Title: Help Me Quit Smoking
Description: at least....help me stay quit?

alysoup - July 31, 2006 06:33 PM (GMT)
I haven't had a ciggarette in about 24+ hours and I am going crazy right now.

I am sweating (and the ac is blasting), I am hungry a lot, I am biting the sides of my finger nails (I can't stop).

I know that it will get better after a few days.

Just wondering if anyone else on here had any quitting stories to maybe help me out a bit.

wish me luck :cheerleader:

RICluvsnmissesE - July 31, 2006 06:58 PM (GMT)
good luck aly!

EDubsGurl - July 31, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
Just think of your son everytime you smoke a cigarette. Then you'll realize that you don't want your kid growing up being unhealthy.

Danielle.Hearts.E - July 31, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
Best of luck, Aly! You've got the entire E-Train behind you! :etrain:

Here's a hug from Danielle to you... :glomp:

I wish you all the luck in the world, and I think that what you are doing is admirable.
And I'm very glad to hear that you do what you can to keep your son away from it. That, too, is admirable.

Oh, I'm sorry I misjudged you. :(

oh no, there's no possible way you could have figured that out without me saying it.
I just forgot that a lot of smokers do smoke in front of their kids.
So, I should have said that in the beginning :)

I don't know if this helps at all...

This is Mr. Dancing Banana.
He is very proud of you.
Mr. Dancing Banana will dance a little more,
Since what you are doing is so admirable.

If you're ready to pick up a cigarette, close your eyes and remember Mr. Dancing Banana!

:)

...I'm very tired today. Excuse me for that. :P

I quit smoking in 1990 for one simple reason--I didn't want my kids to smoke. I never smoked at home--only at work or when I was out of the house.

How did I quit? Cold-turkey. Did the desire to smoke go away? No. But everytime I wanted a cigarette, I would recite a long memorized verse from a poem or a song. By the time I was finished, the craving went away. You might also try drinking a glass of water everytime you want a cigarette. You'll find some anti-smoking poems here. You can find water just about anywhere.

Wishing you the best. Quitting smoking is like losing weight. It's all between your ears. The physical addiction to smoking usually subsides in three weeks.

It's been 16 years since my last cigarette. Do I miss it? Sometimes. But I still choose not to smoke.

Mike

PS: Try not to hang around people who smoke (at least early on).

thanks for the advice :) And it's awesome that you haven't smoked for so long!

and the non-smokers thing. Should be fairly easy. My husband doesn't smoke, none of my close friends smoke, my parent's don't smoke.
So, hopefully that will help me be strong.

ALSO!
My husband is putting away $5 for every pack of ciggarettes I don't buy that i would have. I have $10 so far :P
I can buy myself something nice soon enough :D

Danielle.Hearts.E - July 31, 2006 07:57 PM (GMT)
Aly - Perfect! You have an incentive (besides Mr. Dancing Banana's happiness)! :)

Hehe, well, I was rushing to conclusions and that's rude of me to. And I figured you did indeed smoke in front of your kid, because my parents used and well still do in front of me and my brother.

But, I give you my best wishes and hope you have the confidence to succeed in quitting smoking. :glomp:

I'VE NEVER SMOKED ALY, SO I DON'T HAVE ANY HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOU. MY DAD QUIT ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AND HE SMOKED 65+ YEARS.
SO IF HE COULD DO IT SO CAN YOU. YOU GO GIRL!!!

SERIOUSLY, I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS.

alysoup - July 31, 2006 10:52 PM (GMT)
thanks everyone, I really love all the support. And coming on here and just talking about smoking when i want to have one makes me feel better. byt the time I am done writing about it, I don't want one anymore :P

The little things :grouphug:

I used to smoke socially back in the late 80's early 90's. Fortunately it never got to the point of addiction. But my friend still smokes. I don't see her as often anymore and don't like to preach to her but every year I call her on the same day "The Great American Smoke out" hoping that she'll stop. To no avail.

Alysoup--You've made the decision to stop-which was probably really hard to do. I wish you all the luck in the world and if you slip up, please don't beat yourself up about it and say "forget it." Just start again. You've got us all behind you sending positive thoughts, wishes and prayers your way. YOU CAN DO IT!

alysoup - July 31, 2006 11:11 PM (GMT)
I figure, the more people sending me positive vibes, the more likely I am to feel the love :grouphug: :grouphug:

You don't? Well good for you, that's the way to be a good role model!

My advice:

A. Do what Elliott does, chew lots of gum

B. Candy cigarettes! They are good too.

C. Nicorette

D. Think about how you spend over $1000 per year on cigarettes. Now think of something you wanna buy with that $1000 and stick in on the refrigerator!

bonanza17 - August 1, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
i wish you the best of luck, Aly! A good thing to remember is that in the long run, you will be so proud that you accomplished something that VERY few people can accomplish! :rocker:

alysoup - August 1, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
I will thank the heat for me not smoking right now. I was 2.8457 seconds away from going to buy a pack but it is over 110 heat index today and I didn't want to go outside.

But, my lungs are killing me. I would have thought the opposite would be happening.

lex - August 1, 2006 07:15 PM (GMT)
Congrats on quitting!! I quit a little over 2 years ago myself. I started smoking at 16 (cause I was super cool, of course) then quit at 30. That was after trying on 2 other occasions and going back to it. So my caveat to you would be, don't think that you can have one when you go out. It won't help, even if you think just one won't hurt, the next one will be more on your mind. On the flip side, don't be too hard on yourself if you do slip--just carry on.

I found Quitnet.com to be a very helpful site with other people going through what you are going through. Also, the site will keep a tally of all of the cigs you haven't smoked and all the money you've saved--which I found to be encouraging.

Frozen grapes are a wonderful snack to try.

Black licorice is supposed to help with the craving, as is cinnamon.

In 3 days, the nicotine is gone from your system--which makes the 3rd day one of the hardest to get through.

The cilia that has been eradicated due to the smoke will start to come back within a few weeks.

Your lungs hurting is a good sign, they are now beginning to heal and getting rid of all of the toxic chemicals.

Congratulations again!!!

alysoup - August 1, 2006 08:47 PM (GMT)
I was just at quitnet! Thanks for all the tips. The lungs are starting to make a come back.

I have been 48 hours. But, it seems like 48 days :P

But, tomorrow will be a great day (day 3)...sarcasm...
But, I can make it!!!

alysoup - August 2, 2006 01:56 AM (GMT)
I am so so so so hungry...all the time *tear*

inyoureyes - August 2, 2006 01:52 PM (GMT)
The third day, I've heard is the hardest. If you can make three days, you can do anything! Good luck! Drink water, chew gum, and stay on the E-Train. and just so you know, just like that 5 dollars you get for not smoking every pack, I get paid 5 dollars for every hour I work for my dad. I just bought a new digital camera!

It may also help to listen to music. this always makes me feel better. I know of two songs that might help you.

The first is "mountains" by Lonestar.

There are time in life
when you gotta fall
lose your grip
trip and fall
when you can lean on no one else
that's when you find yourself
I've been around
and I've noticed that
walkin's easy when the road is flat
but the dang on hills
will get you every time
oh, the good lord gave us mountains
so we could learn how to climb

(although I always like to change the last word to "fly")

The second one is "Some people change" by Kenny Chesney. There's a Montgomery Gentry version too.

She was born with her mother's habit:
You could say: "It's in her blood."
She hates that she's gotta have it:
As she fills her glass up.
An she'd love to kill that bottle,
But all she can think about,
Is a, a better life, a second chance,
An' everyone she's letting down.

She throws that bottle down

Here's to the strong
Thanks to the brave
don't give up hope
some people change
against all odds
against the grain
love finds a way
some people change

idol_observer - August 3, 2006 01:41 PM (GMT)
I quit smoking cold turkey in 1982 and haven't smoked since. After the initial redrawal period, it gets easier in increments. One day you realize you were able to go all day without thinking about cigarettes.

However, I didn't think my husband would EVER quit smoking. He smoked for over 40 years and was eventually smoking 3 packs a day. He had tried to quit many times, but he was SOO irritable and grumpy, I almost force fed him a cigarette :justkidding: He would sit in a chair all day and hang onto the arms of the chair until his knuckles were white. I tried to get him to keep busy, but to no avail. It wasn't hard to see he wasn't going to make it.

Then, almost 3 years ago, he wanted to try it again. I encouraged him, but inside was bracing for the storm. He had tried patches before, but this time he used patches and Welbrutrin. I couldn't believe the difference. He was relaxed and in a good mood. I kept waiting for the melt down, but it never happened. I don't know how you feel about taking anti-depressants, but the Welbrutrin made so much difference for him. The prescription is just for a couple of months, but he didn't even take all of it. He has not smoked since. He says he misses smoking some, but it's obvious he's not craving them as before.

Good luck to you. Never quit trying!!

Vicki

day four!

sharonburr - August 3, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
Alysoup,

Honey, you have already gone through the worst!!!

I was so miserable for the first three days that I literally locked myself in my home, told the kids, "LEAVE YOUR MOTHER ALONE!!!", and just gritted my teeth in determination. It was hard, oh so hard.

But on the fourth day, I emerged a new woman! And, every day from that point on, I thought less and less of smoking a cig. Also, felt SOOOOO good and so proud and even smelled SO good!

This was 17 years ago and I have not had one since. After going through the first three days of miserable withdraw, I have been determined to NEVER EVER AGAIN succumb (is that a word?) to the Phillip Morris corporation.

Alysoup, victory is yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nikkib703 - August 4, 2006 05:42 PM (GMT)
I must say that I'm really proud of you. I quit at the end of January, and it was hard for a liitle while, but I'm doing okay now. You won't believe the difference in how you feel after a while. I still miss having a cig sometimes, but I wouldn't trade the way I feel now for one....I have alot more energy now. Another good tip is to stay away from caffeine. I'm a coffee drinker, and this was real hard for me, especially in the mornings, but it helps tremendously. Lots of gum, lots of hard candy, lots of determination, and you'll do fine! :glomp:
