So much for that singing career. After winning last year's Best Supporting Actress Oscar, Jennifer Hudson began working with legendary music producer Clive Davis on her much anticipated debut album. Almost a year later, there is still no release date for the record. Hudson can't be panicking, though, because her unexpected movie career is moving along quite nicely.
Already part of an ensemble cast featuring Forest Whitaker, Kate Beckinsale and Guy Pearce in the completed drama "Winged Creatures," Hudson spent a good deal of the fall filming the high-profile part of Carrie Bradshaw's assistant in "Sex and the City: The Movie." More importantly, she plays a prominent role in another new film, Fox Searchlight's adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd's novel "The Secret Life of Bees." Currently in production, the end-of-year prestige picture also stars Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, Paul Bettany and Alicia Keys.
Now, once "Bees" is finished, Hudson will segue into Tyler Perry's latest drama, "The Family That Preys Together" for Lionsgate. This appears to be another "dream" come true for Hudson, who, when asked about Perry, told Variety in September 2006 that she "thinks he's a genius" and "maybe we could do a movie together."
According to the trade paper, Perry's latest melodrama focuses on two families that come from different sides of the tracks, but "become intimately involved in love and business." The prolific hit-maker has already recruited Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Sanaa Lathan ("A Raisin in the Sun") and Rockmond Dunbar ("Prison Break") for the picture that will begin shooting March 2 in Atlanta. Besides the inclusion of two former Oscar winners (Hudson and Bates), "Preys" will also be the first Perry movie to have a story line that prominently features white characters.
As for Hudson's fans, they may have to wait a bit longer for her album, but at least they know they'll find plenty of J-Hud in theaters over the next year.
Congratulations to J-Hud!
I'm really excited for Jennifer.
And, I'm looking forward to "Bees" and the other movie after it.
But, I keep thinking of her role in Sex and the City, and she seemed miscast. I didn't really buy her character all that much.
Still, she is riding a wave of mojo that I hope will ensure many more movie roles to come.
