, Elliott was OUTSTANDING! Passionate, on fire, rocking, having fun, in control, whomping singing - for those of you lucky enough to have heard him live, you know what I mean.

This being LA, there just had to be VIPs in the room - that's right, several AI Alums where shouted out by E: who was there? Blake Lewis, Constantine, Chris Richardson, Brandon Rogers, Ace Young, Carla Rasmussen and probably others were there I could not see.

Elliott showed that group what an intimate concert should be - he really was on fire and in GREAT voice last night; I think I can say he surpassed himself and the crowd ate him up and did not want to let him go - by the time he finished Movin On the crowd was bumping....

Elliott and the band left the stage and the real shouts started and continued for what seemed 5 minutes until the stage assistant brought back his mic on stage and he walked on with his pianist to sing ASFY. That nailed it - the crowd quieted down and listened while Elliott let roll out one of his absolute best renditions of the great song...... he left everything on stage.

Can you imagine Blake and Chris listening to E and knowing just how short they were off the vocal mark? For me, it was a sweet confirmation that Elliott is the vocal star of the male alums of AI. Sweet indeed!

I guess there were about 300 in the corwd - the club is small but people were standing everywhere and there wasn't much room to move. I was surprised to see more people didn't know the raised finger salute for One Word, but I guess not too many people there have followed the clips on YouTube....

For whatever reason the Band and E didn't come out autographs, but I was ok with that.... I'd rather have the memory of Elliott singing his heart out in front of the crowd, that's where his gift shines brightest.

Joshua was there and lots of record industry people and of course that's important for Elliott - they witnessed that Elliott is not just a talented singer but a dynamic performer. I chatted with a mother and daughter and I found out they had not heard E live - they were BLOWN away after Alright and turned to me and said they had no idea how much personality and energy E had; it reminds me that some of Elliott's talent does not translate over TV.... you have to see him in person to get the full effect.

Josh dropped a hint last night that another tour is already in the planning stages and that the next round of venues is going to be larger and the list of cities longer. WhooWhee!

OK - that's all I can write.... I got a plane to catch. Just wanted you to know the man delivered BIG TIME!

Finally a recap from LA!! Thanks Tenorguy!! And, yes...you definitely kept it real by saying this:

great recap. I think the Roxy only holds 300-400, so he was probably near sellout.
Yes, hope the other Idols were taking notes.... this is how you sing, people.

AngELL - June 16, 2007 04:32 AM (GMT)
So grateful for this beautiful validation of Elliott--and everything we have been KNOWING about him for the past year and more!! When you've got it, you've GOT it!! Wow! Does he have it!

I'm beyond thrilled thinking about what Josh's comments might mean related to the second leg of the tour. Those guys sure do know how to put on a show that blows everyone's socks off, don't they?

planegirl - June 16, 2007 06:25 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the recap. Loved it. Does anyone know if there are videos on youtube from the Roxy yet?

TSPSoul - June 16, 2007 10:25 AM (GMT)
recap, recap... the roxy on thursday is so fuzzy.

let me start with a set list and then fill it in from there. I may be missing a song or two but bear with me.

we get things poppin and the party started right with ALRIGHT. this has single potential y'all. the live version of this really gets everyone going too.
slowing things down right away with FIND A WAY, it's a good time as any to include some real music all up in this
moving things along with one of my favs from the album TAKE MY BREATH AWAY, I'm tellin' you that is homage to r&b soul from back in the day
oh look out, let's pick it up with I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU FOREVER (it's the bonus track!)
a brief intro on how there's that ONE WORD to describe that relationship you're in
... now it's Stevie time. let's bring out Josh Hoge again and get a duet going with LIVING FOR THE CITY. Elliott misses a fist pound from Josh Hoge because he has his eyes closed and is singing. One or both of them botch the lyrics (not the first time apparently) but they have a good time with the song. they'll nail down those lyrics eventually. good vocals of course, lots of soul, very upbeat.
it doesn't matter anyway because we all know, and Elliott can say so himself, I'M THE MAN
let's do another Donny Hathaway classic, LITTLE GHETTO BOY.
here it comes.. ooooh... we're heading for a TRAIN WRECK. toward the end, E is scatting and intro-ing his band while the band is still jamming. this was an absolute treat. elliott was just flowin'
are we missing anything? yes we are... wait for it, wait for it... WAIT FOR YOU. one of the best renditions of this song: tempo, syncopated lyrical wordplay, delivery, the emotional connection— all perfect. he's just relaxed and singing.
back to the teaser, MOVIN' ON. this one is off the hook. he's finally settled into a groove with the live rendition of this song and doesn't overdo the harmonics. really finds the melody and let's go. "who's comin' with me??"
end show. no wait... we know it's coming... encore. throws out his towel. 4 teenie bopper girls in front of me grab the sweat rag and squee. lots of "we love you elliott!" from various sections of the audience now and even during various rests between songs prior to the encore. "I love you too, babe," is his response without missing a beat. he's given us everything we could ever want from a live performance but now he has A SONG FOR YOU. one of the most beautiful versions of this song because Elliott isn't singing Leon Russell, Donny Hathaway or David Foster. Elliott is singing Elliott's version and it's just beautiful. "and I'm singing this song.. to you." just him and a keyboard, stripped down to the bare essentials. no full band for this one even though they were jammin' all evening.

Elliott's vocals are soo good it's almost criminal. it was an amazing show, such a treat. if it weren't for his own licks on the songs and the live band, at times it felt like i was listening to a recording, that's how spot on his vocals were. and the energy and the way he interacts with the crowd really made everything enjoyable. loved seeing him relaxed, enjoying himself and just being himself.

his hair is still growing out, a lot. he didn't have a fedora, just a smaller indiana jones style hat. wearing a black longsleeve tee with a thin grey and black striped short sleeve which he layered and dark jeans (i think). he's got a full band with him, 2 are consistently backing him on vocals. that guitar player is amazing. the keyboard player also.

the Roxy is a pretty nice venue. it has its own unique vibe. they have their eye-catching logo and marquee out front: "KIIS FM presents ELLIOTT YAMIN with JOSH HOGE" (102.7 KIIS FM is the #1 radio station in Los Angeles.) Elliott tells the audience this show is like his second homecoming since he lives out here. he remembers to thank a bunch of people including his tour manager, manager and even jojo on the radio (from kiis fm) and the audience for requesting his song and getting it play. what's great about the ROXY is that their VIP area actually sits farther back than the general admission near the stage so the fans get the up close view. there's not a bad view in the house. the bar is out back. there's a separate private club upstairs. The Roxy is almost like the Viper Room but doesn't take itself as seriously. also, it's a lot better ventilated. the temperature managed to stay more or less cool even as people are bunched in.

elliott called out for the "idol alumni" in the house. i know for a fact Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson and Brandon Rogers were there. there were several others too, I just didnt personally see them. for the most part, they stayed in the VIP area so as to not interrupt the show.

anybody got questions?

GO see elliott live. it's an amazing, amazing show. it's another dimension and extension of his studio album.

$18 bucks GA. pretty packed house.

my favs:
Train Wreck
Movin' On
A Song For You

Thanks TSP Soul! Love your recap of the music! I especially love the way you say Elliott has made A Song for You completely his own by now.

Thanks for the recaps guys. I wonder if anyone got any video at this event.

Linda4Elliott - June 16, 2007 12:58 PM (GMT)
THANK YOU Tenorguy and TSPSoul for your beautiful recaps. Both of them are different and fantastic!!! Glad the other idols didn't take any focus away from Elliott and I'm glad they got a real lesson on how to sing! Can't wait for the rest of the tour. I hope they come back to the east coast somewhere reasonably close to me.....

Just spoke to Courtie, who saw both the SF and LA concerts, and she said she had the opportunity to see two facets of Elliott--in SF he was totally meshed with the fans, and in LA he was more of a 'performer'. Of course he was the consummate singer in both venues.

Courtie asked me to give a shout-out to Chloe, AtlantisKat and Benito, she can't wait to meet you in NY; Chloe, she'll call you soon.

She's having a great time!

georgiafan1 - June 16, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
Thank you both for the great recaps. Sounds like an amazing night. I'm happy that it all went so well for Elliott and for you all too.

arghhh!! I just wrote my take on LA, but somehow I lost it. so here we go again.

I was supposed to fly back to Denver from SF Thursday, but ended up going to LA with courtie. might as well be completely insane!! We took the scenic route from SF and it was just a magnificent drive until we got close to LA and hit the most horrendous traffic I've ever seen - I swear I won't complain about Denver's traffic ever again. The LA show had a different feel to it out of all the shows I've been to - maybe because of all the "VIPs" that were there. Elliott was perfect as usual - sounded great and ASFY was outstanding. don't know why he wore that long sleeved shirt since the place was so hot. It was a great crowd - they loved Mr. Elliott - definately all ages. There were lots of people in the VIP section - Blake, Chris R (hope he was paying attention to our boy singing and learned that nasal is not a singing style!!), Brandon. courtie was all excited when she saw Ace and was able to get a picture with him. I think Derek Bramble was there, but I didn't see him. Constantine was there - I don't really like him, but he was taller and better looking than he appears on tv (in case anyone cares). I talked to Aaron outside for a while - what a nice guy. if only I was younger - I would have been all over the kid. I had some tall guy in front of me so I didn't get great pictures - I'll post a few in the photo thread. We hung around outside to see if we'd see any more of Elliott - Jaime walked by a couple of times, but no Elliott. LA was very interesting - I've never been there before so it was an experience and Bev and I had a great time. It was really hard to say goodbye to her at the airport the next day.

sorry. my first post was much better - more detail - but I'm still trying to recuperate from this trip and I'm too tired to do it again.

Linda4Elliott - June 17, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
thanks Judy...I loved reading it. You're the first one who mentioned Derek Bramble...it makes sense that he was there. I'll bet he was proud of Elliott and their song :)

And Judy, that's it, you ARE the most obsessed fan :winneris:

So is there any pics or video out there of chris and blake in the crowd cause i am majorly in love with them and they are extremely nice and down to earth guys. I cant wait to meet them on tour, and i heard elliott really likes chris alot as well, which is probably why he was there.

Tks for passing the message on, Sherwood.
I met Chloe, Benito and Auntie Sherryl in NY yesterday and we had a GREAT time! Lots of laughs - thanks so much to all of you. I'll never forget it.
I also had the great privilege of speaking to Claudette, my other "Idol", on the phone. What a wonderful person she is!
As for LA - that's another experience I'll never forget. LA is like another planet...
Judy, I am so glad you came with me - it wouldn't have been nearly the same without you! Missing you already.
I met another couple of E-Trainers there - Sandy4elliott and Elliott!fan - I was so happy to meet you!

I was at the Roxy show that Thursday night! It was great..my daughter & I arrived early so we ate outside right nextdoor at the Rainbow and low and behold a curly haired hat goes running by and it was Elliott! My daughter says to me "mother got get him"! So i went looking for him..there was a tour bus on the corner so I kind of waited around minding my own business but no Elliott. I went back to the table and waited for him to come walking back our way and he did! I got up very calmly, walked over and started to talk to him...what a total sweeheart and gentleman! He talked for awhile, signed a CD insert I had and then my daughter took a great photo of me with him! I felt like such a groupee, I hate to even tell you my age, but it was great!
His singing is phenomenal...Josh Hoge jammed with him to Stevie Wonder's Livin in the City and I almost lost it!
Great show....gotta see him live if you can!

I was just dying the whole day, knowing that you guys were having such a great time, and I had to miss it. I told Donna that next time I'm going even if I have to bribe a neighbor to babysit.

My Grandson is doing better, thanks for asking. He has some bad scars on his arms and one bad one on his face. The da*n dog bit him about 5 times on the arms, once on the face and once on the back. He told me the other day that he wishes he was a dog because he would bite that dog that attacked him so he would know how it feels. Poor little guy. He brings it up every now and then. I don't push it, I just let him talk. He also told me that his favorite animal now is a cat. Imagine that!

Battling to get back to real life over here. Hope you're back into things, Judy.
LA really was an experience I'll never forget. We had such a great time!

Sorry you couldn't be there with us, planegirl. And sorry about your grandson. That's such a frightening experience to have gone through! My son was bitten on his face by a dog last year and I really freaked out about it. He only has one tiny scar left and strangely, isn't scared of dogs any more.

I loved seeing Elliott again, for the second time, and believe me - if I could have seen him 4 times, like Judy, I would gladly have done so. One of my new dreams is to go back to the States, rent a caravan and follow one of Elliott's next tours all over. Anyone joining me? (Not likely to come true - but I can always dream...)

Thanks for writing your take on LA, Judy. The drive down was fantastic! Loved being with you and Glenna on that trip. The scenery is beautiful!

Seeing Elliott up on that stage again was so good! He is such an amazing performer!

I was actually surprised to be excited about seeing Ace (since I wasn't a fan when he was on AI) but I was. He's a real sweetheart, like everyone says.

And meeting Aaron... ummm, well... I also wished I was about 20 years younger. He is gorgeous!

A couple of pics from The Roxy (most of my pics didn't come out so well - 'cos of all of the tall guys in front of us)

Love this one of Josh with the Elliott Yamin T-shirt
