Title: Variety Article On Music Biz
Description: feature E's deal

This was in the news thread but it's quite a fascinating article about the end of "the majors." What album do they feature to make their point? Elliott Yamin, of course. Variety is the premier entertainment newspaper so this is great PR.

I got the article from the treasure trove provided here by Nanassetta. I just wanted to give it its own thread. Very interesting article about the demise of the majors.
Yup, Elliott's album has sold 600K according to the article.

Thanks for fixing the title and Nanassetta for the amazing work she does finding this stuff.

Great find.

Am I nuts, or is the listed author of this article Adam Sandler? That can't be the same guy, right? (What a weird moonlighting gig, if so.)

PoorMe - February 8, 2008 09:19 PM (GMT)
He's listed as 'former Variety music editor' and has articles dating back to July.

What a great article! Elliott made such a smart deal, and I love it when the media calls attention to that.

It's weird that this just turned up, because I just wrote a paper for a writing class at URI on this exact topic. I used Elliott as one of my examples to show that major labels are declining and artists do not necessarily need them to achieve mainstream success anymore.

Great article! And very informative! Elliott really did have a great deal. Imagine the profit he must be making.:D

Yes, but you also have to imagine what he is spending that would normally be picked up by the label. I keep running numbers through my head and his expenses about make my eyes spin.

I think most artists on major labels make all their $ touring. I think Elliott is not rolling in the $ but is def making money from his album. I think ringtones brings in the most money for artists (believe it or not).

Whatever he makes, he's not spending. I think he still lives in a rental and is def not spening his $ on clothes or expensive toys. I'm 100% sure his cousin (a very savvy music insider) has set him up with some good financial planners as well.
