Elliott Yamin, best known for his stint on American Idol, is a formidable singer and has a newly released album to show for it. Yamin was born in L.A. and moved to Richmond, VA when he was 10 years old. He started singing in his early childhood where he embraced the genres of R&B and soul. Although he had not been musically trained, he sang in a local jazz band and in amateur performance forums, emulating Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.
This self-proclaimed “southern boy” has battled Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 16, and is 90% deaf in his right ear. These challenges didn’t stop him from reaching his dreams. While on American Idol Simon Cowell stated that he thought Yamin was, “potentially the best male vocalist ever on American Idol.” Yamin was eliminated from American Idol after the tightest race in the history of the show at that time.
In December of 2006, he announced a music publishing contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Sony invested in him as a partner as part of a 50/50 deal. The achievement represented by Eilliot Yamin, the album, is all the more significant because the singer co-wrote the lion’s share of its songs. Elliott Yamin’s first album, Elliott Yamin debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart selling 96,000 copies in its first week. It had the highest-ever debut for an independent artist in the history of Billboard magazine.
