Title: '80s Memories
Description: what things do you remember?

luvE - May 20, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
Anyone else ever feel like totally nostalgic for the '80s? For some reason, today I started thinking about my memories of my childhood in the '80s: the music, the toys, the clothes, the hair styles, the games, the snacks, the TV shows, etc.

Some of my '80s memories:
my cabbage patch dolls
Frogger on my atari and Super Mario Bros. on my Nintendo
my horse-themed trapper keeper
shirts with geometric patterns and tails on the back (oh, the horror!)
MTV
Michael Jackson's Thriller album
trying to do the moon walk
roller skating to Madonna music
New Kids on the Block
the Hair bands

I could go on... anyone else want to share their memories?

luvE - May 20, 2006 01:03 AM (GMT)
wow, I just realized that I'm really dating myself with that list. (good god, maybe I'm the oldest person here?)

cat09 - May 20, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
No way are you the oldest one here--in the 80's the only thing I remember is changing diapers on my 3 boys...they had me so busy the entire decade just flew by

Outofmymind - May 20, 2006 02:00 AM (GMT)
Oh boy now you touched my heart.

What do i remember from the 80s....

--------------------------------------------------
Spending all my allowance on the arcade games

My introduction to computers and computer games with my cousin's Amstrad 464

Black Box singing "Ride on Time" and "Fantasy"

Lisa Stansfield singing "All Around the World"

Phil Collins singing "Another day in Paradise"

Scorpions

Gary Moore

Karate Movies (used to be a big thing back then)

Chuck Norris, Silvester Stalone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Galactica

Star Trek

Fraggle Rock (Duh!)

McGuyver

Little House on the Prairie (I was totaly in Love with Mary Ingals)

All my experiences from Elementary and Junior High

Making my own Fire Crackers (God knows how i didn't lose a hand)

Christmas time

My BMX

Summer camp.

Falling in love

Feeling careless.

My first childhood friends (we've lost contact now)
--------------------------------------------------

80s still remains the favorite decade of my life... Maybe because i was like an eager sponge absorbing everything new and great my life had to offer. Maybe because i was innocent and i thought the world was basically good all around me. Maybe all of the above.

luvE - May 20, 2006 02:22 AM (GMT)
(Outofmymind: I really like the quote in your signature. It was especiallly poignant for me because I've been spending a lot of time contemplating my career path--but that's a topic for a different thread...)

favorite '80s TV shows:

Different Strokes
Facts of Life
Little House on the Prairie
Knight Rider
Hunter
Cosby Show
Who's the Boss

Family Ties (still love the theme song... **starts singing to self..."what would we do baby, without us...'cuz there ain't no nuthin' we can't love each other through, oooo-woooo, what would we do babeee, without uuuussssss, sha-la-la"** ah-hem...

Welcome Back, Kotter (sp?) -- can I name all the sweathogs... Freddy Boom Boom Washington, Ahhnold, Epstein (my fave), Vinny Babarino (sp?), am I missing one?

(I watched a lot of TV back then)

Now i have to steal some of yours. I hope you don't mind. (i completely forgot TVshows)

luxrocks1 - May 20, 2006 03:15 AM (GMT)
Wow! Moved to Oregon at the end of 1980 when I was turning 12! ET was the first movie I saw out here on the west coast!

Lots of memories going to the local skate rink and skating the "All Niters".
How about off the shoulder sweatshirts, stirrup pants, flourescent colored clothing!

Or, DEF LEPPARD! Pyromania was my favorite album!

All, how can they possible call 80's music "classic rock"? It wasn't THAT long ago, was it? I mean, just because this year is my 20th high school reunion, doesn't mean I'm old, does it?

Ginger88 - May 20, 2006 07:25 AM (GMT)

SheilaHI - May 20, 2006 08:23 AM (GMT)
Duran Duran! Waiting for the release of RETURN OF THE JEDI, major crush on Harrison Ford. Slight Star Wars "geekazoid" status, even today! :rotfl:

Watching cartoons... 80's cartoons were THE BEST EVER!!!

All of my toys, cabbage patch dolls, barbies, My little pony, she-ra, Jem, etc etc

Racing to the radio and hitting record when a song I liked was on heh.

Being a skinny kid *sniffles* I miss being skinny lol

My dad having a ton of odd jobs, his best was when he worked in this small arcade. He'd give me and my brother free tokens to play :D

aaaand etc etc...

Trip56 - May 21, 2006 01:03 AM (GMT)
Here are my major 80s memories, mostly great, but 1 horrible one:

1980 - my dad died of a heart attack
1981 - I got married
1985 - my beautiful daughter was born after I'd suffered 2 miscarriages
1989 - I finally finished my Bachelor's degree in nursing

And all through the 80s I listened to great music - Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Prince, The Time, P-Funk Allstars, The GAP Band, The Isley Brothers, Grover Washington, Jr., etc. I could go on and on. Can you tell I like R&B/Jazz (with a little bit of funk thrown in for good measure)?

Oh, and I forgot Wham! I loved me some George Michael!

Kimmi - May 21, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)

Big hair and big chunky earrings, flourescent pink and green, cut-up sweathirts, shoulder pads... somethings should be forgotten

Yaminized - May 27, 2006 02:25 AM (GMT)
I had a pair of parachute pants. And I had jelly shoes (those were terrible).

My mom got me a Cabbage Patch Kid the year everyone was fighting over them (isn't she cool?). We were into Garbage Pail Kids, too. My brother had Transformers and He-Man stuff.

One thing I remember that no one else seems to remember (maybe it was just local) was these little plastic charms. I still have them, actually.

I remember listening to "Thriller" on the radio while rollerskating on the driveway. I remember wearing neon colors. And I remember Madonna when she was a virgin. :)

Ha ha, well, she must have been at some point, even if it was just the day she was born. And Michael Jackson used to be black, too. What happened with that?

I remember the Challenger thing. My class was seated in front of a TV so we could watch it, and it was sort of awkward when it blew up...I'm in Houston, and in the Clear Lake schools, some of the kids' parents were on there, and they were watching in class. That's ugly.

Oh, I had a scooter--like a skateboard but with a handlebar. And there were some great sitcoms on then.

asilscrap - May 27, 2006 07:25 AM (GMT)
Lisa Frank stickers, sticker books, anything Hello kitty . . . jelly shoes, Izods with the collars up, Aquanet hair spray

thedragondiva - May 27, 2006 04:20 PM (GMT)
Reading all these posts are making me even more nostolgic. I hit my 20 year high school reunion at the end of July. I am sure afterwards I will remember even more things from the 80's. LOL. Time flies by so fast.

Well, I was born in '84, so I'm more of a 90's kid, but I do still have memories from the 80's. One main thing (and I know this is weird!) are those t-shirt tie things that we put on our t-shirts at the corner. Why we did this, I have no idea. Anyone remember the name of those things? :dunno:

fivfteven - June 1, 2006 02:37 AM (GMT)
Gee, I feel old. Growing up in the 80's didn't seem that long ago, until you look at everything from games to tv from back then! OMG! Too funny!!!
