Title: Death To Smilies, Emoticons, Faces
Description: NO MORE!

Bluebomb - July 12, 2006 10:01 AM (GMT)
To offset the very colourful thread of smilies, I'm going gothic and ethereal with this thread. Feel free to hate on smilies like the.. thud . gif or bunny . gif

Rules: No use of smilies allowed in here. If so, I will lock and ban you out of this thread.

H-bomb - July 12, 2006 10:13 AM (GMT)
I'll take you up on the chastising...

When I see a smiley I feel like this guy -> :madashell:

And I want to do this to the person who used one -> :2guns:

I wish all smileys would just do this -> :restinpeace:

Because I would express the sentiments of this character -> :woot:

Chastise away!

H-bomb - July 12, 2006 10:24 AM (GMT)
Are you ostracizing me? That's so harsh... I don't think I can control myself...

I think, I think I'm gonna do what this guy's doing -> :bawl:

When I'm done, I'll go follow this one -> :bye:

And do this, for kicks -> :bathing:

I honestly wonder what Elliott thinks about emoticons? Would he ever use one in a message? Hmmm...Somehow I just don't see that happening, nor BP. But, I ask you, how could you not wuv a widdle wed choo choo twain?

EY_Forever - July 12, 2006 01:11 PM (GMT)
You know what I noticed is that Elliott seems to have an affinity for using the numeral '4' in place of writing the word 'for' in his autographs. This was also on his programme dedication piece. I think I will begin to do this as an homage to him. :)

Bluebomb, that smiley was 4 you.

Hmmm...using the number "4" could reveal an underlying sympathy for smilies, in my view. Interesting point!

Janizzle - July 12, 2006 02:21 PM (GMT)
Other than the regular colon-and-a-parenthesis (left or right) combo, I really don't like using smilies. There are just too many for the picking. It's like...I would end up spending so much time trying to find just the right emoticon when it'd be much quicker and more substantial to just write what I'm feeling. Besides, isn't the "Good posting" emoticon just really lazy?

Funniest thing is there's an ad for free smilies at the bottom of my page.

EY_Forever - July 12, 2006 02:31 PM (GMT)
I blame everything on MTV. Video killed the radio star, after all. It was when people stopped using their imagination to visualize what a song is conveying--and, instead, being forcefed whatever video treatment the singer chooses for his/her song--that we've all succumbed to being a visually-driven society. THat is why smiley's exist. Hence, death to you, MTV! Death to you!

p.s. Thank you MTV for featuring Elliott on TRL. :)

That last line grossed me out. It reminds me of a mom pinching her son's cheeks and making googly-eyed faces.

And Sharonburr, you are hereby, locked, BANNED, and lasered out of this thread.

GypsyNFla - July 12, 2006 04:12 PM (GMT)
I'm not real crazy about smilies either, especially when so many are used in one post. But sometimes I think a smilie works in the place of just saying it.

Looking for some of them takes too long lol

ETA: I don't use signatures or banners either since it just takes up space. Banners are more of a pet peeve than smilies, although they look nice, it slows down the page load, just like big pictures. I'd go on the pic threads more often, but if my son is on the computer at the same time as I am, he yells "what are you doing out there Mom," then his computer runs like a slug. I gotta get him more RAM lol

DoxieChickLuvsE - July 12, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
I have noticed a lot of younger people LOVE smileys, some older dont (but this does not apply to all). I am on the side of older and preference is somewhere right down the middle. Women also seem to prefer smileys to men. But these are just generalizations not the rule.

I am personally not a smiley overuser unless I am in a very campy goofy mood with my young cohorts in the cheerleading thread or similar threads. It depends on the type of post.

I am usually a one smiley per post person, or none. I do LOVE the asst of smileys avail here tho. I think that is cool. SOmetimes a strategically placed and chosen smiley can enhance a post.

dtrowbridge - July 12, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)

Very astute...I am a Mom. And I do that to my son who has THE most pinchable cheeks. Aren't you glad we are on internet?

I also want to say that I thought smileys were created as a substitute for seeing the person's facial expression...to avoid misunderstandings? Like right now, for example, I bet you can't tell that I am bulging out my eyes and making a fish-face.

I'm surprised, but yet not, that you have launched an attack on the dancing bunny and the cheerleader, but somehow don't have a problem with the dancing banana
