For those of you that are into the theory that E sang this song as an F U ALL to the producers and such, I submit to you this image from performance night:

This is his motion/body language when he sings "I think I'm gonna have to use my rod"- now, I think he was just wiping sweat off his hands, but, as I said, if you like thinking this song was an F U to the prods, then this pic with the lyric is clearly saying "No really, F-Off"... I like to think that...

I didn't think it was possible to have one, but this is officially my favorite eTune! It is the truest testament to E that his eFans should be proud of. Plus it's one funky, groovy tune. I hope he covers this on his first CD, because he does thing so much justice! Go, Elliott! Can't wait until your career soars outside of Idol. B)

Oh no he was not wiping sweat! He's never done that move before.

He was showing some attitude.

Oh, no...I agree that he was NOT wiping the sweat from his hands. That is a move he has never done before, and I think that it...and the song's lyrics...were a direct "I don't give a damn!" to the American Idol machine. I believe THAT to MY soul...and no one is going to convince me otherwise. :P

And that was one amazing performance, wasn't it?? He was confident, sexy, and out there with it all...I have to say it's my favorite Elliott song and performance right now and I would LOVE it if this was on his first CD.

Janizzle - May 19, 2006 04:01 AM (GMT)
When I first heard him sing it, I was totally not getting it....but after multiple views I can't get it out of my head. Elliott is a genius!

SylviaRebecca - May 19, 2006 04:22 AM (GMT)
Here is what I don't understand...

I watched that performance completely enthralled...totally diggin' the sound, the moves, the look, the whole thing. I thought..."WOW!!!! Now that's what American Idol is all about!!" I had downloaded the song on LimeWire when I heard Elliott was performing it (by Ray Charles...couldn't find the Donny Hathaway version there) and hated it...it seemed so dull and blah that I had been a little afraid of it. But what Elliott did with it was incredible!!!

And this song didn't wow people??? Casual voters didn't hear that song, that jazzy, soulful vibe that Elliott gave it and think "Man, he can sing!! He should SOOOOOO win this thing!!"??? How is that even possible?

I really don't understand it, honestly. I think it was the best performance Elliott gave, even better than "Trouble"...and even the judges didn't like the song, even Paula??

Whatever...

I am so proud of him for doing that song despite the fact that they all tried to talk him out of it, despite the idea that it was too esoteric for American Idol viewers, despite the fact that it may have cost him the competition. And I also love the lyrics and "the move", which I somehow believe were a subtle "who gives a damn" to the whole American Idol machine.

You rocked it out with this song, Elliott...and congratulations for going out on your own terms!!

I'm not a music fanatic, so I believe to my soul did not appeal a lot to me. I could tell Elliott was singing fantastically, but the melody and rhythym seemed a bit choppy and weird...

However, when he sang it last night as he...left...I totally got into the song. I'm sorry it had to be in such circumstances though...

Edub - May 19, 2006 05:31 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the links! I'm trying to make cd's for my co-workers who are just getting aboard the E-train or who have already been on it :)...

I think E was sending a message- he's definitely a smart guy, he just found a subtle way of doing it- awesome!

LoveTheCatskills - May 19, 2006 11:00 AM (GMT)
Wednesday's nights I Believe To My Soul was outstanding. Looking for a link to Wednesday nights. I am by no means a music critic or understand any technical aspects of music I just know what I enjoy and what touches my soul. Elliot's performances have touched me. My family thinks I maybe a little obsessed with his music lately because it is all I have been listening too. They can't believe that I actually want to go to an AI c oncert. Hopefully I will be able to go to AI when they are at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY.

An Elliot fan - forever.

nikobie - May 19, 2006 11:45 AM (GMT)
Elliott said in an interview that he wanted to introduce people to songs they may not have heard/liked before

another goal accomplished, Elliott

He did that with IBTMS...didn't like it at all Tuesday night. That may be due to the two previous songs Tues as much as anything.

To emotional to like it any better Wed nite.

Watched again last night, and LOVED IT! Hmmm...at the top of the list of songs he sang for me. And watching everyone respond to it was even more fun.

SylviaRebecca - May 19, 2006 12:04 PM (GMT)
Well, I guess I really AM one of those "different drummer" types, because I was seriously excited watching Elliott do "I Believe To My Soul" Tuesday night. As soon as the music began, and I realized it wasn't going to sound like the Ray Charles version, I watched it breathlessly...and at the end of voting rewatched it several times before going to sleep. Picked up the MP3 the following morning and burned it (and several other Elliott songs of course!) on a new CD, which hasn't been out of my CD player since. I think it was his best, sexiest, most emotional performance of all...I seriously LOVED it and haven't stopped yet.

I thought 'I Believe To My Soul' was AWESOME! E put his heart and soul into that song, and it was a sexy performance. Some people criticized the song choice because they felt he should have picked a more familiar song, but there's a reason he chooses relatively obscure songs. Here's what he said in his interview:
QUOTE
Did he deliberately choose obscure songs to sing? "I did it because I can relate to being a person coming from relative obscurity myself and having overnight success from the show. I know it's good to sing songs people know and that are modern and that people can relate to and are familiar with, but at the same time, that's what deterred me from picking those types of songs. I wanted to give people a taste of something different, help them fall in love with different songs. And they're just songs I enjoy singing."

Plus, E had no regrets over his song choice. :)
QUOTE
Does he regret choosing "I Believe to My Soul" as his song choice? "No, I don't. I knew all along people didn't like it. People with the show didn't like it because it wasn't that popular of a song. Everyone from the executive producers to Clive Davis told me I should really consider the song choice I made and just understand it's not a modern song... but that's why it was my choice. It's a fun song to sing. Anytime I get to sing a Donny Hathaway song, I'm happy. The other two songs the judges and Clive Davis chose for me weren't necessarily songs I would have chosen for myself, but I had to do what had to be done. I did it to the best of my ability. I have no regrets about that. I'm more proud than anything that I followed through with it and made it this far. That I followed through with anything in my life."

I really agree with you here. I love this song and had never heard it before Elliott's performance. Since then I've heard - and love - the Donny Hathaway version which sounds very like Elliott's version. I'm going to have to listen out for Ray's now. :D

Oh, and I really respect Elliott singing a song that meant so much to him...and sending a message to his fans and AI at the same time - I loved that.

i truly believe to my soul that elliott did that song as a sign that he knew what they were doing. i read where he said they encouraged him not to do that song but he said it's my choice. i love him even more for that

IBelieveToMySoul - May 20, 2006 03:39 AM (GMT)
I love this song so much. I think it just may take over "Home" as my favorite because he did it so well and he didn't care about everyone telling him not to pick this song. He stayed true to himself with "I Believe To My Soul" and he excelled though most of America disagrees.

*sees pic of E*

Wel, his gf came on ans this ques . was asked and she said that it was chosen because Elliott always loved that song and in an interview he said whenever he had a chance to sing some Donny Hathaway that was what he was going to do and did not regret the song choice .

I sure agree that the words to that song sent that " I know you are shafting me " message to AI , but I really think he just loved that song - ahd he made us love it too . Wrong again , Clive - Elliott knows a lot more about what he should sing than you do - Open Arms ???! Yes, he did a great job on it but there were about a million better choices that had the name Elliott Yamin inscribed all over them !
