Title: A Funny Thing Happened....
Description: On my way to the store!!

Rick1965 - July 28, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
I was on my way to the store this afternoon...walking down the street...minding my own business...singing Jimmy Crack Corn like I normally do...when a car full of neighborhood kids pulls up and who should be blaring from the car speakers??? Why Elliott Yamin of course...but it wasn't Wait for You...no... it was ALRIGHT!! Now as far as I know it's not being played on the radio...so that meant they had to have downloaded it or had the cd. I was so excited...I must have looked like one of the people who suddenly walks into a spider web!!

And these were no sweater tied around their necks, malt shop, pep club kind of kids....these were the homeboy, yo, yo, yo...what up dawg, pimp my ride, foshizzle rough neck variety.

So I gave them my best yo dawg, two thumps to the chest, peace out sign as I crossed the street...and they looked staight at me...and proceeded to roll up the windows! I was so proud!

This wins best post of the year.......no, of eternity.

That's pretty cool. Elliott's music reaches all age groups.

ETA: I like the title of the thread. The title reminds me of A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. A comedy about tragedy in the Roman times.

Ouch, that would be slightly painful....Yeah, that was not cool what they did. You have a great sense of humor. Last Comic Standing needs more talent, you should audition!

Actually I used to run with a gang when I was younger...we weren't a tough gang or anything...we were called the Lemon Slushies.

That's why I prefer sit-down comedy. It's so much better for the more lazy crowd, you know?

I remember them saying you should picture your audience in their underwear while giving a speech or acting. They say it's supposed to help with "nerves". I'm sorry, but that always gave me more stage fright and caused the line "wait till we get our hanes on you" to run through my mind. That didn't help while doing improv or public speaking.

A SIT DOWN COMEDY CLUB!! Now there's an idea!! Maybe Elliott would invest!

I think my idea is not my idea anymore LOL

Have you done stand-up before? I've acted and done public speaking through school, but never stand-up. I'm afraid that the audience might have stocked up on tomatoes.

I have never tried stand up nor would I ever!! I am not a performer...I can write funny sometimes but the thought of getting up and performing for an audience terrifies me.

I would have to stick to scripts or plays or maybe I can get a job writing one liners.

Sweetie, Elliott sang in the dark before Idol - can you imagine that? Don't let fear get in the way - remember the lyrics to Free - "Now that Fear Is Out Of The Way"

That is totally cool. Actors and Speakers need brilliant writers to help them with their material and vice versa. It's definitely symbiotic.

Imagine if there were no talented writers who brought their creative visions into the written word. Imagine if their were no actors with the courage nor emotional range to play the writers characters. It would be an artistic problem, for sure.

I used to be scared of speaking in front of audiences too. Then my friend got me to try Improv Comedy and Debate. Well, from then on you couldn't get me to keep quiet haha.

That was partly why I relate to Elliott. He has grown in confidence and self-reliance as a recording artist. He conqured a lot to get to where he is and that is one of the themes of life we all go through: overcoming personal obstacles. You're a talented writer! You should try a Poetry Reading at a Coffee House. I never would've thought I liked to sing, act, or speaking in front of an audience had I not attempted.

My main message is, no matter what time/age/state we are in, we can always attempt new things that help us grow on different levels. Elliott is definitely a great representative of that.
