Daughtry, Carrie rack up Billboard honors
Billboard, the venerable music trade magazine, just issued its 2007 awards. Being sales, airplay or revenue-based as they are, the awards would be expected to recognize some of the more successful Idols, and so they do.

Especially Daughtry, who racks up a closetful of awards. In the top artists lists, based on a combination of sales and airplay success, he comes in fourth for the year, behind only Akon, Fergie and Justin Timberlake. And, as an added Idol bonus, Carrie is fifth, ahead of Beyonce, Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, T-Pain and Gwen Stefani.

Daughtry's self-titled album is the best seller of the year (basically a November to November proposition). It sold 3.2 million in that timespan. Carrie's Some Hearts comes in fifth here with 2.3 million. Daughtry's victory in the album category also enables him to win the top Billboard 200 artist award, going to the most successful artist on the album chart. Carrie, aided by the addition of Carnival Ride sales, comes in No. 2, giving Idols a neat little monopoly at the top of the list.

Carrie's Before He Cheats is No. 6 on the sales-and-airplay combining Billboard Hot 100 song list for the year, and she's No. 7 on the Hot 100 artists list, taking into account all her singles. Daughtry is one notch ahead of her there.

Finally, Daughtry tops the new artist of 2007 roster, a list that also includes, at No. 9, Elliott. More info can be found at billboard.com and billboard.biz.

I guess Clive Davis is smiling all the way to the bank at his decision about signing Daughtry.
