mizlynn - June 5, 2006 12:31 PM (GMT)
The first book I ever read was Gone With The Wind (at the age of 9). I was curious as it belonged to my Grandfather. After the first chaper, I was hooked and somehow was able to finish the thing.

I don't remember if it was the first one i read, but my older sister was borrowing all the "Famous 5" books by Enid Blyton from the public library and i was reading them after her. They are mystery books about a secret team that a bunch of kids create, to solve mysteries happening around their town. I totaly recomend them asr a gift to young kids (that enjoy reading)

I read the kids book when I was a child. The first real book I ever read was "The Giver". I think I was 7 or 8. I love that book. :D

I'm a big fan of mystery/suspense thrillers. The 1st book of this genre I remember reading was Mary Higgins Clark, "Where Are the Children". I was13 I think.
I can't reacall the 1st book I ever read , in general, but I remember LOVING the Amelia Bedilia books & Super Fudge, as well as the Little House on the Prairie stories.

Wow...I can't remember!? I'm sure it was something to do with Dr. Seuss...LOL! My earliest books were varied, and I can't remember one in particular...but the first novel I read (I think, but am not sure) is the Color Purple or something by Stephen King...*mind is blank*

Hmm, I don't remember the first novel I read. I love reading, but I don't make enough time for it anymore. I think the summer between 5th & 6th grade I read every Fear Street and Baby Sitters Club books available. I was obsessed with those.

My favorite books are To Kill A Mockinbird, Where The Red Fern Grows, and Where The Heart Is.

Trip56 - June 8, 2006 12:35 AM (GMT)
The first one that I can remember reading is The Boxcar Children. I later bought the updated series for my kids. I can also remember reading a book called Honestly, Katie John!, but I can't remember which one I read first.

I was thinking of some of the first books I ever read...I remember the Boxcar Children...I loved those!

I cannot believe this! Another "Box Car Children" fan! I wanted to be them so BAD. The first book I ever read though has to be the Bobsy Twins, what else? I did learn to read quite early, as did my brother. We learned to read by sounding out words in the Bible and in books of poetry. My family used to read both aloud quite often besides other books outloud like "Black Beauty", "Happy Joe", "My Friend Flicka", "Laddie" and "Girl of the Limberlost, "Red Badge of Courage." All sorts of other classisc.

After learning to read, I read everything under the sun particularly biographies of famous people because I wanted to know what is and how to be a human being. I loved every single Louisa May Alcott book and read them dozens of times, particularly "Rose in Bloom." Heidi is my all time favorite book and I still have my dog-eared, much beloved copy. I loved the Brothers Grimm and lived in those fairy tales. I loved the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and all the Wilder books. I loved "Lucreita Ann on the Oregon Trail", in particular. We had a set of Child Craft, we loved and also a set of the Harvard Classics. These are all books I read before age eleven.

After that I branched out because my Mother worked and after school I lived in the city library (a very safe place at that time) until she got off work. I used to just trail down the book shelves and pick out books by their titles and how long they were--I hated getting lost in the world of a book and then have it end to soon. Believe it or not, just by chosing by title, I read most of the classics of literature and such strange things as "Stories of the Opera." This led me to ask the librarian to let my listen to operas and read along with the libretto...I do not know if I appreciated the music then, but boy what a learning journey. Sometimes I would just browse a volume of the encyclopedia. I still have a couple of sets of encyclopedia by my bed so I can reference what I am reading. I do love that lateral learning: starting at point a and following the winding path through history and biobraphy and science and back again. In this fashion I was able to learn contextual thinking, and even contextual feeling.

I have to say that all this reading made it nearly impossible for me to adjust to traditional education--or it to adjust to me. Fortunately, I found a number of sympathetic teachers who let me go my own way whether it was biology, chemistry, math, history, art, performance arts, or writing.

Even after all these years, at age 58, just rouse my interest in any subject and I obsess on every aspect of it in every single direction that I can image--this is the only thing I really love about the Internet, it lets me satisfy my need to learn and to KNOW because it is nothing more than that great big, wonderful, warm and safe library where I used to spend my afternoons.

Grew up reading Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Bobsey Twins.
Also remember getting a several volume leather bound (!) set of Greek Mythology as a 9 year old kid for my birthday. Loved that.

We support our troops in this household and are VERY proud of this generation of young men and women serving: they are the leaders of the future. I am so impressed by the military right now, this is an important fight we are fighting and it is grueling at best. Again, with appreciate...our thoughts are with you and your family.

Well, the first novel I remember reading is 'Are You There God? It's Me Margaret' when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I loved all of Judy Blume's books.

:hello: I started reading very young...the Bobbsey twins, Trixie Beldon, Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Louisa May Alcott.
The first adult novel I read was Angelique by S. Golon. Read the whole series. At age 10, this was pretty risque reading. Thankfully, my mother never censored my reading.

Has anyone read Why Have The Birds Stopped Singing? by Zoa Sherburne?

I love that book!

I honestly cannot recall what the first one was...........I started reading really young (my folks traveled a lot and I rarely had playmates—I read whatever I could get my hands on).....however there are a few books that I recall being incredibly important (still are) dating back to my days as a wee lass—I assume it was after we moved to Tucson, because that was the first time I had regular access to the library:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Little Women
Pride and Prejudice
Sense and Sensibility
Emma
Oliver Twist
Great Expectations

But I also recall some that many of you have noted:
All Judy Blume's books, which I still get a kick out of, and Nancy Drew.

Kavla - June 15, 2006 02:25 AM (GMT)
I was in 7th grade and our English teacher made us read "Wuthering Heights". All my friends complained, got crib notes, etc etc. I was embarassed to tell my friends but I absolutely loved it. I've read it probably another four to five times since then (I'm 49 now). And actually, I bought a pocket size version of it from Barnes & Noble recently.

The second novel I ever read was "The Stand" by Stephen King. I've read that a few times too!

MistressMerr - June 15, 2006 11:49 AM (GMT)
Don't remember the first novel I read, but the first book I read end to end all on my own was Dr. Seuss' Fox in Socks. My mom gave it to me and refused to help me with any words, making me figure it all out on my own. It took about a month working at it every day and I was 4. There was this one page about cheese trees that I got so frustrated with.

ETA: No, I do remember my first novel now. Piers Anthony, the Vale of the Vole.

Wahntchre - June 16, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
The first Children's book was "Morris Mouse goes to school."

Then I read the "Boxcar Children" in first grade. Twice.

Yeah, I went to catholic school and Judy Blume's Wifey and Are You There God..., were passed around on the sly. Iggie's House and Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great were also great books.

Around the same time I read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The book is so much better than the movie.

Then the Star Wars books and Splinter of the Minds Eye(also Star Wars)

Wow, sounds like we had the same parents...I also had all of those books, including a set on Greek Mythology!! My father was Greek, so if you grew up in a Greek house you had to know the culture too.

I also still have alot of my old Little Golden Books from when i was little. I saved them and read them to my children when they were babies. Also had the Laura Ingalls Wilder series and the Tin Tin books.
