Elliott Yamin – big in Japan!
By mruggieri@timedispatch.com(mruggieri@timedispatch.com)
Even cooler is that “Wait for You” is the number one single in the country – over Madonna and Usher. Elliott also plans to release the album in Taiwan and China. Most of his time lately has been spent up in the studio, ...

That's cool! So happy he is so very successful internationally!
Crazycate - June 6, 2008 11:28 AM (GMT)
Good for him. I was in Japan last summer just around this time and was hoping to see something of his album or anything. Wish I was there now to rejoice!

Great news :cheerleaders:
I am wondering what charts they use to get the numbers from.
yellin4yamin - June 6, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
since Elliott is so "Big in Japan" I decided to add that song by Alphaville to my myspace profile...lol;)
I am just so thrilled for Elliott. No one is more deserving!!!
Now, if only the rest of the country smartened up and bought more of his music instead of Madonna and Usher HERE!!! He does have the vocals to beat any of them! :)
imthesame - June 6, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
Everybody loves Elliott - as my husband says, "what's not to love".

Really makes you wonder what the difference is, doesn't it?
Is it just that the US-label-hype-and-payola machine is cranked up much harder so that nothing ever gets played that doesn't come from the big companies, or what?
I still think that if Americans got past the hype and the radio-ear-worm songs they, too, would see Elliott's superiority, but the promotional setups don't seem to allow that to happen -- for anybody, not just Elliott, of course.
chloewannabee - June 6, 2008 12:49 PM (GMT)
WOW!!!!! I know WE all believed in him, but who'd a thunk!!!
This is just so wonderful for Elliott. :chloe: :chloe: :chloe: :chloe:

I think the difference is that in Japan, Elliott is being supported by a major label (I think.) His deal in the US is indy and he's been responsibile for all his promo.
If Elliott had put out the same album with a major behind him, he would have sold more albums just because of the additional promo. Water under the bridge, but 19R really blew it by not signing him. A couple of hot singles or a duet with a major artist and this would have been a platinum album.

AWESOME!!
:rocker:
It was only a matter of time before the world caught on to what we already know!

I believe I read here on the train somewhere, that Avex is an independent label, also. I'm not really sure where to find that, but I'll look around.

Can someone please post the charts where WFY is #1? In the latest charts in Billboard dated June 7th, WFY is not in the top 10. However...
The album chart also dated June 7th, has the album (called Wait For You?) debuting at # 7

That's weird. Someone posted the Billboard album charts and WFY (the album) was at #8 but the single was not in the top ten of the Hot 100 there. It gets pretty confusing between airplay, downloads, etc.
Whatever the numbers, Elliott seems to be doing great in Japan.
Taratova - June 6, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
Super Star Elliott Yamin. International Star Elliott Yamin. No surprise. I know he is a SuperStar in the making. Elliott's Star is shining bright!! How thrilling!! Shine on Elliott!!
We should have a Superstar Emoticon with a big E in the middle to post!

And I've seen another page where Elliott's at 11 this week. That seems to be the Hot 11 Singles. Usher's now up to #5 on that list.

I looked up iTunes (Japan) and the album is #9 and the single is #14. .
The charts appear under Home
Under Pop (Genres), the album is prominently displayed at the top (it takes turns w/other artists) and under "What's Hot".
The album is #1 and the single is #3!!! :elliottelliott: :rocker: :elliottelliott:

I was thinking the same thing as you. If he had had a major label behind him who knows what would have happened. But Elliott wanted artistic control and more share of the profit and although he has to work harder, he is doing it his way.

So so true. Hopefully, a hot new duet will be part of the second album. I heard he was working with Janet Jackson?
alienhamster - June 9, 2008 05:26 AM (GMT)
I still hope Elliott gives major labels a second look after he finishes up on this second album. I'd like to see how well he does when he gets a chance to explore some of their connections to songwriters, studio pros, others celebrity collaborators, and top level promotional teams. For one, I think it will be WAY easier for him to land appearances on TV and to break into radio with fewer barriers (if he gets good material.)

...Yamin is happy to finally be in Japan from where he receives a lot of fan mail. American Idol has become one of the Fox network’s most popular shows in Japan, airing every Saturday and Sunday at 8pm. The grand finale of Season 7 will air on June 15.
Yamin says he still watches the show whenever he is home in LA. He enjoys watching other contestants go through what he went through with host Ryan Seacrest and judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. When he was on, Cowell disliked his group, Abdul said it was a good thing he could sing because he couldn’t dance, while Jackson liked him. “I’m lucky I didn’t get ragged on too much,” he says. “You definitely have to develop a thick skin on that show. I’ve gotten to know Randy pretty well. We’re good friends and keep in touch...” |
