Entertainment Tonight showed a few clips from the AI7 auditions. One guy was singing Wait for You (badly). I wonder if it will be a popular choice this year.

Sorry, no idea. It was so quick, I wasn't really paying attention until I heard "if it takes the rest of my life" and I looked up to just catch the end of the segment.

I remember he once said that he would never stop the contestants from using his songs. I am sure they got the required permission from him.

Remember the Kelly Clarkson thing when she was not going to let the contestants use her songs and then she backed down?

They couldn't show the video clip without permission. Many times they don't show the auditions because they don't have rights to the song. So Elliott or Stargate or Hickory gave the okay.

I hope somebody here gets a clip because watching those auditions is painful.

Actually I distinctly remember Elliott talking about this a while back. That if AI ever wanted to use any of his songs, it would be just fine with him. He said he would never tell him they couldn't use his music. I think it"s very cool.

Actually was thinking about this on the way into work, my carpooler and I were talking about it. I don't think permission is needed during the audition process only when performed on the show (i.e., Top 24 etc.). Either way, Elliott would definately give it and feel most honored and proud.

I guess people are afraid that nobody will buy or air their lesser known songs if somebody hears them sung badly on AI (or they're feeling the sting of being an Idol and just want to be Idol Gets Back, which I think is what Kelly may have been feeling when she put on her ban.)

But in fact contestants most likely won't pick the lesser known songs. They'll only pick ones that you're already known for singing and singing well -- and then you'll look not only generous (and make some bucks for somebody on your team) but look like an even better singer by comparison. Elliott knows what he's doing, as usual.

I believe permission is technically not needed during the original audition process.. However, if they are going to show the song being sung on television, then they need permission.

I have heard of several people who auditioned, and once they got to the filmed part of the audition they were "encouraged" to change their song choice because AI would not be able to show their audition on television if they sang a song AI did not have permission to use.

So if there was a clip of someone singing WFY, then Elliott gave permission (I believe).

off topic:

did everyone notice that AI removed all visual reference of Taylor Hicks from the show? He was mentioned (Simon rolled his eyes), but Taylor did not appear in the opening montage (all other past Idols were present), nor is his poster behind the contestants (only the 4 female Idols are displayed).

Just another nail in the coffin; AI's disowning of Mr. Hicks complete. Truly, they did not want him to win.

that seems harsh. Unless there is more than meets the eye, he should have his place among the winners.

His picture was on the wall OG... one of the contestants that was his backup singer pointed to it. It was on our far right.
