oh no, not the fair haired child.......
rooney - January 18, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
I read somewhere that he said it was taken out of context. They didn't report the whole conversation.
harleywoman - January 18, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
Yikes. Looks like he maybe not only pissed off AI but Rolling Stone as well. Lord, I'm sure the people that tried out last year and made the show and the ones that are trying out this year are going OUCH!
Actually, I have friends that would rather watch the people that suck during the auditions than the rest of the show. They only watch the auditions and stop when the show gets to the Top 24. LOL

in the article posted, they post the whole transcript word for painful word.(He doesn't seem to use complete sentences. ;) )
Judy - January 18, 2008 05:04 PM (GMT)
Since I am not nearly as nice as Elliott, I can't help but enjoy this controversy, not because of Chris but because of the way American Idol has dissed so many others in favor of Chris, you know. (you have to read the Rolling Stone transcript to get the 'you know' lol)
wowhesgood - January 18, 2008 05:05 PM (GMT)
I can't say I don't agree with what Chris says. He does credit AI for getting him the recognition he needed to make a career but the show, imo, is losing credibility and they do need to make some changes.
georgiafan1 - January 18, 2008 05:08 PM (GMT)
If Chris had not made the claim that he was misquoted or that parts were taken out of context, it probably would have blown over by now.
After he made that claim Rolling Stone posted the audio of the interview and posted a transcript of the interview. Some things that Chris said that they left out of the original article made him sound even worse once we could hear and read what he said. Most of the time it's better to just be quiet after you screw up.
I was going to count the times he said "you know" but I realized that I was not that interested, you know.

sometimes it's better to keep our mouths shut (even if we are / were right) imo.

LOL, we're of the same mind. You know!
A side note, I bet a lot of people didn't know Chris tried out for Rockstar:INXS but didn't make it. Then again, maybe they did.

The reporter from R/S was as irritating to me as Chris' "you knows." "Right"....."yeah"....I mean that was pitiful journalism.
Oh, and here's R/S's assessment of Elliott's career to date:

I guess at R/S going Gold is considered modest sales?
Amazing how they are so up-to-date on Kat, Taylor and Ruben being dropped, but they don't have the time to verify Elliott's sales. Hmmm.....R/S in decline?
luvthatelliott - January 18, 2008 07:48 PM (GMT)
I'm not a fan of Rolling Stone either. I just thought the little Chris controversy might be an interesting diversion while we wait for word from the REAL America Idol! :)

I'm glad you posted. I didn't think that Chris was really that far off the mark in his comments about AI.
But it does seem like this is the first "controversy" Chris has encountered since the incredible success of his first CD.

For some reason, I just read this as Chris saying that AI should feature more talent and less Gong Show, so that the talented contestants who make it on the show are taken more seriously by the music industry when they finally get their chance.

I'll admit to being overly sensitive when it comes to criticism of Elliott, but I really think Elliott's was the most unfair career summary of anyone written about in this article. Elliott was widely recognized in many publications on his being such a big seller for an indie so this kinda steams me. Oh well, we know we have a winner in Elliott.

Same here Judy,
That's why I posted the link. I think it is indicative of the publication's bias, and why we have seen nothing about Elliott in R/S....not even a review of his CD.
I feel like they're still in a wait and see mode with Elliott and his music career.
But being Indie should endear him to them, not the opposite. Oh well.

My thoughts exactly Sk8! I'm sure it will blow over if it hasn't already. Even if his cd had sold 3 mill like Chris, I'd bet my meager savings account that Elliott would never say something like that. I'm so glad to be an Elliott fan.

seriousLY!!!!
Why can't more people use adverbs correctly? That drives me up a wall.
This is the first time that I have read any interview with Chris and he sounds, you know, dim. They should do an interview where Kat asks Chris questions and vice versa. I would pay money for that:
Kat: So, like, what, like, do you think of, like, the new season?
Chris: I, you know, think people, you know, aren't taken, you know, serious.
Kat: Like I know what you, like, mean.
Chris: I'm glad they, you know, took us serious.
Kat: Like, yah.

Chris; and I'm like, you know, totally stoked, that . like they're letting ,you know, like all these "former pro's", you know , like audition to the max.
Kat; oh well, so you can like gag me with a spoon. I mean, I had to get where I got all on my own,you know, like it was tough.I mean like, some weeks, they were really like mean to me, you know

I hate to say that I do have to agree with him. I think the show is in decline. He was already a singer but the show gave him the exposure he needed. I do hope that he won't forget that.
realitymom - January 24, 2008 10:10 PM (GMT)
Ummm, I just read the transcript & to be quite honest, over half of what Chris was attempting to say made absolutely NO sense to me. It reads as though he is talking in circles. :dunno:
I DO agree with him about the 2 weeks (or 3) of bad auditions. It IS boring after the first few horrible auditions. I dunno how Paula, Randy & Simon are able to sit through all of it. I fast foward through most of the auditions & don't watch AI completely until Hollywood week. Chris seemed really cool in his audition & Hollywood week. Once the contest got underway, he seemed to become more arrogant. The more eyeliner he put on, the bigger his ego seemed to grow. Tattooing Daughtry on his own back?! Good grief. To be fair tho, I really don't follow Chris, so perhaps it was just the way he was perceived on the show.

B) Nice.
wowhesgood - January 28, 2008 08:40 PM (GMT)
While I agree the show may be losing credibility there is an obvious reason why I'm not a Daughtry fan.
VirginiaNana - January 28, 2008 09:40 PM (GMT)
Seems as if feels the need to diss the show to feel better about himself for trying out. I'm sure there are lots of talented people still out there, and they want a chance to be heard, just as he did. He seems unbelievably arrogant to me. I won't be buying any of his music just because I don't like the guy.
mominny - January 28, 2008 10:41 PM (GMT)
Well that was irritating......what exactly did he say or what was his point? Idol needs more of him?
Also you know, I was thinking, you know, that someone, you know, needs to help him with his interviewing skills, you know? Also, he will be forever associated with AI whether he likes it or not. You know? The nervous laugh in the middle is also irritating.
I once lost the opportunity for promotion--years ago--cause I said you know 42 times in a 20 minute interview. I was pretty embarrased they counted!!!
He needs to have an outstanding sophmore album before he is considered a superstar.
Also I agree there are thousands who would like his opportunity.
Taratova - January 28, 2008 11:06 PM (GMT)
Chris knew what the format of the show was like when he used it as a vehicle to get recognition.. he proved he can sell cd's , now he just has to realize that American Idol has always been what it is since the first season it has aired.
Nothing different at all.. one thing this year... Simon is saying he likes people.. last year he went overboard with bad comments that upset many and the show had to do damage control. The Bushbaby comment went over as a very bad comment and people said it was down right cruel and hurtful. So Simon is coming off a nicer guy this season.

I guess if you look at numbers, at least between season 5 and 6, you could say that Idol is on the decline indeed.
But I don't see how Chris claims that his comments were taken out of context because, reading through his entire interview, it does seem that his comments were taken in the correct context. At least to me, that's how it seemed.
I also don't agree with Chris' thoughts on the first two to three weeks of bad auditions make people take it less seriously. He and a lot of other people may not necessarily like it, and indeed some of the bad auditions seem a bit forced, but it does make for a lot of entertainment. And by putting in a mix of bad and good auditions, the show tends to highlight the great auditions a lot more. It's like, the great auditions remind you of what it takes to be the next American Idol.
And again, the bad auditions last for 3 weeks. I know some people who skip this entire part and just start watching during Hollywood, and sometimes during the actual competition.

And I know people, who do just the opposite, watch the bad auditions and not the rest of it. I heard complaints on my radio station that they weren't bad enough this year.
So it appears that the format has something for everybody. :)
