Title: Guy Sebastian
Description: Brilliant Aussie Singer Memphis Soul
SoulAngel - December 1, 2007 01:01 PM (GMT)
Hi guys,
I thought I'd start this topic to introduce you to the music of Australian singer/songwriter
Guy Sebastian, who some of you might know, won the inaugral Australian Idol in 2003.
Guy has been very successful in Australia and has four top 5 albums out, (the first 3 are R&B/Soul/Pop), but for anyone interested in gritty, funky and beautiful soul classics, Guy has just released his AWESOME fourth album that debuted at #3 on the Australian (Aria) Chart.
It is a brilliant tribute album of soul songs that Guy recorded in Memphis with the legendary soul musicians
Booker T & The Mgs, who wrote such songs as
In The Midnight Hour, Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and played with the likes of
Otis Redding, Elvis, Al Green etc. :D
Guy Sebastian has one of the best soul voices I've ever heard and he's been Australia's best kept secret for the last 4 years but he really is a world class talent.
Check out 30sec listen from all tracks from

Whoa, I must admit, he is really very good! I think I could definately be a new fan. I love his voice and he sings with alot of soul. Is he a nice person, do you know? We all love our Elliott because not only is he a great singer , but like his momma says," the talent is a given, but he is a "good soul". Will Guy ever come to the states?

I have never met Guy but from what I've seen in interviews, he seems like he has a 'beautiful soul'.
He is a christian and world vision ambassador so he has a good heart. :awe:
In the 4 years since his music has been out in Australia, he doesn't seem to have let fame change him one bit.
Not sure if Guy will release his music in the US but I urge you to check it out anyway.
I hope you do become a fan.
These 2 review were in an Australian Newspaper and a fan posted it on Guy Sebastian's forum. There are many more, there is quite a buzz down under.

I remember him! Didn't he have a song called Angel? I like him!! :)
SoulMusicRocks - December 11, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
He sang a show stopping rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" on Australian Idol. I was in awe at how he infused an R&B sound with the power ballad style of a theatrical song like that.

Yeah his 'Idol Winner's Song' was
Angels Brought Me Here.
It went straight to #1 and was the highest selling song in Australian History, selling 4X PLATINUM.
He sang it on American Idol too.
You can see it on YouTube here but Guy has progressed soooo much more over the years.

Hi purpledelightz,
That's fair enough.
Guy has moved musically from Idol now though, as with Elliott so it really is all about the music now, not the show.
Yeah
Just As I Am was Guy's first album. His second was
Beautiful Life, his third was
Closer To The Sun and his latest, as I said is
The Memphis Album.
All have sold PLATINUM or Multi PLATINUM in Australia. :goodjob:
I could post links to endless brilliant performances on YouTube but here is
Steve Cropper of legendary soul band
Booker T & The MGs and
The Blues Brother's band talking about working with Guy.

That's great!
The girl singing 'Lets Stay Together' with Guy is Sarah Ryan. She is an Australian Olympic swimmer and she and Guy were on a celebrity duet singing show called 'It Takes Two', Guy was her mentor.
They came second.
The 'Fernando' video was an appearance Guy did on a TV special called 'Abbamania'. As the title suggests it was a tribute to Abba.
The Xmas one is from 'Carols by Candlelight' I think and 'Taller Stronger Better' is the video clip from the first track off his third album 'Closer To The Sun'.
Guy performed in front of 300 million people the other night on 'Asian Idol'.
He did a Soul Medley and I found this 'Angels Brought Me Here' duet with the Indonesian Idol Mike Mohede on YouTube too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJRysOHF8scThis is also a video of very soulful one of Guy's songs from his 3rd album.
Guy writes most of his own songs but this was written by 'Seal'.

The soul of Guy SebastianThere are some things you just don't mess with. Memphis soul music from the 60's and 70's is one of them. There was a certain set of conditions, personalities, and influences that came together to make something perfect that can never be replicated. Sure, you can try to cover a classic song from the period and pay homage to artists who shaped the development of music in the United States. But to put together a complete album? You better have eaten all of your Wheaties.
A young Australian singer, Guy Sebastian, has taken on that Herculean task with his fourth album, The Memphis Album. I know what you're thinking: A whole album of covers? Can't he write some material of his own? How can you improve upon or even equal music of such historic weight? Well, to start, to help him with the task are several men who were instrumental in originating the sound when it first got cut on vinyl, including Donald "Duck" Dunn and Steve Cropper (who I recently mentioned here), two original members of Booker T. and the MG's (and of the Blues Brothers' band). Steve was not only a member of the monumentally important house band of Stax Records, but was also clutch in producing much of the music that other groups put out under the Stax name. Consequently, he also was responsible for producing Guy's album. That says a lot about Guy's artistic prowess when the original musicians come along for the ride.
All of the songs on the album are ones that you're familiar with if you've listened to any soul music from the period. They've got the signature Stax organ sound behind them, the tight horn section making themselves heard, with a new voice in front, one that's noticeably different from the originals. Although his vocals are of a different tone, it's clear that Guy has taken much of his style from the period's artists, and he does a very fine job of filling some very large shoes. I'm not going to lie to you, there are a couple of interpretations that don't quite stack up to their predecessors, but as a whole, the album really is a wonderful tribute to some classic music.
It very much reminds me of Marc Broussard's album from earlier this year, S.O.S.: Save Our Soul, albeit with much more well known songs and a somewhat updated feel to it (whereas Broussard feels closer to the original). Right now it's only available as an import from Australia, but hopefully it will get a release here in the States. While you're waiting for it, enjoy the following:
Guy Sebastian - Knock On Wood (Eddie Floyd cover) : The Memphis Album
Eddie Floyd - Knock On Wood : The Complete Stax/Volt Singles: 1959-1968 (Disc 6)
Buddy Guy - Knock On Wood (Eddie Floyd cover) : Vanguard Visionaries
Guy Sebastian - Respect Yourself (The Staple Singers cover) : The Memphis Album
The Staple Singers - Respect Yourself : The Best Of The Staple Singers
Marc Broussard - Respect Yourself (The Staple Singers cover) : S.O.S.: Save Our Soul

Purpledelightz, this might interest you in particular.
Guy posted a message to his fans on his forum on January 10th. Here is his message...
Hi guys just wanted to wish you all a super happy new year I hope the entry into 08 has been a smooth and painless transition and that for those of you who went back to work/school/normal life i hope it wasn't too hard to get into the swing of things.
So im sure most of you know that i got engaged on the 26th and since then i have seen a bunch of congrats messages etc so i wanted to say a huge thanks. Your support means a lot to me.
So i got back into the swing of things here in QLD where i have been writing with David Ryan Harris for the last week or so. It has been a great time in which we have written a great bunch of songs only to add to the songs we wrote in LA earlier in 07. I can tell you that never before have i had a collection of such fun, uptempo, original tunes. I cant wait for you all to hear it. Its really soulful but super catchy. There are some titles like "Good Old Days", "Coming Home", "Crazy, Clumsy, Crazy" and "Never hold You Down" just to name a few, are some of my favourite songs i've ever written. David is an amazing writer and also an incredibly humble, sweet human being and im honoured to work with him.
Anyway, much love to you all and here's to a fun and fruitful year (visual cheers)

purpledelightz - January 18, 2008 02:13 PM (GMT)
Thank you, Thank you for posting, SoulAngel.
I'm interested in everything about Guy B)
I found this message...
Hi everyone hope you are all enjoying your Easter and that most of you got a chance to recouperate from the year thus far.
I am writing in regards to a thankyou letter that i wrote in response to the letters i have received over the last few years. These letters came in many forms ie emails, physical letters, cards, gifts etc etc. All the return addresses and email addresses were kept in a database and all letters read... trust me this took a LONG time!
I thought i would write a letter and email it to all who provided email addresses. I had asked Jules to set up an official email as a favour for me. She inadvertently wrote her name in instead of "Guy Sebastian Fan Club" and so people received emails from sender "Julie Egan" and thought she was running the fan club!
Just letting you all know that Jules does NOT run the fan club and that letters and emails written are received and read by ME. It was just a one off favour. I know a lot of people were upset by this from the many emails i recevied, if you werent offended then please ignore this message, but i am sorry if this caused some concern. The mistake has been corrected.
Anyway i am having an awesome Easter break. Ive got right into stradegy board games, i know it sounds nerdy but i have been having hours of fun! Theres also this really cool set of new rules for uno, its called "killer uno", alright i am a geek! Amongst that, surfing and riding my motorbike, it has been an awesome few days. I have already started to write a bunch of songs and i cant wait to start a new record! Anyway time for bed..
Love to you all,
Guy
:awe: :awe: :awe: Guy, I think you are an incredibly humble and sweet human being!
Thanks again SoulAngel...Oh Good night...butterfly
