Title: Elliott Rocked Toronto
Description: I think I'm still recovering...
naberh - November 20, 2007 05:35 AM (GMT)
Hi all, I just posted my recap at Flipside, so will post it here. BTW it was great to meet some of the other members of the e-train tonight..
Ok, just got back and Elliott ROCKED Toronto! I'm still a bit in shock. And yes BES, the toque did make an appearance, but I'll get into that in a bit. I'm afraid I don't have any stories of meeting Elliott, but then again, I didn't make any attempts to do so, I just wanted to hear him live.
I don't quite know where to start. The doors were going to open at 6pm, I got there at 4:30 in a bit of a panic. I had purchased 2 tickets for me and my friend, but when I checked for them in my bag, I only had one! I must have left one at home, or lost it somehow. I figured I could probably buy another ticket at the venue but wasn't sure. Anyway, when I got to the venue, there was Josh Hoge standing there. I ended up telling him my story of woe regarding the lost ticket. He was very nice and said he'd go check and see if I could get another ticket. He came back and told me I could buy another one at 6pm, phew!!
Anyway, I lined up at around 5, there were a bunch of 16 year girls already there. And shortly after I got there, Elliott dashed out the door in the TOQUE (I felt like yelling at him, "Elliott, it's really not that cold!" cause it wasn't..) with cigarette in hand with a couple of band members and Sway. The 16 year olds immediately started screaming, and Elliott waved to us, and dashed into a restaurant nearby. Sometime later he came out of the restaurant, and dashed across the street, and all the 16 year olds immediately started screaming at the top of their lungs: "there's Elliott!", I kind of felt sorry for E at that point and could understand if there are times he doesn't approach his fans (and is everyone getting the picture that 16 is NOT my favourite age...)
Anyway, they let us in right at 6. About the opening acts, I quite liked Josh, especially when he gets real bluesy, I wish he could have played longer. As for the Last Goodnight, didn't care for them at all, just not my thing.
And then Elliott came out. It's hard to put into words. Its weird cause I"ve been reading over the months all these reviews of Elliott's concerts, and everyone raves about him, but I always wondered if the raves were great simply because its his fans reporting on his concerts. But after tonight, I can safely say that no, he really is THAT GOOD! BTW I went with three other people, a woman friend and two men. The woman and one of the men are fans of E, but not to the extent I am, and the second guy isn't really a fan of Elliott's, I think he just went for his partner's sake. But at the end of the concert all three were raving about Elliott. In fact the two guys said they had recently seen three concerts at the MOD Club (two of them were Paolo Nutini and James Morrison) and that Elliott smoked all of them! They seemed so happy they had come, it was great. Also, the guy who wasn't a fan of Elliott's told me that during Elliott's encore of SFU a woman next to him declared: "I'm going to cry!", and when he heard that, he said he started chocking up as well! (awww). In fact my friend seemed to think everyone around them was chocking up at that point!
And the crowd the crowd the crowd, where do I get started. First of all, I was terrified that it was going to be a small crowd, cause I have no idea how popular Elliott is in Toronto, and I know Elliott's cd didn't do nearly as well in Canada as in the States, I think the highest it got on the charts was 84. But the place was packed! I'm guessing between 4 and 500. During SFU, Elliott sang "with about 400 people watching" so maybe that was the number of tickets sold? I don't know. Anyway, the crowd also was so diverse, all ages, lots of guys, racial groups, and I saw kids as well as old people.
And the crowd gave him such a warm reception, lots of cheering, screams and 'I love you Elliott'. Everyone just seemed so into him. The first two rows seemed to be packed with those 16 year old girls, so lots of squeals from there, and attempts to grab Elliott. And between the end of the set and the encore, people were cheering for several minutes straight, and at one point all starting yelling "Elliott, Elliott", it was quite something to witness.
And I have to talk about Elliott's stage presence, it's REALLY improved since I last saw him perform live which was at the AI concert. He's really charismatic, seems so confident and has such amazing energy, and I loved his chatter between songs. But what I love most, is that he really excudes an amazing warmth. He gave shout-outs to lots of people, incluiding the two opening acts, asking people to give them a hand, he also gave shout-outs to the familes of some of the band members, who were in the audience, and talked about the family of one band member (I think the base player) who had welcomed him into their home the night before, and how wonderful they were. He also gave a shout-out to someone (a guy, I can't remember who..) and said he was in love with him! Oh, and he even gave a shout-out to the crew of the Mod Club and thanked them all
And he got everyone singing, not only during Wait for You, but also One Word, and there were lot of fingers pointed in the air for that song!
Oh, and he said he loved Canadian audiences, and said if it were up to him, he would play for a canadian audience every nigh of the week, which we all loved to hear!
I'm so glad the audience gave him such a great reception, Toronto audiences can be somewhat cold at times.
Anyway, don't know what else to say, I"m still all buzzed. I took quite a few pictures, and will put some of them up tommorow. The pics I took of him are ok, but not as good as some we've seen. But I did take lots of pics of the crowd, it was so large, and was excuding such great energy, I just got a kick out of taking everyone's pic, so will post some for them as well.
I really hope some of the concert footage tonight ends up on Youtube, cause he sounded so amazing, but I think its a definite possiblity, as I saw tons of people filming him with their cameras
Oh yeah, one last thing, there is going to be something on one of the news stations about the concert, as they were outside the venue, and told me so, so I"m taping it now. I won't be able to post it though as i don't have the technology
.
Anyway, its past midnight, I may have to pack it in, though its going to be hard to sleep!
(yikes, reading this over again, I realize I went a bit crazy with the exclamation marks, but I guess that just is an indication of my frame of mind right now...)

naberh, Thank you so much for your wonderful recap. Your impressions of the evening truly transported me up there to Toronto. All exclamation marks certainly welcome here! Sounds like the crowd was terrific and I think it's so cool that you took pics of your fellow concert goers. Can't wait to see them!

Fantastic recap, naberh! Sounds like an awesome concert experience for you, the audience and Elliott. I'm so happy to hear Toronto showed him the love. He is unbelievable in concert so I bet they are glad they went and the rest of the city will be kicking themselves for not going. Really, he is good enough to be entertaining thousands, not hundreds. Cool about the screaming 16 yr olds.

Great recap! Thanks so much.

I just love reading people's recaps of their experiences at his shows. Thank you so much for posting it! I'm so happy you had such a fabulous time.

Loved reading your recap. Elliott is really amazing live and I'm always thrilled to hear other people enjoying that experience. I loved hearing about your friends' reactions, especially how much better Elliott was than Paolo Nutini and James Morrison. I really like Paolo Nutini but his voice pales in comparison to Elliott's. Thanks for sharing your night w/ us!

Great recap! See, I like exclamation points, too.....and ellipses, for that matter as well. LOL
Elliott has a way of converting luke-warm and non-fans. My husband attend the first concert with me as a show of "support" but left a fan. It is the passion for the music that Elliott and his band exude won my husband over.

Naberh....thanks for posting your experience with us. I've been particularly looking forward to the Canada re-caps ( being Britsh an' all..& I know it shouldn't matter but it does somehow).
But at the end of the concert all three were raving about Elliott. In fact the two guys said they had recently seen three concerts at the MOD Club (two of them were Paolo Nutini and James Morrison) and that Elliott smoked all of them!
Praise indeed!!
But what I love most, is that he really excudes an amazing warmth.
..it's almost palpable isn't it??
And shortly after I got there, Elliott dashed out the door in the TOQUE (I felt like yelling at him, "Elliott, it's really not that cold!" cause it wasn't..)
LOL..I saw the pic in the other thread..how cute was that?? I'm guessing all the layers were more preventative. I know he's been fighting a nagging cold.
I'm really glad he had a good turn out too..it's important because I'm sure it's a good indicator of how he'd be recieved in Europe( or the UK at least).
WHEN are they going to release WFY????

Thanks for the recap! I look forward to hearing everyones stories! Cant wait for the pics!

Very high praise indeed being compared to and preferred over those two guys. I actually have seen both of them live. Neither voice is better than Elliott but I do have to say I love me some James Morrison. Saw him this summer. He opened for John Mayer for most of the summer but headlined the show I saw in Boston.
He brought the house down with this one.

Welcome, xo_sarah! So did you scream during the concert then? What did you think about it?

I lost my voice a few times screaming actually .. but there were girls that were louder than me . But I loved the concert .. Elliott was amaazing . The only downside was that my picture with Josh .. came out all blurry and dark .. =( I tried fixing it in Photoshop but ... theres nothing I can really do .
I took a lot of pictures of Elliott though ! I was center stage .. I`m working on my story right now =D

Ok, I believe you! I guess those 16 year olds that were screaming, screamed loud enough for all of us! I swear when they were screaming 'there's Elliott' after he came out of the restaurant the whole block could hear them!
Thanks everyone for your very nice comments on my recap. I asked my friend who went to the concert with me, if she had anything to add to my recap. This is what she had to say:

Hey your recap was really good! I think you encapsulated the lovey-dovey "vibe" of the evening very well with respect to E. Can't think of a lot to add to your very detailed report, but I do have a couple of other small observations for what they're worth:
- I like E's headband, although it seems that I'm the only one if his fanboards are anything to go by! Makes him look like a cute little tennis player from the 1970s moonlighting as a singer in between sets at Wimbledon - he touched the hand of one little blonde teenie in the front row of the audience and she sort of crumpled as if someone had snuck up behind her and removed all the cartilage from her knees! - I agree about the enthusiasm of the crowd; I've gone to concerts here (in Toronto) and performers practically have to do handsprings or sacrifice a virgin onstage to get any sort of rise out of the audience. Nice to see that E didn't have to resort to such extreme measures :-D |
I'll try and post some pics tonight.
naberh - November 20, 2007 11:21 PM (GMT)
oh yeah one other observation. Outside the concert venue there was this 'record store on wheels' parked outside blasting Elliott's cd for all the public to hear. Before the show started I was talking to the guy who was working the vehicle, and while we were talking, this middle aged man interrupted us, and asked who was singing, the guy answered 'Elliott Yamin' and the man looked puzzled, asked how it was spelled, and then said something to the effect of: "he's really good, isn't he?" and then walked away.
Just another nice little moment.

What a beautiful recap. It is me, or do the recaps just get better and better? So thrilled for you hon and the time that you had, and that Toronto gave E such a warm welcome!! :)

Great recap Naomi!I met you briefly at the table,I
was there with Rainy,Lynn and Michala.Let's just say I'm not 16
but I might as well have been that night.I was one of them at the front
screaming! The whole experience for me was as Elliott would say"surreal"!
I'm still trying to come back down to earth. The place was packed and it was full of love for E!We'll be waiting for him to come back!Josh was AWESOME!!!!
TLGN wasn't really my cup of tea either but anyway they weren't bad.
I was lucky enough to meet Elliott a couple of hours before the doors opened
and I was literally shaking before I seen him.I was almost speechless when he
came up to us,he gave me a hug and all I could manage to say was"you're
awesome, you're the best and I can't wait to hear you sing"I also asked him
how he was feeling and he said"a little tired but pretty good otherwise"My heart was in my stomach and I completely forgot to ask for an autograph!
It happened so fast,it was like a dream, but I will never forget it!The cutest thing was when I first spotted him walk in the door he was dancing around like a
little kid,he's precious!I actually had tears just before he came on
stage,I have waited so long and I just couldn't believe it was actually happening!I also met Siba and her husband, standing right next to me,and they
were so sweet, even if her husband couldn't understand English, adorable!
Elliott blew me away, for real! The best dream of my life!Elliott, please come back soon!!!!!!! :1word: :thud:
