Title: My Little Old Dog
Description: She's sick
France - October 11, 2006 01:49 PM (GMT)
My little dog just got a very bad prognosis yesterday. I adopted her two years ago when she was about 10 yrs old, and I honestly didn't think I would have her for more than a day, as she was so sick. Well she's beaten every odd thus far and has led a very good quality of life with the proper medication and care. I'm a veterinary student, and I've tried every reasonable avenue I could to help her, but this time things are beyond my control, and all I can do is keep her happy and comfortable. She's my first dog, and she's been the best dog anyone could ask for. Please pray for her.

I feel very connected to you as my Golden Retreiver is dying of cancer now. It is heart wrenching. She is only 5.
Take care.

Thank you ElliottCat.
Dtrowbridge: I'm so very sorry to hear about your Golden.
Although your situation is very sad, it is nice to know that there are pet owners who really do love and care for their pets. I wish you and your dog well.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. I am sitting here grieveing about my dog who was PTS yesterday afternoon. I cried all day and night, but I feel better today, I have other animals but he sure was a special one. He was a large dog and lived to be 15 and a half years old, which is pretty rare. I picked him out when he was 8 weeks old and he truly was a member of my family.,
I miss him terribly and hope that he will be at Rainbow Bridge.
Sending mega vibes to you

Wow is all I can say. Our pets truly become a part of our families. Their unconditional love is so wonderful that its hard to let go. It's always the question of not doing it too soon and not doing it too late. Our 19 year-old cat died two days before Christmas. We waited, I think a little too long, but her brother came out of it and lasted another 9 months. We had a wonderful vet who came to the house. It was perfect for something so hard. She wasn't afraid at all and she acted like she was ready. Poor thing was just tired out.
Noira your dog was really old. That is unusual for a dog to live that long. We must have done something right for them to live long happy lives. The way we had to think to stop the crying was to get out old pictures of them when they were young and funny. We would laugh as their antics and some of the funny little things that made each special. When we felt overwhelmed with sadness we'd start talking about the funny things. It really helped. I recently looked at her pics a few weeks and days before she went and she looked bad. Poor little thing she just didn't want to give up. To look at the difference it what helped me to see - "it was just her time."
For us, the rhythm of the house changed. You expect movement at a certain time of day in a certain area and its not there. Nine months later when I'm to a city south of us and I'm running longer than normal I still have the sense that I need to get home to feed Shadow. It passes quickly but it shows how long it lingers. One day at a time that's all I can say.

France-
I am so sorry to hear about your dogs diagnosis and subsequent poor prognosis. However, I am so happy to know that you were able to give her a wonderful and loved 2 years. There are so many animals (as I'm sure you know) that never know love or any kind of joy.
It's always so hard to say goodbye. In July, we had to put our 17 year old Peekapoo to sleep. She was my dog since I was four, so I obviously can't remember life without her. I still feel like she should be around. But, 17 years is a VERY long life and she gave us some wonderful memories.
My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. :grouphug:
AND I wish you the best of luck in Vet school. It's an amazing career choice.

Aww... I shouldn't have come into this thread. It's making me cry :( I hate thinking about pets dying even though I know it's inevitable. *sigh*
We just have to make their time in our lives the best it can be and enjoy & cherish every moment with them.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog and everyone else who has lost a dog or any animal. I am a HUGE dog lover, am training to become a dog obedience trainer. I lost two of my beloved 15 year old shelties within the past year. They were such a big part of my life and I feel so empty and lonely without them. It's amazing the love they give us. They really are great friends and companions. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

France, your dog is very lucky to have such a loving mom. I am an animal lover as well and my heart breaks for your sadness. I read somewhere that our pets are always with us even after they pass. I believe it because I think we have an animal spirit in our home. Once in a while, after I go to bed, I feel something jump on the bed and softly walk over to me. I always look thinking it is my cat but there is nothing there. A dear friend of ours has similar experiences. She lost her dog after 17 years.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I am very sorry to hear of those who are grieving over the loss of a friend. But I am truly happy to know there are so many people who are touched by animals. My little dog is doing pretty well right now; the past few days have been pretty good ones. I'm hopeful she'll have many more to come. (I'm still praying for a miracle.) My only concern is keeping her happy and comfortable. I cannot imagine my life without her, but she's here right now, enjoying life.

Oh goodness, I didn't realize this was why you had PMed me :( I really will pray for you and Francine. If anything, I'm sure you gave her a WONDERFUL few years full of comfort and love. What more could a dog ask for? She was sick and you took her in and loved her when many others would not have.

We said goodbye to Francine on Nov. 15. It was the hardest thing I have ever been through, and each day continues to be difficult as my fiance and I adjust to life without her.
So here's to my little girl Francine who filled so many lives with joy. You will always be a beloved member of our family. And everyone at school truly misses you. I love you Miss Francy Pants, and I'll see you when my journey here has ended.

I am so sorry for your loss France. I know how hard it is. I've gone through the loss of Sweetiepie, the cat I owned for 11 yrs. It was many years ago that I lost her, but I was a mess for a couple of weeks.
It will get better in time.
