Title: Should Elliott Release "Free" To Radio?

mike83 - April 17, 2008 02:16 PM (GMT)
Even if it doesn't reach top 40, it is a good idea to keep the public aware of you. After last night, a lot of people want to get back on the Elliott bandwagon. IMO it wouldn't hurt to release Free. He has Real Love out but that isn't just him and plenty of artists have more than one single at one time.

I guess it depends on whether they've got the infrastructure currently to support a radio push and whether they currently have some money they want to put into such a push, doesn't it?

I, personally, have always felt that Alright or Free should be released, because I'd like to see him hit radio with an uptempo song. But with a new album slated to come out within six months, I kind of doubt they'll do it now.

Why did he pick it to perform on AI then? He could have picked anything he performed on AI or even One Word but he chose Free. There has to be a reason he picked that to perform since it is on the album. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Well, from your lips to Hickory's ear, Mike! I'd love to see it, also.

I Love Elliott - April 17, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
I know alot of people that went to his concerts, as well as my own personal view.........said that his LIVE performance of FREE was just "amazing".

Maybe he had been visiting the E-Train and had read our posts.

Mike, that song means a lot to Elliott is why he chose it I believe. The words mean a lot to him. That's why he added it to his set list for the second leg of the concert.

He's performed that along with OW and WFY on AOL Sessions, JCC Forum, and the JDRF Gala.

He must have anticipated that people would want to hear it and buy it after Idol. At the very least, Hickory should release the single to iTunes and give it appropriate placement.

ohioguy45780 - April 17, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
I think the intent WAS to have three singles, but after OW failed to achieve, they probably reconsidered. Singers perform non-singles all the time; part of promotion.

BTW, since last night, "FREE" has become the 4th most popular song off the general release CD at iTunes...after WFY, MO, and OW. I've been watching-- it rose 2 spots beyond ASFY and YATO.

merrr - April 17, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
^ Interesting, OG! My YouTube videos of "Free" have also had a lot more views than usual :)

alienhamster - April 17, 2008 04:13 PM (GMT)
"Free" is definitely one of the better songs on the album, but I honestly can't see how it would work as a single. What format would play it? Also, practically speaking, it costs a good bit of money to set up single promotion, and it doesn't seem like the return on the investment would be all that high.

I thought he chose it last night because they had very little time to do anything other than something he's rehearsed very well. Plus, it's a perfect song to honor his mom. JMO, of course.

luvthatelliott - April 17, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
Well the Richmond radio station that played it this morning thinks it IS his new single = at least that's how they made it sound anyway.

I agree.

yellin4yamin - April 17, 2008 05:55 PM (GMT)
That song would work good for so many things..and radio would be wonderful;) I have always thought it was the PERFECT song for the Olympics, or The Biggest Loser...something like that. Anything to keep that word spread!!

I think he chose that song to honor his mom..and Amanda Rhea, plus it is a very uplifting song for this point in the AI competition. That is JMO though!! ;)

itslate - April 17, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
A few of the radio stations I listen to play such a mix of songs from alternative, to hip hop, rock and pop... I just don't know where or how to categorize music today. Maybe it's my choice of stations... but sure it would fit.

LilRedDevilLizzy - April 17, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
MAybe he was just wanting to do something new...sure there is probably a reason but we'll drive ourselves nuts if try to dissect everything...not everything has a motive..

luxrocks1 - April 17, 2008 06:41 PM (GMT)
Whether he releases it or not as a single, I'm just overjoyed that it got the exposure it did on Idol last night. And being on the same show as the current number one artist on the charts (Mariah) is a tremendous bonus! Free has always been my pick for single release, I was hoping he'd release it instead of One Word, but alas, it did not happen.

Many new fans will come from this performance, mark my words! Those tuning in to see Ms. Carey will discover the best male vocalist of our time and hot foot it to their nearest store to get the CD!!! :rocker:

SoulMusicRocks - April 17, 2008 06:59 PM (GMT)
I would love if he did. It has a groovin' beat and great lyrics to go along with it. Plus more CD sales!

lindagt - April 17, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
I don't think releasing it as a single right now would be helpful, because it would cost money to promote it. They are working to release another CD in a few months -

Also, Free is one of my favorites off the album, but it doesn't really fit into a radio genre, it's primarily an inspirational, motivational song.

I agree with Harley - the lyrics fit into the theme of Idol and they mean everything to him right now. He still got the exposure and that's what counts. If things go as planned, radio will start playing Real Love in a couple of weeks - and will keep his voice on the airwaves while we are waiting for the next cd.

(There's always the possibility that Elliott will release a single off the new CD before it is released too)

v4Elliott - April 17, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Personally, I think he should start fresh with the new single from his next album. If he intends to release it before the year is out, we'll have a new single in the next couple months...and hopefully a few teasers too.

I like 'Free'. It's actually one of my favs from the CD. But, I'm not sure what radio format it would fit into...

wowhesgood - April 17, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
But can't we just for fun speculate? I really doubt anyone here thinks this poll has any merit but it just allows us to enjoy the excitment and joy of seeing Elliott perform again last night.

ITA...that's part of the fun for me!

Speaking of CD sales, I just checked Amazon.com and he's on the "Movers and Shakers List", up 340%. :hooray: :hooray:

Yes, it's at 354 now.

desertstargal - April 18, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
It had very good reviews today after last night's AI appearance - I think that it would be a MUST DO - to release it. Now that people have heard it once and saw him perform him there will be an instant connection and recognition of the song. It can't be anything but good for Elliott.

merrr - April 18, 2008 02:13 AM (GMT)
Screencap, in case it changes:

Elliott Yamin - Up 302% - Sales Rank in Music: 364 (was 1,466)

I don't think Free should be released as a radio single and I doubt that is the plan. It is not a radio-friendly song IMO and given the time and financial committment involved in fully releasing a radio single, it just seems highly unlikely to me. I think all of E's resources are currently going into his next project.

My guess is that they had booked Elliott on the Idol Gives Back show and he wasn't ready to get on stage yet, so they allowed him to perform last night. I think that's why he had performed Free as that was probably what he was rehearsing, given inspiration night.

I think we can still be excited for Elliott that he was given that high-audience stage by AI.

Given that he's still in the middle of working on his new material, I doubt he's ready to showcase any of his new stuff yet, so he sang a popular inspirational song from his first CD. At least he had some exposure between projects.

ramblerg - April 18, 2008 09:00 AM (GMT)
I think "Free" would be great as the Idol send-off song instead of the current "Celebrate Me Home".

But perhaps the slower acoustic version, especially the way Elliott polishes it off like he did Wed. night.

EYaminCDaughtryfan - April 18, 2008 01:58 PM (GMT)
Yes! Please release Free

Elliottfan27 - April 18, 2008 09:09 PM (GMT)
Most definately release it as a single. I think it could be a hit. I think it is Radio material.

jmc4e - April 19, 2008 01:09 AM (GMT)
I Love Elliott but I really don't like that song. I even left it off the copies of my CD.

:chloe: :chloe:

CathyEM - April 19, 2008 01:15 AM (GMT)
I voted "yes" but think I should qualify it -- if he is able to distribute the song electronically (e.g. inexpensively), at least the radio stations would have it available in case they're getting lots of requests. Doing a big promo push or radio tour right now is probably not the best use of his time and money.

craxymonkey - April 19, 2008 01:55 AM (GMT)
is there something in between?

it would be wonderful if he like sang it through radio interviews like he did w/ WFY, but actually release it, no way, but maybe release a music vid.. yeah that'll be cool.

partly no b/c its almost like one word, it can be cheesy at times, especially when you listen to it too many times

yes because my friends like the song.. and um it is an inspiring
song..

oh and i can't imagine it having a radio edit to it...

ohioguy45780 - April 19, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
I noticed they were playing it in Wal-mart yesterday while waiting (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting) at the pharmacy.

SoulMusicRocks - April 20, 2008 12:14 PM (GMT)
As someone posted upthread, this is more or less just fun speculation. It probably would not happen. Especially if he is releasing his sophomore album in the summer. Won't we be getting a single from that album soon?

PoorMe - April 20, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
The last interview I heard he said a fall release now. I don't know how far ahead of time they will release a single from an upcoming cd. Anyone?

usually no more than 6-8 weeks ahead of a new CD release. See the new Madonna "4 Minutes" single and the latest Mariah. However, I've seen singles come out 4 months ahead of CD release, so exceptions occur all the time.

I wonder if he got rights to put CYFTLT on the 2nd CD release, as well?
