Title: What Were You Doing 30 Years Ago?
JackieB - August 16, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
Before Elliott, the only person I was a lunatic over was Elvis. Do you remember where you were 30 years ago today when you heard that he died?
I know, most of you probably weren't even born yet . . . .
I was playing badminton in the back yard with my neighbor. Her dad came around the corner and said, "Elvis died today girls" and for some reason, we didn't believe him! Then later when we went in the house it was on all the news stations. I was devastated and broken hearted beyond belief! I cried for days listening to his music and have stayed up all night watching the movies and specials every anniversary and birthday since. They used to do them all week on the networks, now you find them on some obscure cable channel at 3am. I have all my Moms original old LPs and a slew of magazines that came out the week he died.
My favorite thing to catch on cable now is the '68 come back special in all that black leather and sexy smile.

Interesting topic, Jackie. 30 years ago I was just getting ready to enter my senior year of college. Funny but I don't even remember what I thought when I heard the news. I was never much of an Elvis fan, sorry. I'll have to ask my younger sis-- she was more of an Elvis fan than I. I do, however, remember what I was doing when John Lennon was killed. That had more of an impact on me.
Oh yeah and when JFK was asssassinated I was only a little girl, but I remember that day clear as a bell. There was lots of weeping going on from all the adults around me- parents and teachers alike.

I was 13 and not a particularly big Elvis fan...we were playing out in front of our house and my Aunt Carol came out on the porch visibly shaken telling us Elvis had died. She was a big fan and I remember feeling bad for her. I also remember saving the newspapers with the headlines for years until they got all old and yellow.

The little boy next door had borrowed a few of my Elvis 8-tracks, (yes, I said 8-tracks) and had broken one just a day or two before and so the news was doubly tragic for me! I was going to beat him up . . . once i stopped crying.

Hmmmmmm, 30 years ago I was learning how to pee & poo in the potty. I am happy to report that I was very successfull in that endeavor! :)
I would like to add that my hubby is a HUGE Elvis fan (he was 5 thirty yrs ago) & he remembers seeing the news about Elvis' death on tv. He collects almost anything Elvis...his latest conquest is the Limited Edition Collectors Set of Elvis PEZ Dispensers.

I had just graduated from the 8th grade. My sister was going into the 7th grade. I was with my mother and sister in the school gym at a party, welcoming new 7th graders. I clearly remember eating an ambrosia dessert when it was announced. Parents were crying.
I love that 1968 comeback special too. Both Mattel and Hasbro made Ken sized collector dolls in his likeness in that black outfit. They're on ebay in the doll section, possibly under the Elvis collectibles section too. The prices are cheap in the doll section. Those dolls look exactly like Elvis, posed like him, with a guitar.

I was in our sweet Audi station wagon with my mom, wondering what I wanted for my seventh birthday coming up, when we heard the news on the radio. Not being an Elvis fan in my short life, I didn't really have any feelings about it. I did like to call him Elvis Parsley, though.

I was only 2 years old when Elvis died. So I obviously don't remember that too well...

Thirty years ago I was one year out of college and working retail - for some reason I really don't remember getting the news at all. I loved early Elvis, but felt sorry for the later Elvis and so I don't remember being surprised at all about his death.

I was married to my first husband, my son was six year old, and I working for the Navy Department. If memory serves me (and that's saying a lot), I think I was on my way home from work when I heard the news.
ChattyB, I also remember the date JFK was assassinated. I was in the 6th grade and I came home from school to find my Mom sitting in the living room crying. I also remember the day Jim Croce was killed. I woke up to my radio alarm to hear him singing and then they said he had been killed in a plane crash.

I was waiting tables and getting ready for my jr yr of high school. I was not a big Elvis fan and didn't like how he'd taken to drugs and alcohol such. His late lifestyle and look was not good, to say the least. It was sad though because he did influence music so.
I have to say after Elvis night I liked and appreciated him much, much more.
Funny Elvis story. When I left a job w/ the State judicial dept they knew I wasn't a big Elvis fan so on of the public defenders did an impersonation of him for me and sang me a song and my staff presented me with a velvet Elvis painting. LOL

I was doing nothing because I didn't exist yet lol.
But my parents were 13 then ^^;;

Well, I was about a month away from being born. My mom had a dr's appt that day. She was/is a huge Elvis fan, so she was stunned and heartbroken. It's so sad. I wasn't even alive to experience any of it. My parents have Elvis records, vhs tapes, books, and even a few 8 track tapes of Elvis (in addition to cds). I like to watch the videos with my mom sometimes. He was amazing. His voice was so beautiful, and he was such a magnetic being. My parents were lucky enough to see him in concert once. I'm so thankful that they had that opportunity, especially my mom. He was her idol. :)
When AI5 had Elvis week, I remember looking through some of my mom's Elvis stuff, and when I came across "If I Can Dream," on my mom's vhs tape of the '68 comeback special, I bawled my eyes out. It was probably the first time I saw it, or at least the first time I paid any attention to it. It is one of the most moving performances that I've ever seen. I also knew it would be the perfect song for Elliott to sing that week.
Did anyone else buy the "In the Ghetto" Elvis & Lisa Marie duet from iTunes? It's very moving.

It made me cry - I loved it.

I was only 5 so i couldn't possibly remember that far back... ;)
Ok, Ok...I was at my Aunty Jills house ( I believe it was during summer break) & heard it announced on the radio. It was the first time I had heard of anyone famous dying & felt sad for the rest of the day. I was into Abba during that time I think so it didn't affect me too much.
I did watch the PBS special on him the other night though & there'll never be another performer like him...he is the King.
My fave performance: Suspicious Minds live in Hawaii..that cute grin when he sings "I'll never, never lie to you...no, not much". The way the song builds & he does his signature hip thrust, the way he kisses the girl in the audience.
"I hope this suit don't tear up baby.." :rotfl:

Elliottcrazy, being much, much older than you, I remember actually watching that on TV when I was little. It was a huge deal because it was broadcast via satellite and I guess that was uncommon. That has been one of my favorite performances of his, too. I still have that LP that came out afterwards and I remember being so enthralled with the way the album jacket folded out and had so many pictures included. If I remember correctly, it also came with a photo book tucked inside. Thanks for posting the youtube, I can't watch that video without a huge evil smile!
brwneydgirl, I think it's great that you have that fondness for Elvis from your Mom even though he had died before you were born, and that your Mom told you about that day - very cool.

I was 21 years old and excited about life. Wish I was 21 again and knew then what I know now. lol

Thank you. My mom and I are very close. She's my best friend, actually. I take her to concerts...she hadn't been to a concert since she had seen Elvis in concert, until I started taking her to see some of my/our favorite singers. I enjoy hearing about historical events and things like that from the past, and since my mom loved Elvis and his music, it was that much more special to me. I have a special place in my heart for him, even though I wasn't alive for him, because he was her person she idolized, loved, etc, and I can totally relate...but at the same time, I can only imagine (because of how insanely huge he and his career were.) I always wonder what would have happened in his career, had he lived. Just imagine. :(

I was five years old. The only thing I knew about Elvis was my mom was nuts about him.

I'm a little late on this thread, but I do remember when I first heard that Elvis died. I was 11 years old and at a neighbor's birthday party, about to get in the pool. Her mother came outside to tell us. They were big country fans and listened to his later stuff all the time. Not knowing what killed him, I imagined it was his weight and felt really bad for him. Since my parents weren't really into his style of music, I didn't grow up listening to him. However, I was immediately reminded of when I was about 8 years old and I spent the night with a friend. We had fallen asleep on her mother's bed and she had an Elvis 8-track playing on repeat the whole night. I couldn't wait for her mom to get home to turn it off and send us to bed. We didn't see her mom until the morning (I don't think she came home that night). Anyway, I didn't want to hear an Elvis song for a long time after that. It's a strange memory...
I think Elvis started out a sweet boy with a wonderful voice. It is really sad that he went all HOLLYWOOD and came to a crashing halt in the end. :(

I totally blanked out any reaction or memory of Elvis' death, and I don't know why. I know where I was and what I was doing when JFK died, when John Lennon died, and when Princess Di died.
