Title: Friendly Outdoor Spider
Description: Just some pics heh
Amunet - September 6, 2006 08:44 AM (GMT)
Just a spider that I took pics of heh. And here's a story about her! :P heh (yes god I'm bored as hell)
So a few weeks ago, this HUGE spider popped up outside of our backroom window. It wasn't hurting us, and not hurting anything else.. well cept for the bugs that got into it's web... so we left it alone and watched it to pass the time waiting for our dogs to do their business outside.
Then.. an extremely windy storm came through and the poor thing just got beat to hell on the window. You could actually hear the "tinktinktink" of it hitting the glass :P
Obviously the next day it was gone. I thought it had died or just gotten blown away. It was sad but I moved on.
Then all of a sudden, today (weeks later).. who do I see on the side of our house? Yay! It's our nice humongoid spider again! But she's missing a leg :( (calling it female b/c read that the females are big while males are small)
Spiders really aren't that smart though b/c it's another really bad place for her to build a web heh.
So yeah, I'm not some spider fan or anything.. but they're ok so long as they're not crawling anywhere near me heh. I just think they're helpful specially since we're plagued with bugs galore here (old house).
And *nodnod* here are the 2 pics I snapped of her.. I'll take more if she's still out there... think it might've stormed though so she could've moved again.

Oh man, that is so cool! I live in a basement suite so I have had to make piece with giant spiders sharing my living space a long time ago.
We don't have beautifully colored spiders like that here! Not fair! Ours are all pretty much black.
I have a picture of "my" humongous spider somewhere - when I find it, I will scan it and post it here!

wow that is so awesome! but it doesnt look frieandly but i guess it is if it isnt bitting anyone
CathleenSusan - September 6, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
Okay I scanned the picture. Sorry for the cruddy quality. It might not look it, but this spider was HUGE!!
Amunet - September 12, 2006 09:28 PM (GMT)
Might not look it?? That spider does look Humongous!!! rofl... Looks pretty scary too :P
Here's an update on Miss Spidey.....
Welp... a few days ago when I took my dogs out.. I saw that her new web area was gone. I thought she might've moved again b/c it was windy the day before, but somehow... she lost yet another leg! :( I dunno if this prevented her from making her web in the same area or not, but she now had a much much smaller on closer to the ground and up against the house.
I know it's just a spider but I felt so bad for some reason when I saw she had lost another leg.. I actually got upset b/c I thought she was going to die :P
But anywho... she was fine.... until today.
Today... I just let my dogs out and what do I see?
Not only has her abdomen? The big juicy butt area... whatever it's called is all shriveled up! But she now has a big big Eggsac!
From what I understand, the females die after they make their sacs, which is sad, but I'm excited about the sac though!
We did see a smaller (still a good size but smaller than her) spider with a huge web near our front door the other day, but I don't know if it was the male or not. It disappeared the next day so it could've been.. even though it didn't have the yellow/black like our big girl has.

The eggsac is about the size of a large gumball that you'd get out of a 25cent candy machine.

I really hope the little baby spiders survive... and really hope they dont decide to come inside :P heh
So long as they stay out like their momma did... I'll happily watch them when I take my dogs out as well :D

my goodness
That spider has been through the ringer, and what great pics too.
Can't believe she lost yet another leg.
Keep us updated on Ms Spider will ya?

LOL, I totally understand your feelings toward Miss Spidey! I get that way too for little creatures that most people are repulsed by and want to kill. I have 2 spiders living in the corner of a room in the basement and I actually go in there and talk to them - yeah I am totally nuts! These two spiders are really non-threatening looking. They have very tiny bodies and long thing legs. So they are really not scary.
Keep us posted on the egg sack developments!
Amunet - September 17, 2006 07:38 AM (GMT)
Welp.. it seems as though Miss Spidey has died.
Day after I took those pics.. she wasn't on the eggsac.. just slightly further down the web.
And then the next day.. she disappeared.
I didn't see any body and don't want to move anything around there to look for one b/c I don't want to mess up the web.
But yeah, I'm pretty sure she is dead.
Not sure how long it takes for the spiders to hatch... I'll have to look into that.
I just read that if they lay them near winter, they will stay in the sac until it's warmer out and then will emerge.
I'll have to look into it :D
But yeah... sac looks fine heh. I didn't get a good look but a very tiny spider seems to have made a home in the old webbing o_O
I'll have to see if it's there tomorrow or not and see if it just got stuck or if it's actually a web stealer :P

This was really interesting with very cool pics! HOWEVER, I have a big fear of spiders and will likely have nightmares of a yucky yellow and black one. :hide:
The missing legs will make it less creepy in my dream, though, thank God!!
Amunet - September 18, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
Oh the drama is unfolding as we speak!
I went outside to throw away garbage and to check on the eggsac and the teeny tiny little spider I had seen on the webbing the other day.
And what was a I greeted with??
It's Miss Spid.... er wait... no it isn't... it's another spider with all of it's legs! :noway:
It's just a tiny bit smaller than our big girl so I'm not sure if it's a male or just another female coming along to make another sac (which I'm not sure they do that?) From what I've read.. the males are alot smaller than the females so... I do think it is another female. I'll just call it an IT though.
I'm eager to see what IT is going to do. If it's just going to disappear like our Missy did... or if it is another female.. if she's going to harm the eggsac... or what!
So far.. it just looks like she's hanging around it like Miss Spidey did before she died.
Maybe this female also has an eggsac closeby that I haven't noticed... who knows but dangit if it isn't interesting! lol

Oh yeah... and I read that the baby spiders will hatch in the fall, but will stay inside of the sac until spring and then emerge :)
EDIT:
Ok I finally found a pic of what a male looks like.. and this one is definitly another female!
From the way she's shriveled just like our other girl was.... she already laid her eggsac somewhere as well.
No idea why she took up residence on Miss Spidey's web though.
I really hope she's not trying to destroy the eggsac.

Well... checked in on our new spidey and she was gone!
I thought maybe she had left to die as well, but when I was letting my dogs back in... the sneaky minx had just moved sorta close to the backdoor/gate area!
I don 't think it's a very good spot though. One wrong move by one of my dogs... one flick of their wagging tails and she's toast.
I'll get pics of her tomorrow if she's still there.
noira - September 19, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
this is so interesting. Like watching the Discovery channel. :)
I don't guess spiders grow back their legs, so it must be a different r one. Hehe.
Won't this one die too, since she had already laid an egg (sack)?.
Great pics, what type of camera do you use?
bella86 - September 20, 2006 08:11 PM (GMT)
Nice high-def pictures, but they scared the bejabbers out of me. I guess I'm a bit arachnophobic. Please continue with the updates I'm curious to see what baby spiders look like :)
Amunet - September 20, 2006 08:28 PM (GMT)
I let my dogs out when I woke... and as I figured... the new Spider.. who I will now call.. hmm...
Spidey JR (even though it is female :P heh)....
moved from her spot near the backdoor.
I peeked around the corner at the eggsac to see if she had gone back to that spot, but no, she didn't... now.. she actually made a web in the same spot Miss Spidey had hers!
I guess I was wrong in assuming this spider had already laid her eggsac. Guess she's just small b/c she isn't rdy to lay hers yet.
I'm really curious to see if she's going to lay hers by the other one & I'm still wondering exactly why she was on Miss Spidey's...... so interesting so interesting hehe...
Here are 2 pics of Spidey Jr on her new web....

Dont know the model of the camera I use... just know it's a Kodak heh....
noira - September 22, 2006 02:12 AM (GMT)
cool, Spidey made her own web, can't wait for the next episode :)
CathleenSusan - September 22, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
This is so fascinating, Amunet! I have a fear of spiders too, but the ones we have up here in Canada are all black, big and hairy. Really fear-inducing! Your spiders are so beautiful - I don't feel any kind of fear when I look at your pictures. Where abouts do you live?
Amunet - September 22, 2006 09:21 PM (GMT)
I'm in South Carolina :D
This is actually the first time I've seen a spider that looks like this... or well.. actually noticed one heh.
From what I read though they're actually really common all over NA
Amunet - September 28, 2006 05:43 AM (GMT)
It seems as though Spidey Jr didn't like her spot so moved.
I don't think she's dead b/c there's a single line of webbing going from the house to the ground.
She might've just moved back to her original spot... *shrugs*
No news on the eggsac! It looks about the same as it did before heh.
noira - September 30, 2006 12:58 AM (GMT)
just checking to see if there are any news :)
ECrazy3 - September 30, 2006 01:15 AM (GMT)
I just found this thread... This whole thing has been very interesting.
Yeah, I'm usually afraid of spiders if they're in my house and/or near me. But outside, as these spiders have been, it's just plain interesting! I've never seen spiders like that before, either. Anyone have any idea what kind it is?
Keep on updating us!
EDIT: Nevermind! I looked up what kind of spider it is for myself. It seems like it is the obviously named
Yellow Garden Spider, am I right?
Amunet - October 10, 2006 07:23 AM (GMT)
Ok so no real update except that the eggsac is now in danger of being swept away by none other than my BF!! Nooooo!
We need to paint the house.. really badly, but I think I might've convinced him not to paint that corner yet. But I'm not sure. I told him that it'd be spring before he could though :P heh
He said he would just move the sac to a tree but I don't think that would work. It could fall, or other bugs who didn't know about it before could get to it.
I really hope I can convince him to leave it alone. I'd hate to see it go.
noira - October 15, 2006 11:27 PM (GMT)
is the second spider now gone for good? Did it ever come back and is there just the eggsack left now?
