Discuss your thoughts about Da Vinci Code here. Is the book good? Is the movie worth $9.50?

I enjoyed the book. The movie on the other hand is a different story. It's a matinee movie and not a full price movie.

Why do you think this? Is the book considered fiction or do people actually believe its message?

I enjoyed the book because I very much like mystery/thrillers. I don't necessarily believe everything that the book says but some parts of it amde me question a few things. I'm not the type of person who will believe everything he reads. I took the book for what it was. It's a enjoyable, fictional book that had held my interest throughout. As for the movie, I thought the casting was off and I didn't enjoy how they changed characters, who died and lived, the ending of the movie and most of all I didn't enjoy how they added scenes that were unecessary to the movie.

I really enjoyed the book, too. I consider it fiction. It is an interesting read.
I haven't seen the movie yet, they aren't playing it in the theatre in my town (because it is controversial). So, I'll have to wait until it comes out on video or go to "the city" to see it.

I liked the book a lot but the movie was bland. I suppose those who have not read the book would like it because they wouldn't know what was missing or what was changed. I would not buy the DVD, but I wouldn't mind watching it again if it were on TV.

Ummm....who pays $9.50 to see a movie? I'm shocked. I guess it depends on where you live...?

I highly recommend the book, it's an excellent read - very gripping and thought-provoking. It's fiction, so you shouldn't necessarily believe everthing you read but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth behind it.
As for the movie, I suppose it doesn't meet the expectations of avid readers of the book. I've yet to seen a book-based movie which truly did justice to a book I loved, but I do try to keep in mind that a movie has very little time to convey the plot and themes of a book and hence it usually appears rushed and often important parts are left out and unneccessary bits thrown in.

If you read the book, I would also recommend reading Breaking the DaVinci Code by Dr. Darrell Bock.

Never read the book.. the movie was alright.
A bit boring and longwinded in parts but overall it was a decent movie.

You pay less or more than $9.50? I also pay $9.50 and it is expensive. One exception is when I lived in LA. I go to Arclight Theater a few yrs back, and the seats were assigned, like you are watching a play or a musical.
I loved it, and it was worth the $14.00 (I think that was the price).
dtrowbridge - May 30, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
Well, I loved the book as well as his other works, Angels and Demons, Decision Point and the other one about the NSA. (blanking on the name right now! darn it) He certainly weaves a good exciting ride into a bunch of facts.
The movie was better having read the book and knowing the details that were left out. It is rather true to the book with a few exceptions. and I like the characters, T Hanks did a great job.
The concept is facinating although purely fiction based on some rather interesting forgeries in the past. I agree you should read a DaVinci companion book which tells fact vs. fiction on a more intellectual level. History is facinating to explore, but don't get lost in the fiction. Enjoy it, but don't buy it until you do some research.
Yeah it is worth the money!

I thought the book was amazing. Sounds like I will just have to rent the movie when it comes out on DVD

OMG, I forgot about when I lived in LA...yeah, it's more expensive out there. Here I can go to the movies for $2 during matinee (in a NICE theater), or for $6-8 during "rush-hour"...yeah, Texas is definately cheaper (thank God!)

The book is amazing, and the movie does complete justice to it. It's a bit long because they obviously couldn't cut out many parts because it's a mystery novel, but it was definitely worth it in the end.

I haven't read that one. How is it? I'm reading the "The DaVinci Deception" by Erwin W. Lutzer. I've just gotten started. Need time alone to read it and not always easy to get.

I'm going to be reading the one I suggested and DVC this summer. But from what I have read (reviews and professors) it's supposed to be really good. Dr. Bock also did a debate in NYC with other professors about the book. Pretty interesting. Anyway, another book to read after reading DVC would be Truth and Fiction in the Da Vinci Code with Dr. Burt Ehrman (a critic of evangelical faith).

But don't watch the movie, it's really bad. The book is really good though.
