Malaria No More to Continue Idol's Fight against Malaria
NEW YORK, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- American Idol and FOX announced that this year's Idol Gives Back, airing Wednesday, April 9 (7:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, will raise awareness and funds to fight malaria in Africa for the second year in a row as part of its star-studded event.
Malaria No More is honored to once again be named a beneficiary of Idol Gives Back, which last year raised more than $76 million, including $9 million for Malaria No More and over $8 million for other malaria-related causes.
In 2007, funds raised for Malaria No More by Idol fans and corporate sponsor ExxonMobil provided life-saving bed nets to more than one million mothers and children in Angola, Mali, Madagascar, Uganda and Zambia.
Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease that claims over one million lives every year; an African child dies every 30 seconds of the disease.
Malaria No More and Idol stars have worked closely to combat malaria over the last year. In June, Melinda Doolittle and Malaria No More joined First Lady Laura Bush in Zambia to distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Last month, 2007 Idol winner Jordin Sparks joined President and Mrs. Bush in Ghana to perform and highlight malaria-control efforts.
Former Idol finalist Elliott Yamin traveled to Angola this month to see malaria programs sponsored by Malaria No More and ExxonMobil, a sponsor of Idol Gives Back 2007.
"I was shocked to learn of the devastation caused by malaria," said Sparks. "It's incredible what a difference a simple mosquito net can make in the life of a child."
"Idol Gives Back will let Americans know what they can do to help in the fight against malaria," said Kate Campana, Managing Director of Malaria No More. "When a $10 bed net saves a life, every Idol fan can be a hero."
In addition to Malaria No More, Idol Gives Back will raise funds for the Children's Defense Fund, The Global Fund, Make It Right, Save the Children and the Children's Health Fund.
19 Entertainment/Jive Records artist Jordin Sparks and former American Idol finalists Melinda Doolittle and Elliott Yamin are available for interviews upon request. Please contact Martin Edlund at 212 710 5891 or Martin.Edlund@malarianomore.org.

Thank you Nancy. I didn't have any sound with my clip but that's more likely a conflict in my computer. Your capture looks great.

OMG - This was such an amazing teaser.
A little one named after Elliott. Elliott is a "Godfather" Lol!!
I was in tears with him. Thank God I taped the show for my 8 year old who has to be in bed by 9 p.m. Now I can watch this over and over again.
How touching.
I do hope he sings too.... Guess we have to wait until April 9th to find out!
PS: In that heat, no wonder he cut those curls. I will miss them, though!

Awww man, it was wonderful to see Elliott back on Idol....even if it was indirectly, he wasn't performing & he was in Angola! lol
I was bawling with him when they told him the baby boy would be named Elliott, for him. And then, when he came out declaring he was now a godfather. *sigh* So PROUD of him & just... *sigh* I love him.
OH! have to add that my girls started screamin & clapping when they saw Elliott on tv. Altho, they were a lil disappointed when the segment ended & he hadn't sang. My oldest asked me,"Why did they let that girl sing & not Elliott? That is NOT fair" She is SO smart...kinda scares me! :fangirly:

Hmm, this is interesting from the
Kodak Theater website:
Idol Gives Back
A musical celebration raising awareness and benefiting various U.S and international charities. This year's event will be bigger and more ambitious than ever. Scheduled to appear* Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Fergie, Heart, John Legend, Annie Lennox, Carrie Underwood and many more! The star-studded evening will echo the success of last year's show which raised over $76 million.
Sunday, April 6 at 7 PM (Doors close at 6:30pm)
$500/$350/$250/$150/$100/$50
Since they are pre-taping performances on April 6, it would be possible for an Elliott performance on IGB while he is performing live at the ASCAP Awards.
I'm crossing my fingers that this will happen.

I imagine that the show will be a combination of live commentary and pre-taped performances. Even if Elliott's not there "live," I imagine we'll see more of him and Fantasia from Angola -- especially after the warm response to the short clip they showed Wednesday night. We want MORE Elliott!!!

I'm positive we will see more footage of him and Fantasia. I can't imagine that they would put up the expense of sending those two to Angolia, just for that little preview. Also, the fact that its mentioned on his Myspace, definitely means we'll see more of him on the 9th.

I clicked on "View All" on his myspace and it gives you more information than what appears on the front page. Then is what it says for "Idol Gives Back" entry - "Tune in to American Idol".

I'm so happy someone taped it. Got home late last night... and was all ready to take a nice break this afternoon and watch the show from last week... but when I went to my DVR there was no AI. As I slapped myself in the head I now remember DH pulled the plug out of the entertainment center before we left. ARGHHH. No big screen viewing. So glad for the internet. Now I'll have to go to youtube to see Kellie's performance too.

Hi, klo129!!! A Japanese fan here! :)
All the E-Trainers here in Japan have been desparetely trying to find out which radio stations he's going to appear during his stay in Tokyo. So far we found out one for later today, but not sure if the program is live or taped. So we are still desparate!! :(
If we can meet him and have a chance and time to ask him questions today, I'm gonna ask him if he sang in Angola and if he's gonna appear/sing on Idol Gives Back.
Go E-Train!

klo129-san,
None of the japanesese fans knew about the website you mentioned till yesterday evening. We tried to call the radio station as soon as we found out but it was after their office hours and we all had to go to bed wondering what, when, where the program will be. The website says the program has two parts, and siba-san and other girls just found out a little less than an hour ago that he will be performing in the second half of the program. We still don't know if it's open to public or not. We will go to the station just in case though. If it is and if I can hear him sing, it will be truely AMAZING because it's gonna be my first time! I also want to ask him about IGB if i have a chance.
