chloewannabee - March 27, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
Okay, so I was bored today,and thought this might be fun...
If you were a contestant on AI today, what song would you sing from the year you were born??( sneaky way to find out how young everyone is)

Okay,I would choose( the choices were not a lot)
Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?

And honest , even though it was recorded a few times before,

* Louis Armstrong - 1947 - (his rendition of the song has also been the theme song for TVs "Frank's Place")
* Billie Holiday - 1947
* Eddie Condon - 1951
* Frankie Laine - 1953
* Fats Domino - 1958
* Jonah Jones - 1958
* Pete Fountain - 1959
* Ricky Nelson - 1960
* Al Hirt - 1962
* Stéphane Grappelli - 1981
* Dardanelle - 1985
* Alliance Hall Dixieland Band - 1988
* Harry Connick Jr. (with Dr. John) - 1988 - (Connick also played the song during a concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.)
* Alison Krauss - 1989
* Fats Domino - 1993
* Yoshio Toyama & Don Sutton - 1994
* Martin Taylor & Chet Atkins - 1995
* Tara Darnell - 1996
* Janet Carroll - 2000
* The Manhattan Transfer - 2000
* Suede - 2001
* Victoria Williams - 2002
* Preservation Hall Jazz Band - 2005
* Stefano Bollani - 2006

Also recorded by: Nat King Cole; Rosemary Clooney; Four Vagabonds; Lee Wiley

I would put my own spin on it! I swear!!!!i'D MAKE IT MY OWN DAWG!

So what song would YOU pick?

I got the list from this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:20th_century_songs

Berkana - March 27, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
I'd sing Hot Hot Hot!!! by The Cure. Because I'm cool like that. :-D That or Straight Outta Compton.

No just kidding, I wouldn't sing Hot Hot Hot!!!.

chattycb - March 27, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the link Chloe. That was fun.
I'd chose Long, Tall Sally by Little Richard b/c I'm neither. :rotfl:

Rutti - March 27, 2008 11:16 PM (GMT)
I'd do "Since I Fell For You" one of my favorites of all time and has been recorded by scads of people. Never realized it was from the year of my birth. I think my favorite rendition is by Al Jarreau, but then I'm a big Al Jarreau fan.

realitymom - March 27, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)

What fun! I looked at the list for my year, way back in 1954, yikes! I chose "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" because I love the city, the song and Tony Bennett, he's amazing and still going strong!

I love that song too and I remember this version sung by Lenny Welch from Bruce Springsteen's town Asbury Park. It is just a few towns from where I live.

I love that song...

Rick1965 - March 28, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
Tonight Rick will be performing Mustang Sally...because as a very young Paula Abdul once said..."Rick... you are one funky Latino boy"!!

KrazeeK120 - March 28, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
I'd do "Beat It" by Michael Jackson.

Just kidding.

I'd really either do "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John or "Separate Ways" by Journey.

If I were a guy, I'd do "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel.

ElliottCat101 - March 28, 2008 02:41 AM (GMT)
Well, the only song from the list I recognized was "Somewhere Out There", and since I always loved that song in An American Tail, I think I'd sing that song!

nanab - March 28, 2008 02:45 AM (GMT)
My song would be...Teardrops From My Eyes..by Ruth Brown..
Love her...

Great idea Chloe...

Top 10 songs of each year going back to 1943..Elliott just missed for 2007. I believe WFY was #11. I think.... could be wrong..

merrr - March 28, 2008 05:38 PM (GMT)
I'd definitely pick "The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA, I love that song!

Runners up:
"The Tide Is High" by Blondie
"Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes

I'd love to sing "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen but it would be pretty awkward to sing that if I got eliminated! Haha!

leam2792 - March 29, 2008 06:10 AM (GMT)
Based on Top 100 Hits of 1974, I'd probably pick The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand or Until You Come Back To Me by Aretha Franklin :)

http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1974.htm

terriberriez - March 29, 2008 10:42 PM (GMT)
lol I didn't know any of those songs from 1985 :blush:

jojojam1204 - March 29, 2008 11:37 PM (GMT)
Mine would be

Blue Suede Shoes

ohioguy45780 - March 30, 2008 12:16 AM (GMT)
"American Pie", which went to #1 on the day of my birth, in January, 1972.

*****

I've always liked that fact for some reason..... thank God I wasn't born when "Shake Your Bootie" or "Ice, Ice baby" went to #1..... could you imagine having the honor of being born when "Party Like A Rockstar" topped the charts?... LOL :-)

^ Awww, Rick... but it is such a great song, isn't it? My other ABBA faves include Super Trouper, The Name of the Game, and Knowing Me, Knowing You. :)

yellowrosie - May 2, 2008 02:16 AM (GMT)

You and me both, Toni! Remember when we were still posting on the AI boards, I posted that I'd like to hear Elliott sing Spain on AI. He would totally nail it! I get goosebumps just thinking about him singing it.

I checked the songs from the year I was born and I didn't know most of them. I saw some that I know, but wouldn't want to sing them. My choice would be Walk on By by Dionne Warwick. :)

I'd sing Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me written by Harry Noble the year I was born. The most popular version was when it was sung more than a decade later by Mel Carter. Here it is from youtube:

Mel Carter Singing HMTMKM

Gloria Estefan recorded it in 1994.

I didn't like the ones they had from Wikipedia for my year (1992) so I looked at another place on Google. I'd sing "Life Is A Highway" by Tom Cochrane - I love that song, ever since I was young and I have a bunch of good memories that go along with it. C:

I'd sing Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Well it said 88' on the list, I guess it was actually released 87'. oh well.

The Great Petender
-The Platters

All this Rick Astley talk made me go to iTunes and buy his greatest hits. He was really good...I actually saw him in concert at Radio City Music Hall...many many moons ago.
