Interview #1

Hello Elliott

ELLIOTT
Hey Man, how’s it goin?

Congratulations on getting this far

ELLIOTT
Thank you very much, I appreciate it

Reporter
Um, I would like 2 reactions from you.
#1- When you saw the 3 percentages on the big screen each about 10 feet high, what was your reaction to
A- the oh so slight disparity and
B- where were you thinking that you fit into the mix?

ELLIOTT
Well, I just uh, I thought it was really flattering to be involved in such a close, tight-knit race. And I just knew, I had that intuition that my name would be attached to that 33.08 or whatever it was at the bottom and I was prepared for it, you know? So it was easy to take in and to grasp. And it was a lot easier to make peace with that, just knowing and having that feeling. And I was prepared for that so..

And in last nights show “You Had a Bad Day” montage reminded me of Simon’s comment to you and wondering what your immediate reaction was when he said “Potentially, you are the best male vocalist we have ever had”
When he first said that, how did it hit you?

ELLIOTT
It hit me like, Wow I can’t believe he actually said something that awesome to me and at the same time a lot of people around the country, media wise and friends and family, they all failed to realize that he did use the word potential. And I’m the kind of type that I always feel there is always room to grow and room to get better. And about the fact that he said potentially, I had to remind everyone really quick, not myself because I heard what he said, but I had to remind a lot of people very quickly that he was talking about potential. And that’s a good thing, you know? I’m used to be labeled as the kid with a lot of potential and I feel like I’m reaching that every day that I live. I’m getting close to that and I’m trying to reach that every day.

Plus he said it so early on in the competition to give you something to strive for.

ELLIOTT
It definitely gave me something to strive for. And to word hard towards and to. I didn’t look at it as this big pressure box that I had to live up to. I just felt like Hey, you know, there’s a lot of work to do and I wanna make sure I do that to stay around as long as possible.

Hey, Congrats man

ELLIOTT
Thanks a lot man, how you doin?

Reporter
I’m doing well, I can’t imagine there was a dry eye in the room last night or in our living rooms for that matter. Um, why were you so emotional and why do you think your story touched so many Idol fans?

ELLIOTT
Man, I don’t know. I’m emotional anyways, it kinda runs in my blood, in my family. You know, maybe because I’m an underdog. Maybe I was seen as the kid that came from nowhere. I guess, people knowing my story and knowing where I come, I guess they know that maybe I’ve beaten a few odds here and there and I think people can identify to that, they can relate to that. It’s real, it’s who I am, it’s who I genuinlly am. It’s how I’ve lived, it’s in me. And the fact that I had to opportunity to share that with millions of people, it’s just amazing. And the fact that I was able to realize my talent and validate my artistry, It just doesn’t get any better than that. I think that people just respect that. It’s a good feeling. It’s a lot of lot of fun to touch so many people and inspire so many people without trying. Just doin what I love to do.

That’s awesome man. Um, can you share with us maybe one sort of, uh, backstage or behind the scenes or secret or something that you wouldn’t have known went on or something like that. That you didn’t know before you gone on the show.

ELLIOTT
Something that I have experienced that I didn’t know would…?

yeah yeah 

ELLIOTT
Um, let me see….All right uh…..well, I don’t know if I am allowed to say that.
Let me see um…ok, here’s a little something. I don’t know if it is a juicy as you want it to be, but.
When you’re watching the judges on TV and you’re wondering why they’re not looking at the performer, they’re looking down? They’re looking down at the monitor. On that judge’s table, theres 3 monitors, 1 in front of each judge on the table there. And what appears on that monitor is what appears on TV. So, they’re basically watching what America is watching. And Simon is really, he’s really infamous for that, for looking down a lot. He just wants to see how we are being portrayed on TV in front of America. So, if it looks as though he’s not paying attention or not listening, that’s not the case. They’re always looking down at those monitors. Not always, but when they’re looking down, they’re looking down at those monitors just to kinda see how we come across in everyone’s living rooms.

Hey Elliott, how’s it goin?

ELLIOTT
Great, how you doin Amy?

Reporter
Great, well Thank you. Speaking of emotions. Paula gets very emotional over you. She’s cried a few times and last night at your hometown clip package.
Why is there such a strong connection between you and Paula? Has there been things she’s said to you in the past to kind of establish that connection?

ELLIOTT
Um, you know, I don’t know. I think she just loves my voice and enjoys my singing and she just likes me as a person and the feelings are mutual. She’s just a sweetheart, man, she’s been a joy to be around. And we’ve had some good talks after the show and on stage there. She’s just, what can I say, man, she’s loveable, she’s likeable and she’s got a big heart, like I do. And that’s probably why she identifies with me, cause she can relate.
Cause she’s very big hearted and we’re both Jewish too. You know, us Jews, we kinda have a bond at birth. (laughing)
I don’t know if maybe that had something to do with it.

Reporter (laughing)
Maybe so, maybe so. And then, you have a girlfriend, Amanda, correct?

ELLIOTT
Correct

Reporter
Are you engaged to your girfriend? Or are you about to get engaged? Is that something you are looking forward to?

ELLIOTT
No, I’m not engaged.

Reporter
Is that on the horizon though? 

ELLIOTT
Um, you know, I don’t know. They asked me that when I went back home. Apparantly that was a rumor. That’s not the case, no ma’am. But we do have a great relationship and looking forward to getting back to her arms. Sooner than later, it’s only gonna be a while because we start our tour. And we start rehearsal very soon. So, there’s really no rest for the weary.
