Title: Computer Locks Up On This Board

keen5 - May 30, 2006 04:22 PM (GMT)
[FONT=Times][SIZE=7]My computer locks up everytime I come to this board. I've asked people over at the "Idol" boards and some have said the same happens to them.

I am registered, but never post anymore, because of this. Is something wrong with the site? It only happens on this board.

Thanks for any responses.

Are you on dial up? When i use my pc on my dial up account sometimes it does this...when i am on DSL or cable it does not.

That could POSSIBLY be the prob. But hopefully a mod will be more specific for you.

I have DSL. But thanks for the response. I've locked up at least 6 times today alone. I love this board, but I don't know if I can keep hanging in there, if this keeps up. I would think it was my computer, but it doesn't happen at any other site. Plus, others have said the same happens to them.

Ironically, it has locked up on me about three times since i responded to you and i am on high speed. So...there definitely must be another issue.

HOpefully a mod will see this and answer, as now i am wondering too.

I have never had this happen to me. It could be a browser related issue! You could probably try firefox (its what I use!) :)

lothlorien - May 31, 2006 01:23 AM (GMT)
as mvemulap has already stated, it could be your browser. try using mozilla firefox or opera to open this site. if it still freezes up, you could try disabling some of your display settings. try turning off the "Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics?" option on your control panel (it's under Board Setttings). hope this helps.

I use Firefox and I have never had any trouble. It's a great browser!

Edub - May 31, 2006 02:52 AM (GMT)
I've used firefox, avant, and ie and all continue to freeze up on me-- it happens randomly... usually when I click too fast--- it may be when a lot of people are viewing a thread? I am on DSL as well.

I've actually gotten the crash less when I access this site by using

www.etrainforum.com

it re-directs you to this site... let me know if you find anything out-- the locks are driving me nuts!

keen5 - June 1, 2006 06:51 PM (GMT)
I've tried different things and it still does it. I posed this same question over at the "official" boards and some of them have expressed the same problem. I've also seen it mentioned on the Yaminions forum.

It has to be a problem with this site. I have no problem anywhere else and have no virus.

mars_mg - June 2, 2006 12:18 AM (GMT)
it locks up for me as well... it takes me a couple of tries before i get into a forum. sometimes, I'm lucky... most of the time, i'm not.

i'm dsl as well.

Peggoty - June 2, 2006 08:43 PM (GMT)
Happening to me all the time. I haven't been able to post to a lot of stuff 'cause it freezes up and I've tried everything. I'm using high speed at work and DSL at home. HELP PLEASE!

keen5 - June 5, 2006 12:56 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm glad others have responded to this thread. I guess no one in charge knows what the problem is, or how to fix it.. :(

yamingirl - June 5, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Sorry I didn't realize nobody had actually responded to this thread. I've done so via PM a few times.

I am going to research the issue but a couple have had success turning off their zone alarm so if you're running that, give it a try and see what happens. Once we know what is causing it, it's easier to troubleshoot! :)

I am going to try turning off my "zone alarm" and see if that works. I have an interesting situation because one of my computers freezes on etrain, the other doesn't. However, PM's always work. I will post here if I figure out what the problem is...

Peggoty - June 5, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
Ok, seemed to be working rather well when I switched to Firefox, able to post for a few days without problem, but happening again.

Where is this Zone Alarm you speak of?

ZoneAlarm is a firewall. You may have another type of firewall on your computer. Check it out. I for one would not turn it off. But you may want to check your settings on your firewall to allow this site.

Gogo - June 6, 2006 12:54 AM (GMT)
My reply just froze. So I used the "back arrow button" on my computer and it took me back and my post was there. I haven't had this problem until today.

mars_mg - June 6, 2006 02:05 PM (GMT)
i now use mozilla firefox and it no longer freezes... :D it's even faster!

Thanks. I wont turn it off. Will try using mozilla firefox.

Ok, don't want to jinx it, but I am using firefox and it seems to be working. :cheerleader:

[SIZE=7]A friend of mine that is really good with computers and websites said you should seek some help from Invisionfree to help you figure out the problem.

She also said, "The owner might have extra codes in his layout that could be slowing the site down.
I noticed a lot of people include banners in their messages and this too can be slowing the site down.
You might want to try turning off graphics when you view that site and see if it helps."

That is true: some sigs and avatars are .SWF files. Everyone should make sure they have the latest version of Flash in their system. If not, you will wait and sometimes not be able to load a page, simply because the file is not supported by your outdated version.

CHECK FLASH VERSION

If you do not see a Version number anywhere, download the latest one here:

UPDATE FLASH

The advise to "change browsers" helps only because that "working" browser may have a good install of flash (no bad files, plugin files are in the correct directory). As with any plugin, if all else fails, uninstall and reinstall.

The invisionfree servers are housed in a very robust NOC facility, it looks like. Not that we don't get heavy network traffic at all, but they can handle a lot of data transfer = very fast.

I checked that and I'm all good there. Thanks for that information. Unfortunately, there is a problem here, somewhere.

I have no problem until I click on the thread titled "The Man" or "The Music." I freeze up instantly.

I think i have figured out the problem, at least for me. The forums that are in the most use and at peak times are when they lock. The Man forum this morning had HEAVY traffic and kept locking while forums that were not heavily viewed did not lock.

Try checking back a little later if you are freeZing up or a less trafficy forum and see if the amount of viewers might be doing it. For me, i do think that is the issue that i have been seeing.

Instead of going into a forum click on "view new posts" or "today's active topics" that seems to work for me.

I do that too yoli, but for some reason not all new responses to threads since my last check shows up...i know as i will go into each forum and see posts that did not yield in that search.

Not sure why that happens, but you are right looking that way does help with the locking.

My computer at work and at home lock up everytime I access this site (and I'm using IE), so I decided to try the Opera Browser today. I downloaded a free version and installed the software. Voila! It works!!

I know, I sound like a product endorser. lol! But it frustrates me whenever I want to read a new post and my IE hangs up. IMO, Opera is easier to use than Mozilla Firefox. Try it if you don't want to miss a thing!
