Title: Getting Rid Of Headaches
Description: Your remedies?
Medellia - May 31, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
I used to drink at least 2 cans of Coke every day. If I didn't have my first one before 10:00 in the morning, I was sure to get a headache for the rest of the day. I went cold turkey on sodas at the beginning of March and had terrible migraines for about a week, but afterwards, my headaches were completely gone.
For the past week I have getting the headaches again, even though I still don't touch soda (I only drink water now, no juice, coffee, tea, etc.). I don't understand why I am getting headaches and I don't want to keep taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen because I don't want to depend on medication. I eat okay and exercise every other day or every 2 days. Does anyone know what should I do??

Could it be your vision? or maybe a back/neck issue? I am a frequent migrane sufferer also. :glomp: I also seem to get them if I wear a visor...

ooh, i think those might be it. I have bad vision in one eye (all because of a stupid baseball, lol) and I have back problems too. But little things offset my headaches, like wearing my sunglasses on my head, high heat, wearing my hair in a ponytail....

I had the same problem with Coffee too but I realized that the headaches in my case were more due to lack of breakfast and not 'cause I didnt get my coffee fix in the morning :) ... Advil Liqui Gels work though ;).

The sunglasses on the head will give me one also just like wearing a visor does. I take Excedrin for the really really bad ones. Otherwise I try to stay in a dark quite place until it goes away :(

I get a terrible headache if I wear my hair up in a clip all day so I feel your pain, Medellia :(
elliottcrazy - May 31, 2006 10:19 PM (GMT)
Well sometimes the chinese acupressure works for me.
I apply, very firmly, my thumbs, in an upward postion, in the corner of my eyes just under the brow bone..starting from the nose out towards the temple. Slowly slide the thumbs along those areas under the brow bone & you'll feel relief.

I'VE BEEN GETTING HEADACHES FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS. I THINK MINE ARE STRESS RELATED. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING OUR HOME AND BUYING ANOTHER ONE. I HAVEN'T HAD A HEADACHE IN A LONG TIME. ADVIL LIQUIGELS OR MOTRIN WORK FOR ME.
elliottsbabe - May 31, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
Excedrin works wonders on me.
I know what you mean about not having to depend on medication. Especially since Ibuprofen and asprin can tear up your stomach over an amount of time.
Try listening to some Elliott :D. That might work and soothe out those headaches.

I actually don't want to take any medication at all. I've been taking acetaminophen since I was a kid and then ibuprofen when I was a teenager. For awhile I think I was addicted to them.
Maybe I'll take you up on the Elliott suggestion....

Anybody have a remedy for a headache that's in your eye? Yeah, I'm serious. I think it's because I need new glasses, but I get them from time to time. They really hurt. I don't take any type of medication unless directed by a doctor. Anyway, let me know, thanks!

Gee, you seem to be describing my headaches too!!! However, I think mine is tension and stress...any suggestions for that?
ElliottsTheBest - June 1, 2006 07:42 PM (GMT)
Headaches are the first sign of being dehydrated so I just drink a glass of water when I have one and Poof! it's gone.
Cheetah521 - June 1, 2006 07:44 PM (GMT)
I get migraines all the time, and i usually take Excedrine migraine, i was prescribed something a while ago but i cant remember what its called, even if you dont have a migraine, i'd try taking excedrine....the only other thing i know, is dark cold rooms... :(
also, i sit in front of a computer all day, and that doesnt help any, frequent breaks help a little bit with that. :)

This is a great topic for discussion because headaches, I think, are the worse pain ever. If you're weaning off of caffeine, the pain is even worse. I can hardly walk because my head throbs so much. Taking an anti-inflammatory like Advil/Ibuprophen, Advil Liquigels, and if you have the good stuff like Vicodin or Norco that's even better. (Be careful not to rely on these because it's bad on your kidneys and liver.)
Sometimes I'll just have a small cup of coffee and that seems to get rid of it quicker. Other times, I've found a cold shower or a cold compress to your head works too. But the biggest thing for me that causes a headache is dehydration/not drinking enough water or skipping meals.
Good luck.

Don't take Fentanyl, it is killing people over here in the Detroit area. :thud:
brwneydgirl - June 2, 2006 06:07 AM (GMT)
I get terrible headaches/migraines from time to time. Mine are mostly due to neck/back/shoulder pain and tension. I try to just take Advil liqui-gels, but a lot of times, the headaches don't go away for a couple of days. Sometimes I have to take Excedrin - Tension Headache, but I try to avoid doing so. I don't take in a lot of caffeine on a normal basis, so the Excedrin which have caffeine in them, really make me feel like my heart is going to pound out of my chest. So, if I have to take them, I just take one Excedrin with some food or milk so it doesn't make me feel as out of control.
I also try heat or ice, or both...anything just trying to get rid of the darn headache. Hot showers help sometimes, and I've even noticed that the blow dryer can help. One time I was drying my hair, and I had an awful headache, but I guess the heat on my head kinda helped. It felt a lot better afterwards.
Sometimes aromatherapy helps, too. I have aromatherapy bath and body works products, and sometimes they help with headaches. I've been dealing with these for awhile now, so I've learned to try anything.

do you know what scents are the best?
btw, thanks everyone for the suggestions. I haven't been on the board too much lately because of the damn headaches.

Well I don't know any remedies that don't require medication....
I usually just pop 2 tylenol and that will do the trick after a while, but if I'm having a migraine I'll also take 1 naproxen with the tylenol and it will usually get rid of it.

I use an accupressure trick too.
If the headache is on the right side of your head you squeeze the skin between your thumb and index finger on your left side for about 30 secs to a minute and repeat if you need. If the the headache is on the left side of your head squeeze the right hand. It really does work. You can also squeeze the skin just above the heel of your foot (lower back ankle) for pain relief.
**********But be careful...this can cause contractions in pregnant women so please don't do this if you are pregnant!

Well, I don't know if Bath and Body Works still carries the stuff or not, but it was called Bergamot Coriander. It came in lotion, shower gel, sugar scrub, and a spray. They used to sell a balm to rub on your temples, too, and I think it was called Headache Relief. Like I said, they may or may not still carry these items. If not, maybe try another scent. A lot of places sell aromatherapy candles, too. I think you just have to use trial and error to see what helps you individually. Sometimes those things help me, and sometimes they don't. It depends on the severity and type of headache.
Good Luck to you. :alright:

Could it be sinuses? Try Sudafed.

If you saw me on Sudafed, you would laugh. Half an hour after taking it, I start shaking from head to toe and then I try to run up walls! My heart beats so fast that it scares me. After that, I completely crash from exhaustion. So...no Sudafed for me either!
My head was feeling pretty good today though, I think it's because I didn't spend as long as I usually do on the computer!
rnnana2 - June 3, 2006 09:19 AM (GMT)
I used to get migraines .Long times at the computer can definitely trigger them. Also the ponytail aggrevates it.I couldn't wear sunglasses sometimes either. Watch your foods. Triggers are cheese, wine(red),MSG(like in chinese food), these are the worst culprits.Nitrites in hotdogs are also a factor. The only thing that would help me once it started was a dr's prescription. Get your eyes checked though, that will help.
Scurvous - June 3, 2006 09:43 AM (GMT)
If you've ruled out
1 Physical causes (glasses, hats, tight hair style)
2 Visual problems (computer, need glasses)
3 Psycological causes (stress, noise)
4 Dietary causes (Msg, sulphates, nitrites, etc)
5 Dehydration
6 Physical causes (muscle tension)
Consider certain pathogens (viruses, mold, food alergies, household products).
Then you migh look at your overall health. I know it sounds cliche, but try a light, balanced breakfast with a multivitamin. Exercise regularly (cardio, stretching, weights). Those basic steps work as sort of a cure all for me. When I don't know exactly what's wrong, often getting in shape just makes it better.
If that doesn't do it, I'd say go to the doctor. But I sure would't be popping pills on a regular basis. I use that stuff as rarely as possible.
Athena610 - June 3, 2006 02:48 PM (GMT)
Try this please!
When you have a bad headache when you are at home -- fill your bathtub up enough to cover your feet with only cold water and stick your feet in the water for a few minutes.
Works every time for me and others have tried it and says it works as well.
Let me know!!!!
Medellia - June 3, 2006 05:25 PM (GMT)
my headaches have been gone for the past couple of days so thank you all for the suggestions. i'll keep them in mind when the aches come around again.
CathleenSusan - June 3, 2006 08:42 PM (GMT)
I get tension headaches and sinus headaches, and I found that ibuprofen (advil etc) works the best. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflamatory - so I think it is suited the best for headaches.
erulesyo - June 3, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
they have a pain reliever that you just roll on your head. It may be worth a try.
