I asked a Dj at a HOT AC station to play Wait For You. The spins recorded on mediabase was 8 spins for that week.
His response to me in an e-mail I received was Elliott was sliding down the charts so I retired the song. I hope this is not a trend with the DJs.
Elliott's song Wait For You has had a spin decrease on the HOT AC format because a few stations who were playing Elliott with large numbers of spins came down with spin decrease fast. The adding stations did not keep up with the decreasing spins. We have to request those HOT AC stations and get those spins up for the life of Wait For You to continue on HOT AC..
Mainstream stations are adding many stations which is the good news but I think HOT AC requests have to go out to keep Wait For You alive and healthy.

If someone wants to "retire" WFY they'll figure out a reason, this was just his.
BTW: Your analysis is absolutely correct. And we've gotten two HAC adds recently. But when a station spins a song 80= times and the following week cuts that in half, it really messes up the numbers.
That's why I am leary of a station that plays any song relentllessly without build-up.

I have even thought of sabotage believe it or not.
That would certainly get that bullit removed..
Why they would stop so abruptly playing a song with such build up is not the usual.. As you said, it generally takes the stations a few spins a week to climb to its peak spins.
Sometimes a station is late playing and brings up the spins quickly but keeps the spins going for a while.
In my dealings with some Dj's and some other requesters I know, we have run into all kinds of Dj responses who love Elliott and ones that still have Elliott in competition with Daughtry. That is the one thing that is still hanging around. And the polls are still happening.. there is room for all of them.. Most of the songs they play incessantly on TOP 40 and frankly the only one artist I never tire of is Elliott.
I know if we can turn around that airplay on HOT AC into the positive Elliott can get back some steam and climb again.. then we will have more time to work on ONE WORD..
