According to my notes, the song peaked at #13 on the US Hot 100 back on August 9, and held that position for 4 weeks.

I hope he's not only making millions of new fans but also millions of $$$'s. All this economy scare stuff makes we want to see somebody doing well and who better than the man with the most beautiful voice in the history of the world.

As we always knew he would be!

But, once again, faster than I ever expected. Three years ago, he was still bagging prescriptions and hadn't even gone to the first tryout for Idol. Amazing.

MOMster - May 30, 2008 02:02 PM (GMT)
AMAZING! just curious - where did he peak on the US Billboard charts?

AMAZING!  just curious - where did he peak on the US Billboard charts?

Wasn't it 13 on the overall chart?

(and 5 on pop, 4 on AC?)

Or am I thinking about the wrong charts here? I believe the 13 is the comparable one, but I'm not sure.

ETA:
Furthermore, while Elliott was climbing from the ninth spot to fifth, Madonna, who entered the chart at about the same time, was dropping from 7 to 11. Other westerners near the top of the charts include Jason Mraz, who went from 28 to 14 this past week; Sean Garrett, 30 to 15; and Usher, who fell from 19 to 20.

Leona Lewis fell from 13th spot to 23rd -- Take that, Simon Cowell and Clive Davis!

PoorMe - May 30, 2008 02:12 PM (GMT)
Yes, 13. It's in my first post, right below the image.

WFY stayed at number 4 for several weeks on Pop. It made it to number 3 for a few days but it was back to number 4 when the chart closed for the week.

Oh, yeah, now I remember that brief shining moment of # 3 on pop!

It's very rare for a Western artist to sell in quantities that compete in the upper end of the chart with local Japanese records.

I think Avril Lavigne's last album was No. 3 nationally in Japan for 2007 and that was really rare.

But Avex is really into the younger part of the market; they gave contracts in the Nineties, I think, to Chic, Cheryl Lynn and other well-known R&B artists who couldn't get signed in the States. Also they have been big in the dance area. Traditionally, Japanese money has also supported jazz for many years, as US major label rosters and budgets got smaller.

It might be a bit cheesy for Elliott to record in Japanese himself, but I think one very viable remix idea would be to get a Japanese rapper who does dancehall-style toasting to rap a breakdown in WFY or any follow-up single.

Wow at Elliott's success in Japan! :hooray:

Great News!

alienhamster - May 30, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
Great news! Is Japan the first international market they've tried to market to yet? I always wondered why WFY wasn't charting in other countries, cause it's in that Backstreet Boys zone of songs that seem to go to the top in most countries.

Do we know if WFY charted anywhere else? Maybe South Africa?

jamie50 - May 30, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
This is fantastic news. Has the song/album been released in Europe because I think it could really do well in England and Germany.

Last year, it was #1 on the yearend chart of Magic 89.9 and #2 on the yearend chart of RX 93.1 (two of the most popular radio stations in the Philippines).

I don't think many people have seen this... it's a video of when "Wait For You" was announced as Song of the Year on Magic 89.9, last New Year's Eve :)

Incidentally, several of Elliott's songs have been picked up by radio over here... we're still hearing "One Word" and "You Are The One" on certain stations. They played his Christmas songs last holiday season. I even heard his version of "Sharing The Night Together" on the radio one time, and did a major double take! :)

And I am so pleased that he is being embraced by the Japanese music scene. :)

SkiddlyBop,

Thanks for all of the info on AVEX.

I like your brainstorm idea too.

Japanese fans tend to be loyal for decades.
Karen and Richard Carpenter (the Carpenters) are still well loved there over 30 years after their debut on the Japanese charts!
