MY IDOL ELLIOTT - February 28, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
HI Y'all,I don't know whats going on with "One Word"I mean I don't know if its not having a marketing group or not,but Elliotts Single "One Word" is not getting much airplay these days and when Elliott was on Montel and other shows he didn't sing "One Word".I remember Elliotts latest interview Elliott said he was bumbed about "One Word"not taking off.I think "One Word"has beautiful words and I know if this song "One Word"took off it would become #1!How can "One Word"take off?I know in my home town of Sacramento,CA they are not playing "One Word"!Also on VH1 Top 20 Countdown they took off "One Word"Music Video the first week it was on and it never past #20 on the countdown! It'a a great Music Video!Does anyone have any ideas on "One Word"?All I can say is "One Word"Emazin! :1word: :elliottelliott: :elliottcap2: :chloe: 4 LIFE!!!

Well, I think One Word is better than most songs they play on the radio, so maybe the question should be what's wrong with the radio stations?
Taratova - February 28, 2008 08:21 PM (GMT)
When One Word was released there was major competition of many new songs. One word started to get airplay and climbed the charts for a while on mediabase.
The website of Mediabase records the number of times a song is played and what stations are playing the song.. as One Word climbed there was a red arrow pointing up as it is gettng new spins. When two stations who were putting out very high spins of One Word drastically cut the spins down in a few days leaving the song going down on the charts.. Even though there were new starter stations adding One Word, it was not enough to recoup the bullit, the red arrow pointing up. Radio stations read these charts looking for new songs and decide what songs they want to add and what songs are doing well. Many stations are followers and if the bullit,( red arrow ) is gone they pass on that song and pick something that is climbing. The stations that were already playing One Word , approximately 10 stations slowly dropped the song as it was not picked up by any more starter stations . The reason new stations did not play One Word is because of the decreasing spins by two stations and loss of bullit.
If the two stations had not cut the spins , I believe Elliott would have had another hit with One Word. This is my assessment of the situation with One Word as I watched it daily on Mediabase and feedback from DJ's themselves.

Well, I think of it like this: Recall the very best music you've ever heard, your very favorite songs from all the albums you've owned over the years. Now, how many of those songs got heavy play on Top 40 radio? ... For most people, I'll bet the answer is, Not all that many.
There doesn't have to be *anything* wrong with a song for it not to succeed on radio. Radio is a strange beast all its own and, by accounts, it's getting stranger and more beastly all the time as control of playlists moves from local djs and then program directors to executives in the suites of a few corporate headquarters. Harder and harder for any song to get traction with the radio power increasingly concentrated in just a few hands.

Well I wish I could figure it out...
I try and call in a request for a song by Elliott a couple times a week...it's always WFY...I try and follow up every so often with a thank you call and then ask if they have OW...and they don't...sooooo I'm not really sure what is going on... :elliottcap2:
Edited to say...the very nice DJ Candy James on KWAV loves E...but WFY is all she got...

Like 99% of music released to Top 40 radio, it did not become a hit. You can try to analyze why or just shrug and move on. I've done the latter. Elliott will (hopefully) have other radio hits.
Not every song released by successful artists becomes a hit. I think everyone here can understand that and not assume that there's anything "wrong" with the song or that it's a life and death situation for Elliott or his career. I'm sure Elliott and his team will use the whole thing as a learning experience.
Taratova - February 28, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
Elliott could always re release it down the road.. songs first time around don't make it then all of a sudden renewed interest.
jamie50 - February 28, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
I think the team is putting all their focus on getting hits for the second album. Who knows? Maybe Real Love will become a hit. That would be cool.
I'm stepping into it here but if Elliott ever releases (God forbid) a song that doesn't become a major hit, can people acknowledge it in a realistic and timely way and not see it some kind of "If I believe hard enough, it will happen thing."
Ducks and runs away.

One Word made it up to 48, didn't it? That's not too shabby. He'll do fine. The bulk of the world (people other than us) are still sleepin' on how talented he is. We forget that to most of the population, he's not mentioned every few sentences in every conversation. It's not that people don't like him, they just don't know him yet. But they will. He's a legend in the making, we've known all along. Everyone else will wake up at some point.

Loved your post.

Jackie, you're right - it did make it to 48 - I really agree with your post - the brilliance of Elliott Yamin is a fact - it will just take time for everyone to notice.
Taratova - February 29, 2008 12:09 AM (GMT)
Good luck is needed too meaning all the right things happening to a song. It also depends on the radio programmers, buzz about the song, a bullit going up, hype and needing something fresh and new. Elliott is just beginning. Many who visit Youtube Wait For You song are surprised it is Elliott Yamin from Idol singing the song. Some don't even know Elliott was on Idol.

Yep it didn't too bad at all with OW! I definitely think Elliott has moved on from it. At the JCC event he sang three songs and one word wasn't one of them.
I think we're in store for lots of great things.... It's entirely possible that once he releases a more commercially friendly second cd that people will have to have the first one. I always think back to when I heard Billy Joel sing Just the Way YOu are... I had to have the album The Stranger. Then I found out he had previous albums. I had to get those too!

My guess on "One Word"--
PDs simply weren't thrilled with it, and its callout didn't justify giving it much airplay. I think it was probably too similar to WFY for some people.
But like Jackie said, it DID go top 50. A number of people got to hear it. It wasn't a huge hit, but that's okay.
I'm looking forward to seeing Elliott's new stuff. I'll bet he'll have some good singles to release very soon.

I gave my sister Elliott's cd for xmas. She hated One Word. After seeing Elliott perform it live at the gala last night, she TOTALLY changed her tune.

OW is over, sooo 2007.
Elliott is not alone; many second singles fail to hit (see Kelly Clarkson, The Plain White T's, James Blunt; historically, Madonna and Fleetwood Mac).
The important thing now is to IMPRESS the PDs and DJs with a new effort. NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP for the second CD. Hopefully, Mr. Yamin has lined up good promotions people and is seeking the best material. He appears on the right track, as we know Daine Warren sought him out for one of her "power" songs.
They'll be no harm in having Jackson release "Real Love", though I'm not sure it can go anywhere in today's market. The song was also recorded when McPhee had a recording contract/career; now that she does not, with no backing from a label or promoter, it could dampen the chances for the song. If they had only used Joss Stone........

I agree about the Joss Stone comment. Her voice is perfect for the song "Real Love". It has the warm soulfulness that would compliment and add more dimension to the song.

Oh I think so too. I was just pointing out that I think a big secret to loving OW is hearing it live. At least that was the case for me. But I agree, it's time to move on and look ahead to new music.

Like I said previously, it has to have good timing. Many stations played the song alot and liked it. A drastic drop in spins sent it down. One station killed this song in the rise of its spins. Then a second station finished it off..
I Love Elliott - March 3, 2008 03:28 PM (GMT)
When I first heard the Cd last year, One Word was a song that I would skip over to get to others.
I learned to like it after Elliott said that it would be the next single.
Maybe if radio HAD given it more play, people like me , would have learned to like it too.
Plus you are right.........it was "wonderful" LIVE.
