Title: Soulful Vocalists
Description: Male, female, new or unknown artists

GypsyNFla - August 18, 2006 09:18 PM (GMT)
Feel free to share some of your new finds or favorites.

I don't know where I've been, but I just found Frank McComb today, and I'm absolutely loving him! If you love Donny Hathaway, I think you will love this guy.

Frank McComb - his lastest CD is on CD baby. It is fabulous.

Here's a female. She's been around a long long long time but not really known at all.

But

Bettye LaVette

I suggest listening to How Am I Different

Wow! Love Frank McComb! Had never heard him before, but he's great!! I will definitely be visiting i-tunes for some downloads. From lurking at the Musicians threads, I found Kem. He's classified as R&B, but he has kind of a finky jazz sound and his style is very similar to Al Jarreau, my absolute favorite vocalist! I've downloaded my own Kem CD. I recommend "I'm Missin' Your Love". Funky, bluesy - great!

oosh - August 19, 2006 03:09 AM (GMT)
A couple of oldies LAURA NYRO, ELLEN McILLWAINE,
& a newbie RUFUS WAINWRIGHT

Rutti, I'm glad you like Frank McComb. What a find aye? He's one of my favorites now. I also love Kem!

Oosh, I used to love Laura Nyro back in the day. Sad that she died so young (ovarian cancer).

Another artist I wasn't familiar with is Latrice Barnett. I first found her on "Five Point Plan," which was a San Francisco based band listed on CD baby, Five Point Plan. This was a tight band. Especially on the tune "Feed Your Soul." When I read the comments on this CD, look what I found:

Reviewer: The Gunn
Tasty, groove-a'licious Acid Jazz for lovers of the Brand New Heavies & Incognito. Latrice Barnett is a diva that deserves recognition ! Surprise kudos for background vocals on "Rare" by then unknown (2002) American Idoler, Latoya London !

She also has a solo CD titled Illuminatehere on Amazon.com.

i dont' know if he has a cd or something, but if you have watched Rockstar Supernova...this guy Josh Logan reminded of Elliott a lot, he's more a soul singer than a rock singer, he has been eliminated already but man, that guy is amazing! i love his voice

This doesn't exactly fall into the soulful category, but it is very moving music, and I just love this CD, Antony and the Johnsons

I saw him perform "If It Be Your Will" in the new Leonard Coen movie, and was compelled to find a CD.

Randy Crawford is great! I remember her featured on Soul Crusaders song "Street Life." Thanks for the link to her on youtube! That was awsome.

I saw Gladys Knight way back when I was a teenager. Gladys Knight and the Pipps. I remember her well.

Hey Berkie, I gave Bettye another listen on Amazon.com. She is growing on me, and her album "A Woman Like Me" is nice! I love that song, along with "Serves Him Right" and "When the Blues Catch Up To You."

Thanks for sharing this. Oh, here is a link to her album on Amazon here

Good stuff. My mother really liked her alot. I always liked her version of Piece of My Heart. Only have heard three people do that song justice...of course Janis Joplin, Betty, and Melissa Etheridge.

I don't really watch the show much so I only saw one of his performances. It was when he sang "Santeria" and I loved it.

Shemekia Copeland

When singing sensation Shemekia Copeland first appeared on the scene in 1997 with her groundbreaking debut CD, TURN THE HEAT UP, she quickly became, at 18 years old, a roots music superstar. Critics from around the country celebrated Shemekia's music as fans of all ages agreed that an unstoppable new talent had arrived. Shemekia released two more CDs: 2000's GrammyŠ-nominated WICKED and 2002's TALKING TO STRANGERS (produced by Dr. John), and in that short period of time, collected five Blues Music Awards, a GrammyŠ nomination, five Living Blues Awards, and was honored with the coveted "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" Award by the DownBeat Critics' Poll. Rock legend Robert Plant called her "the next Tina Turner." Shemekia has already had a lifetime's worth of career highlights, including performances on national television, appearances in films, and sharing stages with some of the biggest names in the music world.

Corinne Bailey Rae

Bio intro - It becomes self-evident the moment you hear her sing the very first note of her very first EP. It's called 'Like A Star', and it's a slice of sublime Billie Holiday blues delivered with a voice that pins you, in the softest but most persuasive of ways, to the wall; a voice that floats up effortlessly, full of caress, subtlety and the very purest quality. It is wonderful, this voice, and surely a discovery to treasure, but it belongs to a young woman not from somewhere musically exotic - say, Mississippi or even Manhattan - but just east of the M1: Leeds. Her name is Corinne Bailey Rae, and she was born to do this.

Maysa Leak

She is one of my favorite singers who is on the top of my soul list.

Baltimore native Maysa Leak has gained a small but fiercely loyal following over the past decade as one of the great modern soul/jazz vocalists, and her work has been appreciated by millions of others who simply don't know her name. Compared by some to Sade, she is really a unique vocalist who combines a keen sense of jazz phrasing with a gorgeous, deep, soulful voice similar to Lalah Hathaway.

Maysa's first major break occurred in the late 80s, following her graduation from Morgan State University, when she became part of Stevie Wonder's backing group, Wonderlove, and performed on the Jungle Fever soundtrack. Her deep, smoky voice came to the attention of Incognito leader Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick, who made her the group's lead singer in the early 90s. Her performances on the group's Positivity and Beneath the Surface were outstanding, as she breathed sultry life into great tunes such as "Deep Water" and "Shade of Blue" and dueted with Mark Anthoni on the group's biggest international hit, "Still a Friend of Mine."

Alternating between London (Incognito's home) and Baltimore, Maysa recorded her eponymous solo debut in 1995 with Bluey's help and scored a minor hit with "What About Our Love." Her second album, All My Life became a hit on the Contemporary Jazz charts in 2000 and she scored even bigger internationally two years later with her Rex Rideout-produced Out of the Blue, which was listed by many Soul and Jazz magazines as among that year's best albums. While her beautiful voice was clearly spotlighted on all of her solo discs, she also showed a knack for choosing solid sophisticated material and the right producers and and arrangers to make all of her albums memorable. Maysa rejoined Incognito and worked on the group's 2004 album Adventures in Black Sunshine.

Working with producers Rex Rideout (Boney James, Will Downing) and Bluey, in September 2004 Maysa released her fourth solo album, Smooth Sailing. Not surprisingly, it was another fine outing that balanced her one-of-a-kind voice with tasty jazz arrangements and solid material. Silkier and sweeter than Incognito's acid jazz recordings, it was aimed right at the heart of smooth jazz radio and boasted solid tunes and playing throughout. And Maysa was in fine voice, absolutely nailing the Bluey-produced ballad "Soul Child" and the midtempo title cut. Even more accessible were "One More Chance" and the album closer, "Unexpectedly," a great cut that crossed the smooth jazz line and moved into UAC territory beautifully.

She followed it a year and a half later with Sweet Classic Soul on the Shanachie label.

Her CDs Smooth Sailing and Out of the Blue were awsome!

Oh man I posted this in another thread but this is perfect!

Venice Maki-He's kind the opposite of E because instead of being a white guy who sings soul, he's a black guy who sings acoustic rock, but his voice is very soulful and he brings so much passion to the songs he writes (and his songs are beautiful too!) I just saw him in a private concert on Thursday and not only is he even more amazing live, he's one of the sweetest, nicest people you will meet, and since he deserves major success, I've been shamelessly promoting :P . I have two of his CD's, his self-issued first album "Surviving the Fall" and one from 2006, "Which Way is Out?".

His myspace is www.myspace.com/venicemaki

and his regular site is www.venicemaki.com

You can buy his CD's only at amazon (and Itunes) and here's the link to WWIO?

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life.

Missy Hale, great vocalist and songwriter.

Originally from Washington State, Missi has many songwriting and recording credits to her name, ranging from touring as a background vocalist for American Idol's RJ Helton to appearing in a guest ensemble for Disney's 50th Anniversary Electric Light Parade, to having one of her songs featured in the Disney Movie "Lifesize" (Lindsay Lohan, Tyra Banks). In April 2005, she also served as Musical Director for "Making Peace with Imperfection", an original stage production conceived and produced by Constance/Fb.com. A recovering disordered eater with a passion for bucking cultural pressures, Missi is not only a fantastic vocalist and performer, but also an inspiration to all who seek freedom from eating and body image issues.

http://www.findingbalance.com/missi/default.asp

Dean Krippaehne's myspace has a song featuring her on a song called Don't You Worry: http://www.myspace.com/deankrippaehne

Another songr on Dean's music player is called Rewind featuring Michael Wastman. I googled about Michael and he must have been on Star Search a few years back. Nice voice!

Amy Winehouse. She is right there with Elliott in terms of having a natural inborn ability to sing raw & soulful. I don't say this because she is 'popular' right now but because she really sounds amazing to me. There isn't a track on her cd that's thin & lacking. Her lyrics are clever & meaningful & every track she pours her heart into. I think she'll be one of the greats.
Check out 'Wake up Alone' by Winehouse..brilliant.

ElliottisTrueBlue - July 29, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
I gotta add my fave singer, Phil Joel, although his sound is more rock/pop/soul/folkish. But he and Elliott both have that raw, husky sound to their voices which I love (neither had vocal training though), and he's probably one of the best live performers I've ever seen. He literally gives me chills live, especially when he belts out those really high notes :P. Plus all his songs have beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics, and it's also hard to find people these days who can write music & lyrics, sing amazingly, and play a crapload of instruments well too. I could go on about him all day but yeah :fangirly:

I totally agree about Amy. I only recently heard about her and have heard her song "rehab" a lot on the radio. That got me interested in her and I have been watching and listening to her performances nonstop on Youtube. It's so rare when you like every song on an artist's cd but I really love her "Back to Black"cd. I haven't gotten around to purchasing it yet but I will soon. I much prefer having the cd with all the photos and liner notes than downloading it from I tunes. But of course for Elliott I downloaded from I tunes as well as trips to Target, Walmart, etc.
Amy's "Love is a losing game" makes me cry every time.

I really like Amy Winehouse's voice...don't care much for her image though. Her cd came out March 20 also!

One of my favorite female vocalists is Corrine Drewery from the band Swing Out Sister...they had a big hit in the 80's with a song called Breakout. After that they had a few minor hits. They still make records independently and have a small but loyal following. Her voice is very soulful...she is a throwback to the 60's Burt Bacarach, Dionne Warwick sound, with a bit of jazzy influences thrown in for good measure. Check out the Swing Out Sister albums...It's Better To Travel, Kaleidescope World, Somewhere Deep In The Night, and 2005's Where Our Love Grows. You can hear samples on Amazon if you are interested. I would download an MP3 but I don't know how...or even what one is!! (are there MP1 and MP2's that I should know about??)

Just recently Martha Stewart was using and old Swing Out Sister tune called Am I the Same Girl? as the theme song for her daytime show.

Goapele, Kem, Vivian Green

I'm really into neo-soul too like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Floetry (saw them in concert!!), D'Angelo (also hails from Richmond, VA but currently in some trouble with the law), Maxwell, Eric Benet

ElliottisTrueBlue - July 31, 2007 09:04 PM (GMT)
Am I the only one who thinks Amy Winehouse is kind of overrated? I really love her voice and sound, but man, some of her lyrics are just kind of blah if you know what I'm saying...exhibit A:

"Its Like He Was Designed With Me In Mind
Hes So Good From Behind
Hes Beautifully Defined
I Miss Him Most Of All When It Got Late
Attempt To Hear Him Breathing
Or Feel His Shifting Weight "

And I hate it when people compare her to Etta James. Sorry.

elliottcrazy - July 31, 2007 11:09 PM (GMT)
I think she's an amazing talent, her lyrics are all autobiographical & she leaves nothing unsaid. Her Back to Black CD is tragic, funny & brilliant. I could post the lyrics to Wake Up Alone but they aren't done justice without her bluesy soulful voice bringing them to life.
'Back to Black' & 'Wake up Alone'....google the lyrics & watch her perform them.

Berkana - July 31, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
I absolutely love the tone and quality to Amy's voice. I have her cd, and it's wonderful. The only thing I don't like about her is she comes across as very immature. The problem with her soul and everyone elses soul is they sing about it and back it up with there passion. To me she just does it because she can, I don't see anything behind her voice.

Artists like EisTrueblue said, Etta James, Billie, Ella, is that (At least definitely the last two) knew heartbreak, they knew how to convey a powerful meaning.

The only song I feel like I connect on a deeper level to is Back To Black. The other songs are fantastic, but I don't feel a special connection with her music.

elliottcrazy - July 31, 2007 11:50 PM (GMT)
I understand where you are coming from Berkana. I think sometimes when a singer is young & singing the 'blues' it's hard for people to take them seriously....we fall into the trap of looking up to the 'old' singers ..the old 'greats' to find authenticity in the singing. We let 'age' get in the way. I find Winehouse to be as authentic in her heartbreak as some of the 'greats'....perhaps her off stage ( & on stage) antics are getting in the way of her being taken seriously by some people. That's understandable..she's definately immature in that respect.

Exactly. Or maybe it's also all of her antics that make it a little bit harder to take her seriously...this is all JMHO though.

For me I don't think age is really a factor. Artists like Jonny Lang and Marc Broussard are both around her age. (22 and 25? I think plus Jonny released his best known song Lie to Me when he was 15) And I believe them.

Maybe it is her antics that are clouding my judgement of her, but I don't believe age has anything to do with it. Heck I'm one of those that believe Renee Olstead is awesome. (And she's what 16? 14 when she released her self-titled debut. )
