Title: Who's Watching Torchwood?
Description: If you're not, you really should!

Torchwood is a fantastic show on BBC America. It's a spinoff of Doctor Who, another fantastic show (several of you know that I am a huge, huge Doctor Who fan!)

Torchwood is a secret oganization in the U.K. that fights aliens, using alien technology that they come across on earth. It may sound kind of corny, but it's really a great show. The acting is amazing and the storylines are so great!

I think that even people who are not into sci-fi would like this show. It's slick and sexy and moves very fast. It's on Saturday nights.

Discuss the show here! My question right now is, how much do you think Jack really cares for Gwen? And for Ianto, for that matter? Is he just with Ianto because he can't be with Gwen?

Also, I like finding out more about Jack's past.

I am amending my previous statement--there are tender and sad moments in Torchwood also.

I think the writing gets better and better all the time!

I'm going to have to check this series out. It sounds interesting. Thanks for the info!

TV Guide always gives it rave reviews. The actors are soooo good, and you really grow to love them as a team and root for each one of them.

You can catch some previews and clips on YouTube, although they tend to focus a lot of Jack's bisexuality. There's a LOT more to the show than that, though.

I've watched a few episodes. It's a pretty cool show. The emotional component of the romances are pretty steamy and the scifi/action component is equally cool. It's very much like The X Files meets any soap opera.

As you know, Wee, I love this show. So much so, that I go everywhere I can to get spoilers. I've actually seen two episodes that haven't even been shown in the US yet, and have read things about the remaining episodes. Anyway, I've gotten one of my best friends (who is a sci fi buff from way back) loving the show as well. But she doesn't have digital cable, so she comes to my house every other Saturday night or so to catch up. I've been mum about spoilers to her, because she doesn't want to know about them.

So, she's at my house last Saturday night and we're watching Dr. Who, which comes on before Torchwood. Anna hasn't seen Torchwood's "Reset "yet, which is being shown as a repeat before the new episode, "Dead Man Walking". I was anxious to get her reaction to the end of Reset because, like me, Owen is her favorite character. I knew what was going to happen weeks before, so I wasn't shocked at the ending (though sad!), so I was really stoked and anxious to get Anna's reaction. I just knew she was going to fall off the couch and scream at the TV! So, we're watching this ep of Dr. Who and a commercial comes on and before I can grab the remote to change the channel, you see the teaser for "Dead Man Walking" where Martha is getting ready to do the autopsy. Totally spoiled my "waiting for the moment" thing!!! Of course, Anna was surprised, but it wasn't the same kind of "OMG moment" I was waiting for. She guessed immediately after seeing the commercial about them getting another glove and said, "he won't stay dead". I told her in all honesty, "I promise you, he's dead and stays dead. He's dead, dead, dead. He's dead at the beginning of the episode after "Reset" and stays dead". Of course, she couldn't see the twinkle in my eye as I was saying that.

This week's "Something Borrowed" is really good and very funny. I watched the following one, "From Out of the Rain" on the tube of u this morning. I liked it very much.

wee_moggie - March 17, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
Oh, too bad the spoiler was ruined!

I love the idea of Owen staying dead. It was a surprise to me; I just figured they would find a way to bring him back to life. It was sad to see him throwing out all his food. He really has nothing besides Torchwood.

I also like the idea that he understands in a new way what Jack goes through. I like Owen's line when he says to Jack that Jack gets to live forever, but he has to stay dead forever. Now, like Jack, he has turned into something that no one is familiar with.

You know, throughout the whole series there is this running theme that after death, there is just darkness and nothing else. Then it turned into darkness and something is there, coming for you. I wonder what else the after-death will turn into. I'm hoping it changes, maybe into something more positive!

My husband used to refuse to watch it with me, but he watches it now, on the condition that he gets to criticize it! When Owen was telling the woman that he couldn't save the old man because he couldn't give him breath, because he has no breath, my husband said, "If he has no breath, how can he TALK?" But I'm glad he is watching it now, because he's understanding the show and we can talk about it.

I had a nice surprise when I saw who was playing the old man in the bed! It was Richard Briers! Did you ever see the series "Monarch of the Glen"? It's one of my very favorite BBCA shows ever. He played Hector, Archie's father. Also, Richard Briers has been in several of Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare movies. He's a really good actor.

I'm debating watching the rest of the Torchwood episodes on YouTube. I like looking forward to the next episode every week, but I did find out ahead of time about Owen dying, and I was happy about that, because it would have been so hard to take just seeing it for the first time. I had to prepare!

I go into Borders every once in a while and check if they have the new Doctor Who magazine. I love reading that, and they have a lot of info about Torchwood. I would get a subscription, but it's so expensive!

Someone on the Torchwood boards had a good explanation for this. Whether this was what the writer was thinking or not, I still like it. The shot that killed Owen put a big hole in his lung. Therefore, he only has enough breath to talk, and not enough for artificial respiration. No spare breath at all.

I saw bits and pieces of Monarch. But thanks for filling me in, I was wondering where I had seen him before. He was wonderful in that brief scene.

There's a rumor of an American spinoff - though I think it's probably just a fan's wishful thinking - that would star James Marsters. I'll let you know if I hear anything more about it. Our adaptations of British hits don't always go well - Coupling, for instance. But then again, The Office is a huge hit. I also read last week that there's a possibility of an American version of Life on Mars. That's another British show I hope to catch up on some day; it stars the guy who played The Master in Dr. Who last year.

I can't wait to read what you think of the next episode of Torchwood. It's completely different than the other eps this year in that it's pretty much a comedy.

I subscribed to Torchwood Magazine this year. The first issue which was released in the UK almost two months ago finally arrived last week. Funny thing was it came from Michigan, not England or Wales. It's pretty expensive, and I may rethink getting it when my subscription runs out. I've never even picked up an issue of Dr. Who. I'm going to have to give that one a look-see.

wee_moggie - March 19, 2008 04:08 AM (GMT)
Oh! Oh! Life on Mars! I LOVE IT. I absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite BBCA shows ever. You HAVE to see it! It's so good, and I just cringe at the thought of an American version. Yes, it stars John Simm, who I love. It also stars Philip Glenister; he's fantastic. John Simm starred in another BBC miniseries called State of Play--absolutely fantastic! It's filled with British stars. I found out recently that they are filming an American version with Russell Crowe. I'm not sure what to think. Anyway, the point being that I love John Simm, and I went absolutely beserk when the Master regenerated into him! I was already going beserk anyway just seeing Derek Jacobi, another of my favorites, acting opposite David Tennant, so by the time John Simm came on I just about had a heart attack.

I don't know if I'd want to see a spinoff of Torchwood, because I love these actors so much. Hmmmm.

Which Torchwood boards do you go to? The BBCA one? I haven't checked that one out yet. I'm afraid I'll get totally hooked.

Borders carries the Doctor Who magazine, but I've never seen the Torchwood one. I just go into Borders and read the Doctor Who one, but if it something really special I will buy it, like the one that had Peter Davison and David Tennant on the cover, my two favorite Doctors.

I still like to bug my husband by saying, "Outside the government, beyond the police!" For some reason, that phrase really annoys him! :rotfl:

Wee - in case you haven't seen it, the Dr. Who 4th season trailer is finally available. You can see it here:

Dr. Who. 4th Season Trailer

And there is a very familiar face there!!!

I joined the Dr. Who Forum through gallifreyone dot com. All kinds of news there about Dr. Who and Torchwood and there's a link to the forum on the front page. The Torchwood forum is inside the Dr. Who forum. Here's the link:

Gallifrey One

I think the American version of Torchwood rumor is totally bogus. Though there's some spoilers out there about a reduced season next year. We Americans are used to double the episodes of a regular British season (series in their vernacular), so cutting it in half again is going to be unpopular here I think. That may just cause TPTB here to jump at the chance of making money over a series that is very very popular.

wee_moggie - March 23, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm, the link didn't actually take me to the trailer, but I searched it and watched it. That was great!

I can't wait to see Rose again! I can't wait for the Doctor's reaction. I know Donna's in love with him, but I just can't see him really being in love with anyone but Rose. Oh well, we'll have to see.

BBCA just showed "Human Nature/Family of Blood" this morning, and I caught the end. David Tennant is SUCH a good actor. *sigh*

We'll have to start a new Doctor Who thread when Season four starts.

I loved Torchwood last night! I loved how they played up Jack and Gwen's feelings for each other. When they were dancing together at her wedding, it was like they were the only two people in the world. What does Ianto think of this; surely he notices. The shapeshifter was rather nasty! So Jack was married at some point! I love how we find out more and more about him, in bits and pieces.

I really like that Ianto has more lines this season. I like his last line last night: "By day we fight aliens, by night we're the wedding fairy."

Thanks for the link to gallifreyone. I've been there, but it was a long time ago.

How did you get your subscription to the Torchwood magazine?

wee_moggie - April 7, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
Wow.

I just watched the latest episode of Torchwood this morning. Their comic episodes get funnier, and their darker episodes get darker. This was truly the darkest episode.

This one brought me to tears. So tragic. But so worth watching; this show just keeps getting better and better.

cfans - April 15, 2008 04:26 PM (GMT)
Wee, have you watched "Fragments"? I think it is the best episode yet. To use a word often used by our British cousins - I think it was brilliant. I had no idea that Tosh's and Owen's backstories were so tragic and sad. It certainly explains Owen's attitude in last year's episodes.

I've seen the last episode and would like to get your take on it after it airs on Saturday night. I won't give anything away, except to say that it was a he** of an ending to a season.

wee_moggie - April 18, 2008 03:59 AM (GMT)
Cfans, "Fragments" was BLOODY BRILLIANT! I had NO idea that the team's beginnings would be like that.

Yes, it does give you some good insight into Owen. Poor guy.

As always, I love finding out more and more about Jack.

Poor Tosh! I would have never have guessed that they would have locked her up like that.

I loved Ianto's "self-recruitment!" So the sparks were flying between him and Jack from the beginning.

I am looking forward to/dreading this last episode. I was so angry to find out that Captain John was behind the explosion.

I'm going to start a Doctor Who thread, because it's starting tomorrow!

wee_moggie - April 20, 2008 05:35 AM (GMT)
Cfans, I can't believe they're gone. I can't believe they're gone. I can't stop crying. I can't believe they're gone.

cfans - April 20, 2008 02:25 PM (GMT)
I can't believe it either. I saw that episode about two weeks ago and I still can't get over it. Immediately after I watched it, my phone rang and it was my girlfriend Anna whom I had gotten addicted to the show. It was very apparent that I was crying and she asked me if I was okay. I had to make up a story because I didn't want to spoil it for her. She came over and watched it with me last night and as soon as Tosh was shot, she started sobbing. She's very astute. She turned to me after it was over and said, "you had just finished watching that on youtube when I called you a couple of weeks ago, hadn't you?"

The rumor is that Martha will replace Owen and Mickey from Dr. Who will replace Tosh. Someone saw the filming of the last scene of the last episode of this year's Who and said that Jack walks away from the Doctor with Martha and Mickey in tow.

I refuse to believe that they are dead for good. I'm hoping that Capt. John will make it all right somehow. After all, he's still in Cardiff and he knows how to use time travel.

For some reason, Gwen is pretty universally hated on the forums. Someone added an animation to the end of the show that's pretty funny. I had to watch it twice to get it. Here it is:

Exit Wounds Alternate Ending

Did you happen to see the Graham Norton show which followed Torchwood? It was a repeat from 2007 with David Tennant. Absolutely hilarious. We needed that after the extreme sadness of watching Exit Wounds.

Edited to add - Just found this on youtube. The making of Exit Wounds. Burn Gorman gives us hope that it's not the end for Owen (I'll take any little piece of hope I can get!):

Exit Wounds Declassified

wee_moggie - April 20, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
How will Mickey be able to get back into this universe? He's trapped just like Rose and her family. Unless there's a way to get back out, because Rose does show up for some episodes this season. Interesting.

I know, when Tosh died, I kept thinking, "Oh, it can't be for good, they can go back in time or something." I just refused to believe it. And Owen, already being dead, has to "survive" somehow!

I really like Gwen. I don't know why people would hate her. The YouTube clip was funny though. I can't watch the Burn Gorman one right now, but I will definitely watch it later. I really do hope Owen comes back!

I did catch the Graham Norton Show afterwards, and you're right, we really did need to see that after Torchwood. It pulled me out of the depths of sorrow! It was so funny to see it again. I liked Jo Brand, the comedian that was the other quest. I liked her deadpan humor. (Or "humour" as the British spell it!) It was funny, because my husband and I walked right along where they had put the TARDIS. If we had been there and had heard noises coming from it, we sure would have investigated! I can't believe more people didn't pay attention to it. And of course, seeing David Tennant again was so thud worthy! My husband is tall and thin also; I just love that body type. :thud: I like that David is so funny and nice.

You know, gallifreyone never did send me a confirmation email, so I'll have to check on that.

Did you catch Doctor Who? If so, let's post over in that thread. Hopefully others will be reading these and we can get them to watch these amazing shows!

eyfinsf - April 21, 2008 05:31 PM (GMT)
Hi cfans and wee!

I can't believe I found this thread, but as usual, I'm too late! LOL!

I got bitten by the TW bug a couple of weeks ago while my sister was visiting from NYC. She's a BBCA fan (as am I), but we've never watched TW before. I knew I would like it if I can just catch it and watch w/out any interruption (i don't have a dvr)...Darn these kids! LOL! I so regret not watching from the season's start! Anyway, my sis and I caught a TW marathon on a Sat. afternoon/evening. It was only 3 shows, I think Ep. 8-10 and I was hooked (as I suspected I would) from the first show! (She liked it, too.)

I love everything about the show...the premise, writing, acting, characters, story lines, even the theme music! LOL. I've since been catching up w/ whatever I can find through Utoob, CCast Ondemand and the TW website, but I haven't found full videos of Eps 1-7. Do you have any suggestions where I can find them?

The season's final episode was so Great! Such a sad, touching and totally unexpected ending,...I couldn't believe they'd do that, just when I was getting to learn about and like their characters, too! But I gotta give it up to their writers, that was a gutsy thing to do IMO, but I have to wonder if it were the actors who wanted to leave...but why would they want to leave a hit show? Anyway, just thought I'd share my discovery of this great show w/ you guys.

BTW, I also caught a couple of eppies of Dr. Who and I like it too! I'll definitely follow this season. I've always liked David T's work and I love that he was in Harry Potter GOF (i'm such a HP geek! LOL)

wee_moggie - April 21, 2008 06:31 PM (GMT)
Yay eyfinsf! I'm so glad you found our thread!

Cfans may have a better idea on where you can watch the previous episodes.

When I heard that they were doing this spinoff of Doctor Who, I thought I wouldn't like it, but you only have to watch one episode of Torchwood to get totally hooked!

I annoy my husband by saying, "Outside the government, beyond the police!" He used to watch it with me, but he refuses to now. He found some of the episodes too disturbing for him. However, he did feel bad for me when I (tearfully) told him what happened to Tosh and Owen.

BBCA is pretty good about doing those mini-marathons of Torchwood, so keep on the lookout for those! They do them for Doctor Who also.

You know, I don't think most people put two and two together regarding David Tennant being in Harry Potter (I LOVED his performance). I read an article that said that Daniel Radcliffe wished there was more David Tennant scenes, because he thought he was so good.

Keep posting as you watch more episodes! Cfans and I love talking about it! Now you are part of our Torchwood team!

cfans - April 21, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
Welcome to our Torchwood addiction eyfinsf. Last season's Torchwood is available on DVD, so you might be able to rent it somewhere. Some (if not all)of the season 2 episodes are still on youtube if you know where to look. The BBC has been pretty diligent about removing them, but they haven't found them all. Here is a link to the first part of the first episode this season - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It should be pretty easy to find the remaining parts by looking in the poster's folder:

Kiss Kiss Bang Bank Part 1

Here's the first part of the second episode, Sleeper:

Sleeper, Part 1

Third Episode: To the Last Man, part 1:

To The Last Man, part 1

Fourth Episode: Meat, part 1:

Meat, part 1

Fifth Episode: Adam, part 1:

Adam, part 1

Unfortunately, I've only been able to find the first part of the sixth episode, Reset. Perhaps you can contact the person who posted it to see if he/she can provide you with the other parts. This is a fantastic episode and what happens in it changes a character forever.

Reset, part 1

I'll edit this post as I find more.

eyfinsf - April 21, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
Hi Wee, what have I gotten myself into? LOL!
Not only do I need/want to catch up on TW's 1st season, there's also Dr Who previous seasons to watch as well! Of course now, I want to see how the two shows are connected. Yet another reason for sleepless nights ahead! :rotfl:

David Tennant was so good in Harry Potter GOP! It's a shame that he was only in a handful of scenes in the movie because his character had a bigger part in the book.

Looking forward to season 3 of TW! In the meantime, I've got lots of catching up to do!

eyfinsf - April 21, 2008 10:23 PM (GMT)
Hi cfans,

LOL! Torchwood addiction, i love that! Looking forward to getting all caught up!

I'm definitely gonna rent the TW S1 DVD and thanks so much for all the links and tips on finding the past episodes! You sure know where to find them because I didn't find too much on my attempts. I appreciate you taking the time, you :rocker: !
