Title: John From Cincinnati
Description: Crazy HBO series

LOVE IT!!!
Rolled up on a crazy wave into one of my top favorite shows!
It's got mystical, rhythmic, crazy dialogue.
It's got great surfing and skating clips.
Definitely got the cool factor in spades.
Got a boat's load of crazy characters with complicated lives and a load of real world "issues".
Stays away from black and white portrayals with alot of shades and shadiness happening.
Got just the right amount of confusion as to what is really going on.
Might have God or one of God's reps.
Got some clairvoyant birds.
Probably no one from Cincinnati in sight on a show called 'John from Cincinnati' - Yes!
Anyone else seen it and care to comment?

Season finale was brilliant! I'm really glad I stuck it out & stayed with the show..i was close to giving up but it's turned into a genius series. The writers & director should get Emmys.

I keep trying to resist this because I am having a hard time liking or relating to any of the characters, but every time I put it on, I'm drawn in. The problem is, I've missed a few and am a little confused. Also, now that my daughter is back in school, we're all going to bed a little earlier and I keep falling asleep before it's over. If they replay them, I'll try again, because it's fascinating in a "look at that car wreck" sort of way.

Well, I for one, can be counted as one of the many JFC big-time supporters. I've been on countless movie and review boards throwing in my perspective. Reminding folks that JFC is not your normal TV show. Milch is trying to examine the terrain of Godliness and miracles and transformation without the sugar or sugar substitutes. I find it incredibly exciting! And this world will not be logical or linear or even fully understandable. If you're willing to let go of all that and surrender to the experience, it's incredibly revealing. Much buried there that requires multitple and nondistracted viewings.
Also, when they say "The Internet is Big", you can take that very literally as there are multiple sites that are part and parcel of the JFC world. Like:
Stinkweed's faux site (the company sponsoring Shaun):
http://stinkweedusa.comThe John Monad site (where you can enter words for answers, or not):
http://www.johnmonad.comThe HBO JFC site (loaded with info, check out Inside the Episode):
http://www.hbo.com/johnfromcincinnatiAnd there's some videos on YouTube that include a Shaun promotion video, interviews and clips.
If anyone wants to discuss, I'm ready.

that's so true. I've gone over a few of the episodes 'On Demand' & it helped me to fully appreciate it.
Thanks for the links to the other sites. I'll check them out.

It had been 50-50 that it would be renewed. I heard that one of David Milch's big supporters at HBO had run into some personal/legal problems and there was a good chance this could affect the show's future.
The show clearly was out in front in challenging viewers to stretch to meet what was happening on their screens. I so applaud Milch for giving us this show. It takes a courageous and determined person to continue to create their visions regardless of what the status quo is up to.
I do get discouraged when I notice how many people get so vehement about staying inside the box of our current understanding. But as Milch recently said, if he can't do this show, he'll find another vehicle to explore similiar concepts as its really the same story, with different characters. I just was loving getting to know these particular characters.

Some interesting recent quotes from the man, David Milch:
Milch had long wanted to explore the genesis of faith, which he tried to do with his previous HBO series, Deadwood. However, rather than use the cross, one of the most ancient symbols of God, the series presented gold as the reorganizing force of a society.
“[John from Cincinnati] is a show in which I tried… to come back to the original idea,” Milch told Smiley.
Milch, who believes that the artist is “God's surrogate,” chose to have ordinary characters go through a profound experience of faith in order to make it easier for viewers to understand the complexity of the show's overall message.
“The idea [behind John from Cincinnati is] that the universe is a solid system but [also] a series of waves,” Milch explained. “And that man is not an individual creature, but that his essence is carried from seeming individual to seeming individual [and becomes] available to surfers if they aren't loaded and selfish or if they don't become addicted to the behavior of surfing itself. Doesn't often happen.”
Amidst the profundity of his creative process, Milch said that he ultimately decided to focus on a surfing community because it was suggested to him.
“The suggestion was made to me, why don't you do a show about surfers? Young, masculine, that's the demographic. Can you do that and have it engage your own spirit? John From Cincinnati [was the result].”
Despite the great pains Milch took in making the series more relatable, it failed to secure a significant viewer count since its June premiere. Nevertheless, the show's cancellation will not stop Milch from creating more stories that have a similar thematic content as John from Cincinnati.
"If God is anywhere, he's everywhere… I said to a priest, as he was dying, ‘I'm grateful to have lived long enough to be able to say to you that the shadow in which I always believed I and my characters must move is cast by God's sheltering hand.' So any story can let you do that,” he said.
