I say YES.

why glorify a nation that represents suppression, forced abortion, wrongfully executed people, and slowly killing off its own people with their bad environment policies?


FREE TIBET, SAVE DARFUR, CHINA MUST CHANGE!!

I understand why a lot of Americans want to boycott the Olympics. China has a stinky human rights record, they should never have gotten behind Darfur and Tibet should be freed.

BUT:

And this is on a personal note - I love the Olympics and sports in general too much for me to support a boycott. I think more than anything, bringing the Olympics to China can actually help bring awareness to their human rights record.

As for the issue of Tibet: They should be freed, no doubt about it. But perhaps there are other avenues by which the international community can express their thoughts on this matter?

The Olympics are supposed to be about brotherhood and camaraderie. It's the one time when different countries set aside their differences and celebrate the glory of sports. After all, what did the boycott of Moscow 80 and LA 84 do? Not much, if I recall.

Boycotting the Olympics can even further exacerbate the rift China already has with some countries. If China wants to put it's best face forward, then hosting a wonderful games will be one of the steps it has to take.

(A huge IMO in front of every point).
