Hello everyone. I have not been here much at all lately, because I have been very busy reading, learning and being extremely overwhelmed, as my precious 10 year old kitty, Trixter, was just diagnosed with feline diabetes earlier this month. I was sure I was going to lose him, as the treatment is very expensive, and I am currently unemployed and trying to finish up school. With lots of prayers and tears, I came across a website of an organization that helps pets in need, when their people cannot afford nonroutine veterinary care. They are paying the entire 524 dollars for the initial treatment and blood work, etc to get Trixter started on treatment! For monthy costs for syringes and insulin, people have donated and sponsored my sweet Trixter, so he will have the medicine he needs to stay alive and healthy. I feel so blessed. If you would like to make a donation to my Trixter's fund, to pay for vet visits and other supplies I will need for Trixters diabetic needs, please send me an email @ LostInTheSeeThru@netzero.com and let me know, and I will provide you with a link to his page where you can send donations to my Trixters fund through the organization that is helping us. Any and ALL donations are deeply appreciated by Trixter and everyone who loves him. He is a big part of our family.
The main point of this post, however, is to inform anyone who has kitties, that you cut the chances of this happening to your furbabies if you eliminate all dry food from their diets. Carbs are the problem in dry cat food. Cats are not built to consume such large amounts of it, and it is essential that they are consuming water WITH their food. A cats natural diet is made up of mostly protien, fat and water. Consuming too much carbohydrates in their food causes the pancreas to be over worked, and over a period of time it starts to not work like it should (or even stop working), resulting in diabetes, which will kill if not treated. I am no expert, but this is what I have learned since my Trixters diagnosis. So please, if you have kitties, feed them low carb (less than 10%) canned foods. It could save their lives AND save you a lot of money.
I also wanted to add how oddly coincidental this has all been. I had never learned about diabetes much at all until Elliott. I started learning about it because of him, and then this happens so soon after. I thank God for E now more than ever, as he gave me hope and encouragment that diabetes is NOT a death sentence, and my Trixter can live a long healthy life as long as we are treating this disease. When I felt helpless, like I couldn't handle this, I thought of E and how he is living the life he has always dreamed of while living with diabetes. What a blessing he has been in my life.
Thanks for listening. I hope this can help save at least one kitty, and help stop this from happening to others. It is scary, but we will make it through.
With Love,
