The Season 7 videos are up featuring the top 24. I checked out David Archuleta and he picked Elliott as his favorite past idol and talks about one of his performances.I knew this kid was talented but he has good taste too.

I saw that. Yes he does have good taste. Too bad he got slammed on TMZ, they referred to him as a liar. He's another one of the controversial ones from this season. But he's definately talented.
Linda4Elliott - February 16, 2008 03:26 PM (GMT)
yeah, this was mentioned down in the AI forum here. Also contestant Chikezie Eze mentions Elliott.
jamie50 - February 16, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
Oops. Just saw the discussion in the AI thread where I guess this belongs.
I remember a few of last year's group mentioned Elliott but none made it very far. David has a good chance to go far this year. I just wish the show was more honest about all of their backgrounds.
Still it's nice to hear the new crew talk about a guy that was kicked off the show a couple of years ago and finished third. One that supposedly would be forgotten by now. Remember? :rotfl:

I noticed that too Jamie. Elliott is unforgettable... they have to talk about him.. :elliottcap2:

That's cool! I don't really care too much for David Archuleta but I love Chikezie Eze!! He says he loves and appreciates Donny Hathaway much like Elliott. I hope he (Chikezie)doesn't pull a Brandon Rogers and start messing up during performance time because he seems like a really down to earth dude but he's overshadowed by other contestants. :)

Archuleta will win it all.

David is my fave! Cool that he likes Elliott. Did someone say that he was one of the controversial ones? How can he be so controversial, being so young?
I wonder how far he'll go. As he stands now, I'd like to make the same prediction as OG, but you never know...hopefully he'll be consistent but often 'solid' contestants are disappointing, once the 'real' contest starts.

I think it's Danny Noriega who is controversial? I'm guessing...I could be wrong.

No it was David Archuleta that hit the TMZ this week because they said he protrayed himself as a new kid on the block, doubting he had the talent, etc. when actually he had won Star Search, had been on other television shows. serenaded AI Season 1 contestants. One could say that most of his exposure was pre-voice change. Thank goodness he didn't lose it. LOL
ETA: They talked about it on Idol Wrap and defended him. Kimberly Caldwell said she also had been on Star Search.

well, at least he wasn't semi-professional and put there on purpose to try and give his career a boost

Plus, he really likes Elliott, very cool

Dear David Archuleta Street Team,
As most of you probably already know, our Fansite www.myspace.com/davidarchuleta has been taken over by MySpace or TPTB (The Powers That Be). For some reason it appears we are being considered an "official" site so, like the MySpace addresses of other Top 24 Contestants, all content has been removed from our page. We are no longer able to access the "Edit Profile" features.
But that's okay! We can still message and send out bulletins at this point. That's why it's so important you keep telling your friends to join the Street Team so we can continue to communicate with you all in case we're denied those features in the future.
First of all, we thought you might enjoy knowing it was leaked that the song David sang for his first Top 50 audition (with the keyboard) was "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. American Idol was unable to obtain a release from the Artist to show that performance on Television. We hear that the judges loved his rendition. Wish we could have seen it!
Now on to other topics. Some of you have written expressing your concerns that using the telephone dialing software at www.dialidol.com as we suggested might be unfair. Before we sent out that e-mail we first checked the American Idol website www.americanidol.com/faqs/ to find out what their rules were. This is what it says about using technology to vote:
"A weekly monitoring procedure will be in place to prevent individuals from unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting by generating significant blocks of votes using technical enhancements. The producers reserve the right to remove any identified 'power dialing' votes. Note that this applies to both toll-free and Text Messaging votes."
We then contacted Support at www.dialidol.com and asked whether or not American Idol would consider using their software "power dialing." This was their response:
As far as I know American Idol was becoming more accepting of DialIdol – not less – but then again I'd be the last person they'd tell if they changed the rules. I would however probably know if something like that were true because DialIdol visitors tend to keep me informed of that kind of thing.
I wrote this last year – it includes a direct quote from an AI spokesperson that states modem dialing is not power dialing. (There are rules against power dialing and DialIdol is not a power dialer.)
My hometown newspaper, The Plain Dealer, did an exceptional article on DialIdol complete with a full page story on the front of the "PDQ" section. Of particular interest is a quote from FOX spokeswoman Jennifer Sprague where she finally confirms that "Using a modem dialer is not the same as 'power dialing'". Which means DialIdol is not subject to their power dialer rule - thus confirming that all DialIdol votes count!
So as far as I am concerned DialIdol is good to go for another great season and I have never been more ready!"
Hopefully this addresses everyone's concerns. DialIdol simply dials your phone for you and keeps statistical records of busy signals. You do need a land line AND a telephone modem in order to use their software.
Many of you are also writing asking "What can I do to help?!" The answer is, whatever your imagination can come up with. Here are some ideas other Street Team members have come up with:
1.) Temporarily change your MySpace display name to "Vote 4 David Archuleta American Idol!" on Tuesdays when the guys perform. GREAT idea!
2.) Post bulletins on MySpace telling your friends about David (including links to or videos of his performances such as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFtT-R1AHzA ) and ask them to vote and join the Street Team.
3.) Blog, send out e-mails, write about David in forums, leave positive comments on his YouTube videos, etc.
4.) Repost bulletins from the Street Team on your MySpace. (We'll send you an e-mail saying PLEASE REPOST if there's something we'd like you to repost)
4.) Create, print, and hand out "Vote for David Archuleta" flyers at your schools, churches, and events.
5.) Involve people where you work. For instance one ST member who works with hundreds of kids is going to have a voting contest!
6.) Some ST members are DJs and are endorsing David on their radio programs.
7.) Like we said, "ANYTHING" your imagination can come up with!!!!
Today is Saturday, and David's first live Top 12 guy's performance is TUESDAY, so let's get going Street Team. We need you now! Let's show America that David Archuleta is The Next American Idol!!!

skiddlybop - February 17, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
David's great teen bait, of course.
But I feel nervous about the wheezing that is so audible every time he breathes in between lines. He's good, with his background, but I'll be waiting to see whether he can really deliver something unexpectedly musical or emotional. I didn't feel that way about anyone yet -- even the Australian, who may have been cast as a better looking Taylor.
Also, IIRC, the panel was thoroughly unmoved by Elliott's delivery of "Heaven," especially Simon, and I felt thoroughly spun by the ooh-ing and aah-ing of the panel following David's version, especially when you can stream Elliott's and hear how much more muscially composed and technically perfect E's was.
I hate to say it but David and at least two much-praised females in the 24 I think may be exposed with pitch and range problems once we see them having to sing down more than a verse and half a chorus of a song before being interrupted and Simon saying that he has divined that they are already a star.
I really really recommend a fascinating album by Aretha Franklin -- no, two I recommend. First is her landmark gospel album "Amazing Grace," from 1972, where she was at her peak vocally. Listen through it and you will hear where dozens of vocal licks and flourishes and mannerisms were STOLEN from. Especially Freddie Mercury's concluding run on the word "love" on "Somebody to Love?" Copied it from Aretha exactly.
The other aretha album I recommend is Rare And Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul on Rhino, just released this year. You will hear demo versions of songs like "I Never Loved a Man (The Way That I Love You)" and "Dr, Feelgood" that will show you...even Aretha needed practice, and she thought about her delivery and crtitiqued and edited herself in a way that youngsters now refuse to. But even the genius Aretha needed time to get her delivery down and perfect her treatment of the song. This is why Elliott stood out so much; many of his competitors actually thought that their unschooled instinct was genius; Elliott understood that you have to learn from the geniuses as best as you can.
The idea that kids can pull a rabbit out their hat, do something even Aretha never tried to do...is the worst fallacy sold by American Idol. (Besides the nutty false excitement of major-label rejects like Carly and The Australian.)

I am always mad when I listen again to Simon's comments after Elliott performed 'Heaven'. I was so impressed on that night with Elliott's amazing voice.
On that night I googled for the first time 'Elliot Yamin' (that was my spelling then).
And now Simon loves the renditions which are not as good.
Although we need to remember that he said only to one contestant the famous
"In five (six, seven) seasons you are the best male vocalist we've ever had".
David A is a good singer but so far I did not hear from him a song I wanted to hear again and again.
That's how I feel when I listen to E.
We will see how David will do. I see other contestants who may prove to be better than him.
Of course he is showing to have a good musical taste choosing Elliott as an idol ( :rotfl: ).
Anyway I don't think that there is another Elliott there.

It's not like these things are incompatible.
I wish the show told us their real backstories, if they're going to tell backstories at all.
But I'd be willing to bet that he's been ordered not to mention Star Search. It seems way too coincidental to me that absolutely nobody from Star Search (like Lisa Tucker) or any other show (wasn't somebody else here on The One?) and nobory with a former recording contract mentions those things. ... That has to be the producers' decision and not the contestants, if you ask me. If it weren't the producers, I think somebody would feel like telling the truth.

Garrett's interview says this: Don"t offer Garrett Haley a bed-he'd rather sleep on the floor! He tells americanidol.com about this and how he's like Chris Daughtry but different.
That's why I thought it was him :-)

That's ridiculous. I can't believe TMZ is getting on David's case over this. A number of other AI contestants have been on Star Search and AI did not acknowledge this on the air, but no one batted an eye! I recently read something that listed them, but I can't remember all of them now. I know Lisa Tucker was one of them. And Alexandrea Lushington from this season actually competed against David Archuleta on Star Search and lost!
Who cares that David was on Star Search and then some local TV shows? He got prize money for winning, but he didn't get a record deal! He was just a little kid! His appearance on that show wouldn't make it any easier for him to get a record deal on his own, without AI, in such a competitive industry. So he doesn't have any unfair advantage going into this season, and he's never had a chance at a record deal before.
Now, if you want to talk about Carly Smithson and Kristy Lee Cook... a case could be made that their inclusion in the show is unfair, since they already had chances in the recording industry. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I do like Carly... but that's a topic for another thread.

Well, I have to say that I am disappointed in that so many of this year's contestants have been on stage before. I get so nervous for them and then they do so well, I'm floored. Then I hear they have been doing this for years and that is why it looks natural for them. UGH! It really takes the drama out of it all.
I'm probably looking for that same feeling I had when I first saw Elliott sing. He was a scared kid with a funny hairdo and we loved him! We felt his emotions as he got better and better on stage. He blossomed into a seasoned talent and we sent him off into the world.... it was beautiful!! I guess there will be no more Elliotts. We have the only one

I'm rooting for David. I knew he is very talented ever since the first time i heard him (he did a great job with "Heaven" (and i also saw some past videos in youtube)
I hope he makes it to the "blessed" spot of #3 in American Idol.
"Shop Around" was so upbeat and soulful. I never heard that song before yet i felt it could be in the radio right now and it would be an instant hit.
This kid has a lot of future ahead of him.

Well, this may actually be the point you were making, but don't the Queen guys say that they deliberately wrote that song in Aretha's style and as a kind of a tribute to her? ... Of course, I guess they might say that after the fact if people noticed something stolen. But they've always been pretty conscious composers, so I tend to believe them when they say that creating Somebody to Love as an homage to Aretha was their intention -- and in that case copying one of her runs would be part of the point, particularly copying it note for note as the close of the song, where it would certainly be noticed.
It's hard for me to imagine Freddie Mercury not being able to come up with his own vocal flourishes if he felt like it. I guess I'm puzzled by your word "stolen." "Deliberately copied" for the purpose of your art -- *hoping* people would notice -- would be more correct in this case, wouldn't it?
