Title: Opinions Re: MMFL CD Version
France - May 21, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
I love Elliott singing this song; it was my favorite performance. However, I think the background in the CD version is whack! It's all over the place, and it doesn't showcase Elliott's voice. I wonder if Elliott is happy with the arrangement. Don't get me wrong, I still listen to it quite often, and I think Elliott's voice is brilliant in it, but I just don't like what was done with the music. It sounds like he sang it (VERY WELL) and the producers just went back and threw whatever music to it.
SweetElliott - May 21, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
I like it either way...yes the background music kind of drowns him out, but I just keep focus on his voice and that makes it all better....
He is so talented..I can't wait to hear a whole CD of him...
SylviaRebecca - May 21, 2006 08:20 PM (GMT)
This is a hard one for me...I love his version from the early days of the show so soooo much. He made that seem effortless, and it was flippin' brilliant!!
But I love the full version...I like hearing the whole song through, as I never had before. His voice sounds a touch strained in spots, but he sounds incredible nonetheless. I don't care too much for parts of the arrangement, but I think Elliott rises above it with that voice.
So all in all...I love it. I think a more subtle arrangement would have made me love it more, but I do love it!!
I just want a full CD of FULL LENGTH SONGS from this man SOOOOOON!!!!
DawnlikesElliott - May 21, 2006 08:29 PM (GMT)
Where are you guys finding the full version of the song? The cd doesn't come out unitl Tuesday correct? Or am I completly late on that?
elliottcrazy - May 21, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
When I heard it I loved it because it was Elliott but I did get the impression that it was a one shot type of deal if you know what I mean? The song itself is pretty much just that though..very little room for re-takes & slicing. It seemed a little rushed but Elliott probably set that tempo himself maybe? I wouldn't say the production on it was all that great..I think in a high end studio or at least with more time spent perfecting it..it could be better. But overall..just becuase I know how good he is..I give it an 8/10.
LOTR Fan 71281 - May 21, 2006 08:47 PM (GMT)
I'm still not going to pass judgement until I listen to the cd quality of the song. The songs that out now was taken from streaming audio on the internet and was mono sound. Of course it isn't going to sound as good as it could be. Nonetheless, I really like the this version. It's very Jazzy and he stayed true to how the others (James Moody, King's Pleasure) did the song. Props to Elliott!
Gogo - May 21, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
I liked it better when he did it on the show. He was so ON and the music background was better. I think if he did it acapella it would have been good. I've heard others say the sax player sucked. I think so too.
Trip56 - May 21, 2006 08:54 PM (GMT)
I like it, but I must admit, I like the arrangement he did on the show better. I really wish they would have included the girl's part in the CD version, too. "What is all this talk about lovin' me, my sweet?"
Rutti - May 21, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
It sounds very much like the original James Moody arrangement. If you're into jazz - and I'm a big jazz fan - you will love it! Can't wait to buy it online on the 23rd and get the full stereo version. Every time I talk about it, think about it, tell somebody about it, I have to go back and listen to it again. And again! It is so awesome!!!!

Rutti or others, how do you download from this link. It plays, and I LOVE IT!!!! HOW COOL, ELLIOTT IN THE RECORDING STUDIO!!!! HE'S SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!!!
Please help this techno challenged person!
OMG, I'm listening to it over and over and I'm crying now. No other AI contestant comes close to the hem of Elliott's jeans. (Yeah that sax is alittle loud).
koko4elliott - May 21, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
I absolutely love the CD version of MMFL! I have it playing on my computer while I'm in here and it keeps playing over and over and over again. What's strange is that each time, I hear something a little different in his voice ... it never gets boring! It's such a subtle, sexy song the way he sings it ... he's incredible!
It's going to kill me having to wait for a full Elliott CD! If anyone wants to make a CD in the meantime of all his performances on AI, please sign me up ... I'd pay anything for it! :bounce:

Thanks, Rutti and LOTR Fan 71281, I got it. OMG, It's INCREDIBLE! I still have the tears welling up. Elliott's voice is just beautiful. Anyone who has the slightest appreciation of jazz will say, "WOW!" when they hear this version. I could definitely see this hitting #1 on the jazz/R&B charts.
I wonder how many takes they had to do with other contestants who can't seem to remember the words or consistently sing off key.

LOTR Fan:
Glad to meet another jazz fanatic. And if you know a little about music, there are about 10 key changes in this song and E sails through them like butta'. I thought he was awesomely great before but after hearing this, I know E is a vocal genius!!! There has never been an idol contestant, nor will there ever be, who could ever think to attempt this song. I am so in awe!!!!
emren - May 21, 2006 10:02 PM (GMT)
E's vocal is fantastic but that arrangement - trying for a nice groove but it's a busy mess, especially the sax imho.
Still, it's E and that's good enough for me :)
Juicesmom - May 21, 2006 10:11 PM (GMT)
I loved, loved, LOVED it! My sis listened too and said he sounds soooo good. I barely heard the music; all I could hear was that melodious voice, booming through my speakers. I can't wait to add it to my MP3!!!

I didn't know it was that many key changes. I knew there were quite a few key changes but not that many. I'm even more impressed now. He did it effortlessly. I can see how people might not like it unless they are Jazz fans. It's ok...they'll all come around. :P
lindagt - May 21, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
I am a jazz lover and no bad arrangment can disguise the fact that this is a brilliant artist. This is an incredibly difficult song to sing and it is so effortless for him. When I heard it on the radio on Friday (we live in Richmond, so they played it) I was blown away. The first time I heard the short version, I knew right away that Elliott was not just a good vocalist, but a great one - then the long version...WOW for me!
Rutti - May 21, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
Well maybe ai exagerrated about the key changes, LOL, but there are more than 2 or 3. Randy told E the night he sang it in top 20 that it was a very difficult song and it was but that was only the first part of the song. Adding the rest of the song, also adds a bunch of key changes throughout the song making it even more diffiicult and he does it amazingly. Have you ever heard the original by James Moody? E's arrangement sounds very similar but E's vocals are 1,000 times better.
LOTR Fan 71281 - May 21, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
I actually have the verison from James Moody. I liked it but I preferred Kings Pleasure's version. Either way, Elliott out snag both of them, which is pretty hard to do considering they were the originals. I've heard others version "Brian McKinght and even Queen Latifah" and they don't do the song justice. Elliott surpassed all of them. People need to understand that this song is extremely diffuclt, with all the phrasing, multiple key changes and changes in tempo. WOW!

I'm sure the Itunes version will be better quality, but whether it is or isn't, we need to purchase it - multple times people - to put E #1 for downloads. Come on, we spent money to text vote - this is sorta the same thing, right?
He's already in the top 20 for airplay for the past week according to Mediabase. Check it out! That's our E up there with all those name artists. I'm so proud!!!

Elliott sounds amazing, and I love the jazziness of the song. I usually hate vocal jazz, to be honest, but Elliott rips it! The arrangement is crappy, but it seems like all the Idols' songs are, so I guess it's okay?
E-fan4life - May 22, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
Thanks for posting the link.
I'm not sure I liked the arrangement either but will have to listen a few times to decide for sure. But I just loved listening to him for a full song. God I love his voice!!!!
Amunet - May 22, 2006 03:50 AM (GMT)
I think I just got so used to hearing his live performance that the cd version is kind of a let down.
Don't get me wrong, it's still good, but not really everything I was hoping it would be.
I was hoping it was gonna be a bit faster like the first time we heard him singing it.

Isn't it actually Eddie Jefferson doing the vocalese on James Moody's version? Eddie's the one who wrote the lyrics to Moody's instrumental masterpiece. I love Eddie Jefferson, but his voice can't hold a candle to Elliott's!

Buņuel_Fan - May 22, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
I have to admit that while I like Elliott's vocals (he sounds so much like Stevie and Donny on record) the arrangment and overall sound quality is a bit crappy. It makes Elliott's voice sound strained and smoky (which I know that's not the case listening to many of his mp3 files from Idol). Sometimes these producers need to learn that less means more, and that's one of the reasons why Elliott's live rendition of "Moody's Mood for Love" was so much better because it wasn't overproduced like the CD version. Most of these Idol CDs aren't that good for that very reason.
I still enjoy it though only because it's the full version and Elliott's voice is timeless.
AshleyPacka - May 22, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
I too think the background is a bit cheesy, but not enough to distract from Elliott's voice. I was floored the first time I heard the full studio version. E has always been an amazing live vocalist, but one of my all time favorite singers just does not translate will in the studio. (Tony Lucca) I was kind of afraid of this with Elliott, but holy crap, it sounds PERFECT. His runs, intonation, everything sounds like magic. That kid is going to make an amazing album.
