ramblerg - June 26, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
Thanks jamie!
I think a documentary film of Elliott in Japan and the Philippines would be really cool considering the huge embrace he's received in both countries.
Sk8888 - June 26, 2008 02:40 PM (GMT)
This is great news!
Thank you for posting.
LilRedDevilLizzy - June 26, 2008 06:35 PM (GMT)
This is awesome news!! I really hope he sells those 25K soon..
ohioguy45780 - June 26, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
does anyone know the album's highest rank in Japan? How about for the WFY single?
PoorMe - June 26, 2008 08:28 PM (GMT)
For Billboard Japan Hot 100 Wait for You reached #5.
yamignonette - June 27, 2008 09:48 AM (GMT)
Wow. This is great news. Thanks for the update, jamie. :)

I really had no idea that Elliott is really doing great in Japan. Just look at this article:
| QUOTE |
Artists like Yummy Bingham who never came out in America have product in stores there. And singers like Kierra "KiKi" Sheard, Sean Garrett, Elliott Yamin and others are megastars in Japan . |

For Ohioguy: I think WFY (the album) made it to #8 on their overall album chart. They also have a separate chart for international albums.
I'm trying to get the numbers for the WFY (the single) but all I know is that right now it is #39 on iTunes in Japan and it's been a top seller there for about five weeks or more.
blossom - June 29, 2008 03:07 AM (GMT)
Under Pop the single is # 7 and the album is # 6 at iTunes
KittyloverforElliott - June 29, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
I am impressed with how you can find all this information so quickly. Thanks so much. It is exciting to hear that he is doing to well.

between U.S., Japan and the Philippines sales, the album has sold at least 600K worldwide, if I am correct.

I'm sure he has. 512,000 in the U.S. and now 84,000 in Japan. That's 596,000 right there. So he's almost certainly gone a ways past the 600,000 mark! :rocker:
jamie50 - July 3, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)
There's actually a worldwide sales chart which has him at 650K or something but I'm never sure that its for real. The US and Japan numbers are both counted by Scantron so they're for real. I wouldn't doubt sales in other countries have the album in the high 600,000 range by now.
I wonder if they certify based on shpments in Japan. He's pretty close to gold already. I wonder what other Idol contestants have a gold record in Japan.
Kelly Clarkson, for sure but who else?

Oddly, Kelly's Wikipedia entry doesn't record Breakaway (or the others) as achieving gold in Japan. Hard to believe, given some of the chart positions they show, though. They show her with gold and platinum in a bunch of other countries, however, so perhaps it's accurate.
I wouldn't be surprised if no other Idol has gone gold in Japan. Country isn't going to do it, and it seems that most of the Western artists who sell well there are R&B or pop, and not a lot of Idols in those genres have had major sales, even in the U.S.
Daughtry doesn't show an official Japanese release, so he's out.
Could this possibly be another Elliott first? (I'd be surprised if Kelly hasn't sold at least gold, but I'm too lazy just now to look beyond Wikipedia.)

I second your sentiments. It's exciting to see E's album be so well-liked in Japan. Hopefully more nations will hop on the Etrain as time goes by :chloe:

I wonder of the debut album can surpass Taylor's worldwide sales (which I think is about 800K total, with 700K coming from America, I think, so he sold about 100K worldwide)?
It's definitely great to see E so successful in Japan. He's probably one of the most successful foreign acts there right now. Imagine if he had the same amount of promotion there as he did in America, we'd probably be talking multi-platinum.

Well, they've only just started international releases, and it's certainly doing well so far.
And I think I heard him mention that they're in the process of arranging release in Taiwan and in China? Since it seems that, with the Philippines sales, he may be in the top half of the 600s already (and still going in Japan), that a couple of more countries would definitely put him over 800,000, doesn't it?
I like the way they're just patiently working to build a base and a foothold in as many areas as possible. Seems like a good long-term strategy.

Maybe the strategy is to build this worldwide fanbase so there will be more of an impact when the second cd is released?
jamie50 - July 4, 2008 09:22 PM (GMT)
Wait for You should be released in Great Britain where they love r&b. I'm surprised they haven't already done that (unless they have and it made no impact). Maybe the success in Japan will make it easier to crack England and the European markets.
Worldwide album sales. net
has this estimate for the album 653120 but I have no idea how often they update.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering, too. Would make sense, wouldn't it?
On the other hand, maybe the international releases mainly happen when they manage to work out a deal with a record company. I'll be the international rollout of the second album will be quicker, though.

sugarfree - July 5, 2008 07:27 AM (GMT)
Wow, those are some nice figures, considering he's on an indie label. It's still doesn't get old, considering he's not on a major support! I hope he'll be released in other countries as well, it will be so awesome to see. They have to touch those countries too, and if it will be a hit, hopefully it will be in time for his second album and they'll release it asap.

# 53 - Single
# 80 - Album
Under Pop:
# 8 - Single
# 19 - Album
The album is still displayed under What's Hot and in the Heading under Pop.

Japanense iTunes must really rank them by the hour. You can see the album at 96 and an hour later it's 50. It's pretty weird. I don't think US iTunes works that way. For some reason, the singles chart seems more stable.

I was assuming they had to work these countries piece-meal because Elliott's team is relatively small compared to the big labels, who can somehow push songs like Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" in like 17 different languages simultaneously all around the world. Elliott's doing most of his own promo, and since he hasn't developed time travel or spatial displacenemtn abilities (yet), he's had to do this one step at a time. Just a theory, of course.

Totally, totally agree about the U.K. Plus, they show American Idol over there, I think. "Wait for You" totally sounds like a song that the U.K. would like, and I've been wondering why it never took off there.

I had my fingers crossed that when Elliott did his USO Tour that maybe some stops at UK Radio would have happened. I wonder if TRP needs to do a deal with a local UK company, similar to what we've seen in Japan?
