Title: Wikipedia Watch

fabb - July 16, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
Awhile ago, I placed Wikipedia's Elliott page on my watchlist. (I'm one of the volunteer editors with a username on the "history" tab).

One of the things I have edited is the URL for Elliott Fan Sites under "External Links". Originally, someone put in a results page for the search keywords "Elliott Yamin Fan Site" which did NOT show ETrainStation listed. As a revision, I entered the Yahoo Entertainment Directory's Elliott Yamin page. The popularity rankings change continually. Note that Yahoo has the alternate URL indexed (z4.invisionfree). ETrainStation management can probably submit this form to Yahoo to change the URL, if they so wish.

The reason why each fan site is not listed separately on the "External Links" portion is explained by the following set of directives on the editing section:
<!--Note to editors:Only one fansite is allowed per page. Please do not add any more.-->
<!--Duelling fansites removing each other's entries is one good reason to limit fansites.-->
<!--Yahoo! list of fan sites should suffice. The search engine ranking is based on which fan sites get hits as well. -->

If anyone has the time to run a fine-toothed comb through the whole article, kindly post edit recommendations here. It's important that the article be kept unbiased, up-to-date and accurate. I'm talking as accurate as Bublé - not Buble. Of course, feel free to edit directly, but make sure you provide a short explanation of the edit.

Wikipedia's popularity always places it on the first page of results and probably one of the first things read by someone researching - or new to - Elliott. It is a worthy project for us. Whoever got it started did a great job; let's make sure we keep it well-organized and informative.

Thank you!

Edit: friggin' grammar. Why does it sound worse the second time you read something?

Thanks Fabb! I'll get Lothlorien to look into it. Wikipedia is an important place, and to have an accurate listing about Elliott is wonderful.

So many times I have read a Wiki entry and wanted to click that edit button, but I never do, so offering a chance to indirectly edit and fine-tooth combing stuff is something I'm not going to pass up.

One thing that bugs me to death about Elliott's entry is the inconsistent italicizing of "American Idol." But I do have a couple more, one to correct a quote and one recommendation.

First the recommendation. The sentence "On May 18, Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor praised Yamin in remarks on the floor of the House.[8]" needs, IMO, clarification that Eric Cantor is a U.S. Representative from Virginia, not a member of the Virginia Congress and that his statements were made on the floor of the United States House of Representatives, not the statehouse. (I'm a stickler for federalism...)

Then the quote. After Elliott's performance of Elvis' Trouble, Paula's exact quote was "this was your best performance ever in this competition," not the best performance.

Other than those, at a glance, the article is as you say it should be: unbiased, pretty well written and up to date.

Thanks for the invitation!

Yes, this is exactly what's needed; thank you, xzasporated1!

The inconsistent italicization may be accidental. Quotes to italicize the word must not be entered manually, as encoding relies on platform or browser. It should be done using the Wiki WYSIWYG tools.

I did the first round of editing, including your recommendations. My edits are on the right column.

I'm being very careful to preserve the integrity of the article. Please keep suggestions ongoing. Thank you again!

Someone just massacred (by accident, probably) the infobox layout after changing Efraym Elliott Yamin to Efraym Elliot Bartholomew Yamin. I fixed it - but can someone kindly confirm that "Bartholomew" is indeed a given name?

Also, the pic in that infobox is slated for deletion, for copyright reasons. I'll see what's up with that. We might also want to add a good picture from his tour, if someone wants to offer one. Thanks.

If someone could PM me a link to a good-sized image of the Richmond Magazine issue with Elliott (about 400 pixels wide, 72dpi is okay) so that the text is legible, I'll add it to the article under Fair Use policy. I believe the magazine has asked that scans can't be posted/linked on this forum.

P.S. Thanks to CA24 for allowing the article use a couple of her concert pictures.
