Title: Tempe!!!!
JackieB - June 21, 2007 10:12 PM (GMT)
Wow! I know I was supposed to report back first thing this morning, but I’ve barely had a chance to get my thoughts straight about last night. Everything flies by so quickly it’s hard to remember what happened.
I got there at 5 and met up with my friend who decided she really wanted to go. The KISS FM booth guy, Alex, asked if the basket I was carrying was for Elliott. I said it was and he told my friend and I and a couple who had also won tickets to follow him. He led us in the side door (air conditioning!!) where Elliott and his band were doing their sound-check. It was so awesome to be in there to watch that while the entire place was empty! Elliott had just come from the Diamondbacks game and was in a tank and shorts and cap from the game. When he saw us walk in he shouted out, “Hey there” and waved to us. He is so enthusiastic and fun and genuine. I know he must be worn out, but he never shows it and just seems so thankful for his lot. What a good person he is. Alex led a couple more people back.
Anyway, when they had finished their sound-check it was Josh’s turn and Elliott came out to meet us. My heart was just pounding. As he approached our intimate group I felt like I’d known him this whole time; from the Boston auditions when I said to my husband, “This kid is going to win this whole thing,” through the hours of voting on idol, learning so many details about him as the weeks passed, growing to so adore that beautiful soul of his and the special relationship he shares with his Mom, crying my eyes out as he was sent home, to praying that he’d get picked up by a label, to the anticipation of this album release, to hoarding copies in an attempt to do what I could to help him grow his career, to requesting all over and back to voting again, constantly watching the numbers and the charts and feeling so a part of every success and goal he reaches – this and more gave me a (false?) sense of familiarity that led me to walk right up and hug him as he welcomed us. He said, “Oh wow- Hi Ya’ll” and hugged me back, but in hindsight I have to wonder if a move like that imposes on his space – yes, I felt as though I’ve known him this whole time, yet I forgot that he didn’t know me. But he is the epitome of grace and if I indeed did overstep by hugging him, he surely didn’t let me know that.
As we talked I told him, “During an interview once you said you missed your Mother’s home cooking – I’m sure it’s not going to be the same as your Mom’s, but I made you this,” and I handed him the basket. I said, “There’s a brisket for sandwiches, and a loaf of fresh rye. And some rugelah for dessert. Oh, and a banana bread for the morning.” I don’t think he could believe it. I’m sure he thought it was endearing yet a little mashuganah at the same time. Then he said, “I can’t believe this. Thank you so much.” Then he asked, “Are you a Jewish mother?” and I said, “Well, Elliott, you should eat a little something,” and he just cracked up. So he was looking at the stuff in the basket and I leaned in and whispered, “You know how you sweat like crazy on the stage?” He was smiling huge and laughed and nodded, and I said, “I got you a towel – it says, ‘Shivtz’ and he says, “Oh! Shvitz! That’s great!” I told him he wasn’t supposed to throw that one, and he said, “OK.” There was also a hat I bought him in there that says, “Shalom Ya’ll” but I don’t think he’d seen it yet. At one point he said, “This is unbelievable. Thank you!” I told him it was nothing, he gave me another little hug and we took a few pictures and he signed my CD jacket. When it was all over he thanked me again and said “G-d Bless you.” What an amazing person he is. He is actually surprised that people want to do these things for him. Are you kidding – with all the joy he brings he deserves so much more than a brisket!
When Elliott finally left Alex rounded us up and said he was afraid the Marquee people had to set up in there now, but they’d be letting us back in before long, so we went back out to the heat. In line we chatted and watched the line grow and visited with others standing near us. That was so much fun. Trish from the e-train came over and I got to chat with her for a little bit. I saw one of Elliott’s entourage (not band) guys was walking by and he said “Hi” because he recognized me from inside. I noticed earlier, inside, that he had 8 x 10s of Elliott, but I felt like it would be intrusive of me to ask if I could have one, since I’d already gotten such a dreamy and lengthy visit with Elliott. But now when he talked to me outside I asked him if it would be possible for me to have one. He said, “Oh, sure!” and as I was thanking him, Russell walked up and started talking to him. I said, “Oh my goodness! Hi Russell!” (Again, I said it as though I knew him- Poor guy - as if he had a clue who I was! But he was nice enough to answer as if he did) Russell asked me if I would like Elliott to sign that for me, and I told him “Yes, I’d die for that!” At first he said, “Come on”, like I should follow him, but then realized that may not be a good idea and said, “I’ll bring it back out for you.” That was totally fine, I didn’t want to make a bother of myself in any way. He brought it back out for me a little later and Elliott had signed it and wrote, “Dear Jackie, Thanks so much 4 the ‘Jewish Mother’ LOVE! God Bless!” I felt so lucky to have it so I ran and put it in the car. While in line Fox 10 news interviewed a few of us and before long it was time to in.
This is when I must have been suffering from sun stroke because all I could think of was getting something cold to drink. I had gotten there so early, I guess it never even dawned on me that the front would fill up so quickly. But one of the SUPER nice people I’d been talking to in line saved me a little spot right in the front row on the 50 yard line. I was directly in front of Elliott’s microphone.
A local kid came out and sang about 5 or 6 songs. He was pretty good. Then Josh. He is adorable, isn’t he! And funny. I like how he acts as though we all just tolerate him for the sake of Elliott. Like he’s the price we have to pay for the “real deal” – but in actuality, he’s got a really good voice and stage presence.
Many times before the show and during the first two acts, Elliott would quickly peek out from behind the curtain just a tiny bit, then hide. The girl next to me and I would wave and he’d wave back, then hide. It was actually like peek-a-boo. (heart-thumpingly adorable) I think he was checking on the crowd and how the theater was filling, but in my mind I’ll continue to think of it as peek-a-boo.
Finally, finally, FINALLY it was time. Elliott came out and everything is just a blur from this point on. He is just so flippin good I can’t believe it. After he sang “Alright” he asked, “Where’s my Jewish Mother at?” I was right in front of him and squealed, “right here, right here, right here, right here” and he said something was awesome, but I couldn’t hear what, and then said something about they rye bread being on point, and I don’t even know what else because my mind was spinning and I was sure I was going to THUD right over. The show was so fantastic. His voice just sends me, I swear! I think my favorite song last night was Train Wreck, (it’s been my favorite on the CD too) Something about him doing it live was just too much – his voice is just too beautiful for words. As he was talking about Wait For You, before he even mentioned the name, girls were squealing and yelling to him, “Elliott, I’ll Wait For You!!!” and thudding all over the place. When he came back out to do “A Song For You” I thought about what that DJ had asked, was he on my “list”? He’s on it. He is definitely on my list.
When the show was done my friend had to leave, but luckily we met there because she had to come right from work. I was going to leave too, because really, what was there left to say? Each time that I had the chance to say that he has a voice for the ages and the soul of an angel and that a man’s sexiness is defined by his character not his hair or veneers and that he was definitely the sexiest thing I’d ever seen, I’d forget all my words and say, “here’s a brisket. So what was the point of staying around? But I did. I couldn’t leave – not with the hope that he was going to come out. And he didn’t disappoint, out he came. I told him that I didn’t want to take any more of his time or attention because so many people still needed to meet him, but I said I just couldn’t leave without telling him how phenomenal he was and what a wonderful experience the night had been. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Thank you so much – G-d bless you” and I told him he was terrific and left. I put the top down in the car and cranked his CD as I was leaving and people in the lot were cheering at hearing his voice again. It was just the most amazing night. I will never forget how fortunate I was to meet that genuine, humble, uber-talented man.

what a great recap!! That is so cool he gave you a shout out during the show. And I can so picture him doing the peekaboo from behind the curtain, he is so cute
can't wait for the pics. thanks for the great recap!
Rick1965 - June 21, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
That is definitely one of the coolest recaps EVER!!
And I think it was the brisket that made it!!
Jewish Mother Love Rules!!
Mazel Tov!!
It reminds me that during AI...my best friend's mother who lives in Pembroke Pines in Florida (yes all the social security checks under one roof!) was absolutely ga-ga for Elliott and had all the the other Jewish grandmothers voting every Tuesday night for Elliott...She set up a phone bank in the Mah Jong room and posted signs that said 'A VOTE FOR ELLIOTT IS A VOTE FOR JUDAISM!!!'

Wow, THAT was great =), I found myself smiling from ear to ear as I was reading... lol. So glad that you got to spend that much time with him =)
lindagt - June 21, 2007 10:27 PM (GMT)
Wow Jackie - what a great, great recap. I'm sure you made his night as much as he made yours!!
wowhesgood - June 21, 2007 10:27 PM (GMT)
OMG, JackieB, you did awesome!! I'll bet he and his band loved and truly appreciated the meal you fixed for them. That was so thoughtful! I'd love to say I'm jealous I didn't think of doing that (well, I am sort of, lol) but since I was speechless when I saw him I'd have probably just dropped it in his hands and stood there. LOL
What an awesome night for you! I'm really glad you won the meet & greet tickets.
You are so right about how we know so much about him and feel we "know" him yet we are all strangers to him. When I saw Russell I too called him by name and he was like, how do you know my name. I told him I'd watched and listened to so many of their radio tour recordings and podcasts and he just smiled that cute smile of his.
wowhesgood - June 21, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
Jackie-Also, was it a full house? How about the crowd, were they loud, etc....
AngELL - June 21, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
WowowowowowowowowowowWOW!!!!!!That was so exciting!!!!
OMG!! Loved that you played Jewish Mother--how adorable and he really ate it up! You knew just what he needed!! Agree with everything you said at the end too--he is so sexy and so good and sweet! Can't stand it!!!
It's like...where has he been all our lives? NOBODY like him!!!Woo-hoo!

Jackie. your recap is wonderful! What a thoughtful and kind person you are to bring that basket of goodies for Elliott. I'm sure that touched him to no end. I look forward to your pictures too! :grouphug: :rocker:

One of the girls we were talking to in line said there were only 7 tickets left when she bought hers a couple days ago. The rumor in line was that the show was sold out. Last week I picked up my original tickets that I bought on line the day they went on sale. At that time the Marquee girl told me the capicity was 1500 and they were 2/3rds gone. On the other hand, it didn't seem even close to full on the inside. I mean, it was full, but not crowded or smushy. Also, being right up against the stage it was hard to see more than a few rows back to see how crowded it actually was back there.
Also, that guy who gave me the 8 x 10 said it wasn't going to be totally full, so I really can't give you a clear answer.

OMIGOD!!!!!!Jackie, That was great! I can't stop smiling! Ya know, after all this time, you hit the nail right on the head, when you talked about how you felt like you've known him all this time. That's it! That's what has eluded me all this time, I feel the exact same thing. From the first time I ever met him a year ago, and I never realized it, but you are right, I feel like I have known him forever!!.
What a special special night you had! So happy for you.

What a PERFECT recap! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the "Jewish momma love", that was such a perfect idea! You are one smart momma! And you expressed EXACTLY how I feel about E, as though I have known him forever & the man has no clue who I am. Funny how that works isnt it? lol

Ha - actually it's kind of sad. I knew just what he needed all right, and it had nothing to do with a brisket. Back in the day I would have chased that . . . and probably got it. Twenty years ago I was a force to be reckoned with! :eyebrows:

Oh my gosh- is that what you heard? Good! Because when the Fox 10 news lady interviewed me she asked, "Do you think he'll eat it?" I thought she was crazy and said, "Who wouldn't eat a homemade brisket?" But then today I friend of mine said she wouldn't eat something a stranger brought. (I keep forgetting I'm a stranger! )

Jackie,
I loved your story and your pictures. Look at how happy he is! That was so very thoughtful and considerate. I bet Elliott and the band will never forget you.
Would you please post the recipe in the recipe section? I'm a vegetarian. I've cooked meat for my husband, but never a brisket.

Jackie,
The recipes section is under off topic discussions, everything else.
I'd love a cheese blintze recipe. My grand aunt used to make them. I made them about 30 years ago. She passed away in 1991. I can't find the recipe. I enjoy cooking and baking. My kids do too. They fight over the chef hat.

Yes! If Tucson would have been after Tempe, as in the original schedule, I know I would have gone. After last night I considered getting on a plane to go see him wind up in Anaheim tonight.
He was going to Disney today. They're having a big party after the show tonight, renting several rooms one of the guys told me.

Jackie, I'm jealous of you...you know that don't you. I barely had a few seconds with Elliott..and I was in heaven. What I'd give to have had as much time with Elliott as you did. I loved your story though, and how nice that you did all of that for Elliott.
ETA...I thought about flying to Anaheim too. I told my husband..who would have ever thought that I was meant to be a groupie. I wish I knew this years ago. :) I guess we can be the YAYA sisters.. and follow Elliott around the country.

I guarantee ya that Elliott ate that pup right up, "stranger" or not, after meeting you, I am sure he didn't see you as someone who might slip a date rape drug, or poison into the meat, I mean look how sweet and absolutely stunning you are!! I just love the etrain and how wonderful, kind, genuine, and down to earth everyone here is. It really brightens my day to hear your story, see those pics, and two huge smiles, that just light up the sky;) Congratulations sweetie, and did you remember to pack some napkins??? LOLLLLLLLL;)

Hey you two! Not the YaYa sisters! What is the name of that movie with Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon . . . they were groupies when they were young, slept with Jim Morrison, ALL the Stones, etc. Susan straightens up and marries a politician (?) but Goldie continues on with her "groupieness" and they loose contact for years??? Well, whatever that movie is, I wanna be Goldie.
