Well, I remember most of this stuff, but from my 80's kids.
How well I remember standing in a line at Bradlees at 7 a.m. cause we heard they were getting a shipment of Castle Grayskulls!
And then there was the Cabbage Patch frenzy
How about Cavarichi's, and Skidz?
what were those little plastic dolls that were almost like plastic "paper dolls".You snapped their clothes on, can't remember the name.
Just a few ........

Haha DJ! That list WAS my life! Here is some proof that I was an eighties dork:

Yes, I loved my gabbage patch kids at an age when it wasn't cool anymore but I didn't care! I played with my Barbies 'till I was 12 lol.

Me trying my dardest to look like Punky Brewster. Gotta love that hair I'm sporting! UGH!

This is my bedroom in 1987. Can you tell I was a little obsessed with Madonna?? Oh, and that is my best friend, Megumi.

I wish I had a picture of the other side of my room and the ceiling. Then you could see my obsession with Jon Knight from New Kids on the Block! LMAO!

realitymom - September 15, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
DJJJJJJ!! OMG!!! That was GREAT!! Talk about blasts from the past!!! :rotfl:

69. You had a tape cassette collection, either from the store or ones with tunes that you recorded off the radio.

70. You had posters of Kirk Cameron, Michael J. Fox & Mackenzie Astin all over your bedroom walls.

71. You watched ET go home in the movie theatre.

72. You remember learning Milli Vanilli were imposters & were SHOCKED...& devastated.

73. You had a Trapper Keeper...prolley with a Kitten or Puppy on it.

74. Stirrup pants were WAY COOL! ( I still miss those)

75. If your parents couldn't get the Cabbage Patch Kid (remember parents FIGHTING over those things? ugh) you got the generic version..A FLOWER KID!

76. You knew the words to Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" & your parents were impressed you knew who Tina was.

The dolls you are thinking of were called Flatsies. I had them, too, but I had mine back in the 70's. I remember that you could change the hair as well as the clothes on them.

Haha totally! I was a George Michael / Wham freak and my favorite song was Monkey. So I would sing "Why can't you do it, why can't you set your monkey free? always givin in to it, do you love the monkey or do you love me " LOL! My mom thought that "monkey" was a slang term for the male genitalia!

Of course that was about drug addiction hence the "monkey on your back". LMAO

This is fun!! I graduated in '85 and at the beginning of the school year our school won a local radio contest and the Hooters (the group, not the girls....remember When We Danced??) played at our first dance that year. I dated a guy that wore parachute pants almost every day. I HATED the day-glo clothes that were popular then. The hot place to get clothes was the Merry-Go-Round. For the guys, it was Chess Club. I liked wearing the sweatshirts with the cut-off sleeves and collar a la Flashdance, and when Purple Rain came out I was teased relentlessly because of the song Darling Nikki (none of the dim-witted boys I went to school with could figure out that the song was about a MAN). I remember seeing Nightmare On Elm Street, Beverly Hills Cop, Karate Kid, Breakin', Johnny Dangerously and Big Trouble In Little China at the movies back then. Does anyone remember going to Midnight Madness showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show with your bags full of toilet paper and toast, candles and rubber gloves, among other things (for those who think I'm a loon, alot of people really did this at the shows). Ahh, memories.....

I was born in '83. But I had an older sister so a lot of this stuff applies to me. The early 90's are still vividly in my head though.

and I'm serious about the Jem thing.

This is the 80's I remember. I remember the Hooters. I never wore day glo either but I did have jelly shoes! I saw Prince during his "Purple Rain" tour. And I remember all the movies you listed. The 80's totally rocked! :rocker:

I graduated in 1986 (going to my 20 year reunion in less than two weeks! Yipes!). Some of the earlier listed things apply to younger people. I was pretty much a teenager for most of the 80's so my experiences were a little different. Like going to the piling a bunch of friends in your car and going to the drive in, not watching the movie and drinking "Bartles and Jaymes" wine coolers! Does anyone still have drive ins in their towns? We don't anymore-very sad!

Okay how about a white sweatshirt (preferably with a large pink panther on the front) with a huge, ugly belt? Anyone remember that style? I have a picture in my mind of this girl Nadine wearing exactly that in grade 7 (1987). I mean who wears a pink leather belt with a baggy sweatshirt!! UGH! lol

OMG...Bartles & Jaymes---"thanks for your support' (LOL). I haven't thought about that for a while. Baltimore was alot of fun back then. My first car date was with a neighbor and we went to Memorial Stadium to watch an O's game. The stadium is gone, and the real hotspot back then out here was Hammerjacks. That was like the CBGB's of our town. Alot of great music & bands got their starts there (Crack the Sky,The Runaways--Joan Jett was a member, Greg Kihn, The Ravyns, KIXX, etc.). Joan Jett's I Love Rock & Roll video was filmed inside the club. Both the stadium and the club are gone now (there is a NEW Hammerjacks, but it's just not the same). Makes me sad...now I NEED that wine cooler!!

Damn was I GOOD at the running man. I put all my friends to shame! LMAO! I too remember when the truth came out about Milli Vanilli and I was so upset. Everyone at my school was bringing their LP's and cassettes to school and would either smash them, burn them or throw them away. I secrectly kept mine and *gasp* still have the LP and the cassette! lol

I remember when all of the talk and variety shows were lampooning them. Anyone remember the Milli Vanilli skits on In Living Color? They were really brutal, as were the ones with Jim Carrey doing Vanilla Ice. I remember when they were on Arsenio Hall's show trying to defend themselves and they sang in their own voices. It wasn't Kevin Federline bad, but it wasn't good, either. And Terrence Trent Darby....same look, but at least he actually sang his songs.

I do not believe there was a character named "Claire" in 16 Candles, I believe Molly Ringwald's character was named Samantha. Could it be Molly's character "Claire Standish" from The Breakfast Club you are thinking of?

Yes, my favorite of the John Hughes movies will always be 16 Candles. Poor Samantha *sob* *sob* nobody remembered her birthday! And no one can forget the magic that is Long Duk Dong!

I did like Pretty in Pink, but even back in the 80's I thought that pink dress she made for herself was hideous lol. To each their own I suppose lol! I loved this movie mainly because I was in lust with James Spader and he was so slimey and bad in it - yum!

I never get tired of seeing the Breakfast club. At that time I was crushin' on Judd Nelson lol.

I also LOVED Andrew McCarthy and watched every movie he was in religiously. Pretty in Pink of course, but also The Mannequin series, Class (Rob Lowe!), Less Than Zero and St. Elmo's Fire.

Hmmm, well my recollections of the Eighties style wise is more from 1985 - 1990. Because I was only 5 years old in 1980.

I am not sure when the "Farrah look" was in. Must have been late seventies/ early eighties?

I know when I was around ten the look was things like pony-tails on one side of your head and crimped hair. I even owned a crimping iron at that time.

About two or three years later it was all about huge-full can of hairspray-bangs! Here's a VERY embarrassing picture of me demonstrating a variant of this style:

I love Molly Ringwald's movies, too! Aside from 16 Candles, I also like Pretty in Pink. But I prefer 16 Candles since it's a romantic comedy. Who can forget The Geek and that funny exchange student, Long Duk Dong? :D "Sexy girlfriend..."

your probably right......she watched that a 1000 times too.......
Molly is here in town and was on our local radio station yesterday
and said there may be a reunion movie in the future for 16 Candles.....
I get all those movies mixed up.....which is the one John Cryer (sp)
was in?

WELL I DID NOT GROW UP IN THE 80s ..BUT ME DAUGHTER DID...
AND SHE NAMED HER LITTLE GIRL "CLAIRE" AFTER THE CHARACTER
IN ''16 CANDLES.....'' SHE MUST HAVE WATCHED THAT MOVIE
1000 TIMES. :rotfl:

I do not believe there was a character named "Claire" in 16 Candles, I believe Molly Ringwald's character was named Samantha. Could it be Molly's character "Claire Standish" from The Breakfast Club you are thinking of?

What about Strawberry Shortcake & Friends? Well, they are popular again now, but I mean the ORIGINAL...big ole poofy, floppy strawberry scented hat on the rag doll body.
My lil bro (whom Elliott reminds me entirely too much of! lol) began his video game addiction in the 80's. He got a NINTENDO & I fell in love with Mario & Luigi. That was the only game I was decent at. I played Contra with bub, but didn't like it as much as Super Mario Brothers. Man, those mushrooms that made ya giant sized were the bomb!!

Ahh, memories....

OMG, we used to go to that show ridiculously often. So often in fact, we stopped bringing the props and started new one-line responses. It's hard to explain how stupidly fun that is to someone who has never gone to Rocky Horror. Also, it is completely unwatchable without the audience--so don't ever try!! Lines from that movie still go through my head. I graduated HS in 91 and the midnight show was a great excuse to stay out late. And, of course, a trip to Dunkin' Donuts afterwards was a must!

Does anyone remember having to have hair like Farrah Fawcette??

Sk8888

Hmmm, well my recollections of the Eighties style wise is more from 1985 - 1990. Because I was only 5 years old in 1980.

I am not sure when the "Farrah look" was in. Must have been late seventies/ early eighties?

I know when I was around ten the look was things like pony-tails on one side of your head and crimped hair. I even owned a crimping iron at that time.

About two or three years later it was all about huge-full can of hairspray-bangs! Here's a VERY embarrassing picture of me demonstrating a variant of this style:

C/S....

I found this site on 80's fashion fads. It looks like feathered hair and side ponytails were "in."

My Webpage
The list isn't as complete as the growing one here though!!

Sk8888

p.s. I think your picture is adorable.

I had the Farrah Fawcett look when I was in high school. Cath's right, that was in the late 70's. The look for the 80's was the crimped hair, but I definitely loved the very high bangs, teased and styled with gel then sprayed with a whole can of AquaNet, LOL. :D The higher, the better. :P

BTW, Cath, I just love the pics that you posted here! :)

I loved that game too! Although I was a bit older when I started playing(18). My best friend's brother had that game and we used to play all the time!! I was awesome at the coin collecting and making sure that at the end of each world I jumped and ran fast at the same time so I could land at the top of the flagpole for maximum points. Ahh, memories! :)

OMG, I love Super Mario Brothers! It was my absolute favorite and, modesty aside, I was very good at it, too. :P

I also liked Galaga, Battle City, Adventure Island, Castlevania and The Legend of Kage. I would spend hours and hours playing them. Those were the days...I miss my Nintendo...:D

Okay this is embarrassing, but I still have my original nintendo game system hooked up to my T.V.! I have been addicted to the game Dr. Mario for over a decade now lol. It is really cool, it's like Tetris, only Mario (dressed up like a doctor) drops pills down and you have to sort them in rows like you do in Tetris. I have over 30 games for my Nintendo, but I rarely play most of them. I still have most of the optional accessories too, like the gun and the step pad although I never use them.

My ex-fiance and I did purchase a X-box and we played it on occasion, but I always insisted that the Nintendo stay connected too! I guess I like my games old school lol.

Did I mention I still have all my barbies and a HUGE box of lego too?

nymphadora - September 23, 2006 07:48 AM (GMT)
^ LOL, I envy you, Cath! I wish I still have my Nintendo.

BTW, I found this site that has online Nintendo games:

http://www.1980-games.com/us/old-games/nin...tendo-games.php

Of course, it's not the same as playing with your nintendo hooked up to your big tv, but I guess it's better than nothing.

My daughter has my old Nintendo system, too. It went to my son first, then her. She uses it alot. I doubt any Playstation or X-Box could hold up quite as well!!

Did anyone else have a commodor64 (or commodorVic20) or an an Atari system? My dad bought me a Commodore Vic 20 in the early 80's and I remember it being the coolest thing EVER! Not that it did much though. It came with a keyboard and it played Pong and a few other very simple games.

On my Atari I remember playing Q-Bert for hours on end. It was awesome!

nikkib703 - September 23, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
OMG, I haven't thought about Q-Bert for ages! I remember the old Coleco and Intellivision games, too. My cousin saved his allowance up and bought alot of the hand held games. I used to sneak off with them when he wasn't around. Ahh, memories....
