Title: What If?
Description: Elliott had chosen "rock/pop"

lindagt - July 4, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Listening to the State Fair concert cd the past few days has made me think. Lucky Chris Daughtry - Elliott did not choose "rock/pop" as opposed to "r&b/pop" as his prefered genre. Elliott just kills on a rock song - he could have really given Daughtry a run for his money. I'm glad things turned out the way they did - both are talented and have carved out a place for themselves in today's music. But darn - I hope Elliott records some rock songs some day :-)

There is such thing as soul/rock. Man, when I first heard E, he reminded me so much of Steve Winwood, who is a rock/blue-eyed soul singer too. Why do you think I want him to cover "Higher Love" one day....hey, why not bring in Melinda to duet with him. That would be ah-mazing!

Plus his voice is more interesting to listen to than Chris's IMHO

I'm not really into rock, the hard stuff or the rock-lite (Daughtry). Elliott is indeed versatile and even though his element is soul/R&B, I think he could kill a rock song because he does have that soul. If I'm not mistaken, rock and roll is a derivative of blues and we all know Elliott can do the blues! LOL

Is the State Fair concert you reference posted anywhere here or can you share this? It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

I can't believe you wrote that! I drive to and from the train station every day and we have only a tape deck in the car, and I have an obscure Steve Winwood tape that I really like four or five songs on. His style is so Elliott it's incredible, but I'm always trying to plug in Elliott's voice.

I've been sayin' since day one that E's voice would be awesome for rock too with the right style. Hope he does some soul rock in the future.

Oh my, I think he'd be fabulous w/ rock/pop. Every rock/pop song he's song has been killer. Savin' Me w/ Chris, Somebody to Love, Ready for Love, Empty Arms, Whipping Post, Use Me (ok, some are more soul/bluesy but w/ a rock feel).

In fact, to me, Elliott sounds a lot like Paul Rogers, the great lead singer from Bad Company (who's considered one of the best rock vocalists ever by some). Listen to some of the YouTube videos of Bad Co. (especially the third song below).

I'd love to see pop/rock from Elliott in the future but I'll be happy w/ whatever he sings.

This has the makings of a really fun "fantasy playlist" thread, I think...

Of course, Elliott's style is closest to the bluesiest rock singers; but the thing that really tickles me is thinking of songs that would have slotted E in the rock category instead of the R&B bag had he performed them on Idol. Ones that he would have killed just as totally as ASFY or MMFL.

"With a Little Help From My Friends" (slow Woodstock version) - Joe Cocker
"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" - Elvin Bishop Band
"Miracles" - Jefferson Starship
"Lyin' Eyes" - Eagles
"Colour My World" - Chicago
"All Right Now" - Free (Paul Rodgers on original lead, right?)
"Jump" - Van Halen

...an' ya know that!

I'm of the age that I think "classic rock", not so much the current "rock" genre - and I can't think of a single act that wouldn't have benefited from Elliott as the lead singer, can you? It would be hard for me to pick a fantasy playlist - cause I like him on them all. His is the kind of voice that is so very enduring - like listening to Elton John at the Princess Diana concert a couple of weeks ago. Elton John's voice still knocks you out - just like 30 plus years ago - no matter what genre. Elliott has that same something special.

I'm looking forward to great collaborations with major artists in every genre!

I can't wait to hear what music Elliott records in the future. He can probably bridge the soulful sound with all genres: rock, pop, blues, jazz, and so on. I would like to hear his take on all of those genres with original material. We saw his versatility on AI and the 1st CD has some varying sounds too. It should be really incredible to see his musicality become more complex while going through the different genres.

lindaqt, Elton was the last of a great tradition and he knew it in the seventies...I remember reading about Elton asking over Marc Bolan of T. Rex to his home just to sing songs together because Elton, even to this day is a music enthusiast and listens to new records, and it was just pathetic to compare Elton's big and developed voice to Bolan's thin little peep.

I have a feeling if Elton had been guest mentor in season five, he would have picked Elliott the same way he picked J Hud...remember, he said, if I had a label I would sign her today.

That said, let's not forget that the great Rod Stewart's comment on E was "(whew) the pipes on that boy." Or something like that. Love to hear them sing together someday.

Especially: "Have I Told You Lately," "So Far Away," "Handbags and Gladrags," "Maggie May."

So there's another fantasy playlist.

Also: Elliott's hard R&B version of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful."

Wow - I'd never even thought about Elliott covering Rod Stewart, but the thought of him doing Maggie May gives me chills. That record was one I played over, and over, and over.

Thinking about Elton John reminds me of a conversation I had with someone when I was just a kid - shortly after he started breaking out to top 40 radio. I remember complaining that he was going "too commercial" and although I don't remember the words - the person I was with chastised me for being a snob about my music and only thinking unknown artists were worthy or cool. That lesson stuck with me my entire life and made it much easier when Elliott's CD had such a great commercial feel. An artist of that caliber needs to be commercial enough that everyone gets to experience them - it would be selfish to have it any other way. Over time Elton has done acoustic, huge productions, movie soundtracks, just about everything - and he's always mesmerizing.

Linda - I TOTALLY agree with you and have thought many times that if Elliott had gone more rock/pop, Chris D might have replaced his big DAUGHTRY tatoo with a YAMIN one. Elliott could pull that genre off and I'd love for him to put out some songs like that. It would be hot, Hot, HOT!

I'd do backflips if Elliott ever recorded the full version of Somebody to Love. I LOVED that. Yes, I'd do backflips. I'd end up in a body cast but I'd do backflips.

Seriously? I thought I was the only one! Their vocal styles remind me so much of each other! Heck, I'm listening to Higher Love right now, it's one of my fave songs ever :awe: Or maybe E could cover some of his stuff with the Spencer Davis Group. (come on E, sing "Gimme Some Lovin'", it would please the female fans :rotfl: :rotfl: )
