Title: "A Song for You" as a single?
Description: your thoughts?

alienhamster - May 20, 2006 07:58 AM (GMT)
Hi all . . .

SO glad we have this forum now.

I've been thinking about this for a bit on my own, and then I saw an older Entertainment weekly review (I think?) that suggested this, too . . .

Do you think Elliott's version of "A Song for You" could make it as a single? I *really* think it could, to be honest. A lot of people aren't familiar with the song to begin with, and it's just so beautifully done by Elliott. It seems cross-overy enough to me. (And I can imagine re-mixes already.)

Your thoughts?

I would love if we could help make this happen somehow. It's already his signature song, so I think he should go for it.

Hey AH~ Dulce here!

Yeah...ASFY could be a single and in fact, would have been a better choice for the AI5 CD than MMFL. But at least ASFY can be done without the craptastic arrangment of MMFL.

I think ppl actually know ASFY again thanks to Elliott singing it. I think he should save it for his album, whenever that may be. Depends on who owns the rights to the song though. Hathaway was not the author so who knows? The song is very top 40 friendly...very very very. I think though, part of the magic was the way El performed it...you could tell he believed it and felt it and breathed it and that's why it worked. I'm sure that same magic can be recreated in the studio.

Anyway, I think we should let Elliott field out and look at all of his options for recording first. Davis is going to pass, from what I understand. Amanda even said that El's contract will be up in August, so then he can shop around for a deal that suits him. RCA doesn't suit him at all, so it's a good thing, no matter how disappointed we all may be. It's better to wait for a good label, release a solid niche CD, and be respected as opposed to releasing something fast and fizzing out later. I'd wait on pushing for single now or ever. Just let fate take its course and it'll all work out the way it was meant to.

That would be AWESOME! :woot:

I think he could as well, it is indeed his signature song. Sigh, I loved how they put together all the different versions of ASFY in the farewell video *gets emotional again*. But yeah, his ASFY performance gave such a HUGE boost to Doony Hathaway's CD sales, remember? So I think that's an indication that it will be a success.

I'm waiting for the day that Elliott is able to cut ASFY with producers who "get" him and keep the arrangement simple because the power of the song is in Elliott's voice. The AI folks keep overwhelming his vocals with too much background noise.

I'm going to buy it the millisecond its out on sale.

KrazeeK120 - May 20, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
I think ASFY would be an amazing single. It's kind of "Elliott's song," you know? I'd buy anything he records personally!

dulce - May 20, 2006 07:57 PM (GMT)
:) ASFY Is the best song that he did, IMO. People know that song now, huh? People know who Donny Hathaway is again (our generation)...El did what he set out to do in more ways than one.

miyagimayday - May 20, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
It will be a MAGA HIT!!!! :thud:

elviselvis - May 20, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
I would totally buy it. in fact I can't wait for E's Cds. Just heard his "broadway" on the radio. E-dub sounds so awesome.

trbldbysquirrels - May 20, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
i just want an entire album...

greedy of me? fine. but you know what? one song is just not going to cut it for me.

Cinny_72 - May 20, 2006 10:06 PM (GMT)
I would absolutely looooooove "A Song For You" as Elliott's single!! As awesome as all of his performances were... I think this has to be my absolute *favorite* by him, followed very closely by "I Believe It To My Soul", "Trouble", and MMFL. Elliott definitely made this song his own and I too think of it as his!! I want a whole CD from E too... I know I'm greedy but I would love if we could have it SOON.

cat09 - May 20, 2006 11:39 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah, that would be sooo delicious

Edub - May 21, 2006 12:44 AM (GMT)
I can imagine a single... a 30 sec. acapella intro and then piano only the rest of the song... but it may be better if we wait and get it on the first album.

Amunet - May 21, 2006 02:31 AM (GMT)
I would LOVE IT if Elliott did it again and released it. As a matter of fact, I've been singing that and MMFL all day long.

I had never heard the Hathaway version of ASFY when he performed it on AI, but I was familiar with the Carpenters version. I liked E'S version much better and also agree it would be a "breakout" single for him!

LOTR Fan 71281 - May 21, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
That would be great but I'd rather have him sing a Donny song that he's never sang, I'd choose "For all we know".

SylviaRebecca - May 21, 2006 10:43 PM (GMT)
I would really love to have him sing the full version of this song, and maybe, since it is so close to his heart, he will be able to include it in an upcoming CD or single. I really hope so...I'd love to hear what he'd do with it!! His a cappella versions are so gorgeous, and the way they all blended together so seamlessly in his "Going Home" package just impressed me to no end. What a vocal talent...I still am so overwhelmingly amazed at that much talent coming from an untrained, deaf-in-one-ear, karaoke singer!! WOW!!!

S0x_PRiSoNeR - May 21, 2006 10:52 PM (GMT)
A single... omg that'd ROCK!!

sgrc2001 - May 21, 2006 11:04 PM (GMT)
Oh Yeah! :woot: :thud:

I wouldn't mind if it were replaced with MMFL on the AI5 CD. I can only listen to mp3 of the live version which Elliott performed on AI, and that is the PERFECTION!!!! I believe ASFY has an appeal to broader listeners than MMFL. Personally I like MMFL better than ASFY though.

elliottcrazy - May 22, 2006 01:19 AM (GMT)
Elliott's ASFY is the first rendition of any song that has moved me to tears. My local radio station would have played it but they wanted me to find out about licensing right & such like...?? Now, the CD is out on Tuesday they can play MMFL to their hearts content...legally.
ASFY single would be & should be the cornerstone of Ell's career. Every artist has 'a' song,, & ASFY is that song for Elliott.

ucanhavmycake78 - May 22, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)
He HAS to know that everybody LOVES that song now.... so yes, he HAS to make a single of it... maybe have Kenya Hathaway and Deb (the vocal coach) do the backgrounds

chercat - May 22, 2006 01:59 AM (GMT)
I love that song - always chill inducing and it is probably his most passionate performane . Well, he put a lot of passion into Trouble , but it was a different type of passion .

His admiration for Donny and love of that song is very evident in the way he signs it - I would love an Elliott CD of Donny Hathaway covers or Motown classics - HEAVEN!

jensolo5 - May 22, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)
This song is seriously a great song done by him. I had never heard it before and now it's like one of my favs, his version of course. I would buy this in a heartbeat.

Ditto. Elliott does this song magnificently. he needs an arrangement that will let HIM shine.

I love, love, love ASFY, but the song I'm really starting to fall in love with is "Knocks Me Off My Feet". What week did E sing that? Can someone help me out?

elliottsbabe - May 22, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
Christina Aguilera has an AMAZING version of ASFY. I love it.
