I don't get it. Chickezie sang Donny Hathaway's (and Elliott's) I believe to my soul tonight. He did a great job of it, by the way. Different than Elliott, but I thought it was good. What I don't get is the judges raved over the song, but I clearly remember them trying to talk Elliott out of singing it and Simon even telling him you can't sing a song like that to win a competition...or something like that.

2 years later, the opinion has changed????? By the way, Chick also acknowledged Kendra, just as Elliott did.

Chick-E is no E (but he kinda reminds me of E in a way)

Anyway, did anyone see it and did you have the same reaction I did to the comments and how they were so opposite of what Elliott got?

Let's just put it this way, chikezie's best is one of Elliott's so so performance in the eyes of the judges. So, now we see where chikezie is really at vocally.

But I loved how Elliott sang it by the way. Especially the repeat (yes, the time he got the boot :( I don't even want to be reminded).

I think the judges expected vocal masterpiece from Elliott and this song was simply the bubbly, jumpy one.

It's a different stage in the competition, though.....

I mean, at this point Chikezie's not exactly trying to "win" but just to stay in the game. And since he did a much more upbeat, smiley version of the song than Elliott did (and completely mushmouthed "I'm gonna have to use my rod," unlike E!). Plus, after Elliott sang the song twice on Idol it became *much* better known than it had been previously (:yes:). So I can kind of see how you might feel it *was* appropriate for what Chikezie needed to do this week, now that it's not such an obscure song any more.

Meanwhile, Elliott sang it in the final three -- when you really are trying to win it all -- and he did a (briliant) angry, tough, old-school kind of version (I thought) of what was then a pretty much totally forgotten song. So maybe they did think it wasn't suited to win over the proportion of the audience you actually need when you're one of the final three (not one of the final 20), since they repeatedly say at that point to just about everybody that you need to sing stuff the audience can sing along with.

On the other hand, maybe they were just trying to be sure Elliott stayed out of the final two -- as ordered by Nigel and company!

Actually, I think both these things are probably true.

Elliott's version was so much more than just a song. To me, it was a big "Eff You" to the producers of American Idol that treated him like crap. Like applesauce said, E's version was tough and angry. You can clearly hear it in his voice and I remember Randy telling Elliott after he performed "man, you can definitely sing"...or something along those lines. I loved it!

On the other hand, Chekezie performed the song to showcase some personality and save his behind from last weeks disaster and it worked for him. Chikezie has a throwback voice (some have even compared him to Luther Vandross-I hear Jeffrey Osborne!) so I don't think this song truly showcased what he is capable of (vocally) but I did enjoy his performance.

If I had to choose, I would say I liked both performances.

Elliotts was best

Since Chikezie sang a song Elliott did, it's only fair for Elliott to sing "If Only For One Night" now.......I would die if he sang that! :pray: lol

Chickezie so much made me think of Little Johnny Taylor, I feel like he could do justice to Part Time Love. As far as what Elliott can do justice to, let me think....hmm....ANYTHING!! How about that?!

I'm really going to miss Chikizie. He really grew on me week after week. I also loved his eyes and expressive face. I'm so happy he made the top 10 so he can tour.

I third that comment. He did NOT deserve to be eliminated from the competition after that awesome ballad. I still say that annoying mosh pit is detracting from the show!
